An example of sag on a vehicle's rear axle under a heavy load

Whether you're hauling heavy loads in your bed or cargo area or you're towing a trailer, you will often see the rear of your vehicle sag while the front end rises. In these cases, the rear axle is handling not only the weight of the cargo, but also more of the vehicle's weight. Because less weight is on the front axle, the front tires are making less contact with the road. Overall handling - traction, steering, and braking - is negatively affected. But the resistance from Timbren's Suspension Enhancement System works with your factory suspension to keep your vehicle level and improve your driving experience.

Diagram of the Timbren spring installed

The Timbren system comes with custom-fit brackets that are bolted onto each frame rail above the rear axle. Hollow rubber springs are bolted to the bottom of the bracket and hang down to where the bottom of the spring sits, 1" above the axle. The inch of clearance allows the existing factory suspension to operate normally under light loads and standard terrain, ensuring the smooth, comfortable ride that you are used to.

Animation of a standard Timbren rubber spring

Timbren Suspension Enhancement Systems are designed to work progressively. When the hollow rubber springs are compressed, the convoluted design causes them to quickly collapse along the folds. Once the folds are compacted, the stacked barrel shape increases resistance, stiffening the suspension and keeping your vehicle level.

Timbren suspension system works to prevent body roll

Each hollow rubber spring works independently to support the driver's side or passenger's side of your vehicle. This is helpful when you swerve or make sharp turns. Each spring is activated when it is needed, so body roll is greatly reduced. The independent action also works well when you are hauling off-center loads.

An example of a trailers swaying

Because the vehicle handles better with the springs, less turbulence will be passed along to the trailer, and this helps to keep the trailer in line. Your driving comfort is further enhanced if the trailer does begin to sway (from a gust of wind or a passing semi), because the movement from the trailer is not transferred to your vehicle. This also works to make the sway subside more quickly.

An empty truck on a bumpy road without Timbren

Another great feature of the rubber construction is that the springs absorb most of the road shock, creating a smoother, more stable ride overall. Wear and tear on the factory suspension is also lessened because the rubber springs work to prevent bottoming out on rough roads.

Timbren Suspension Enhancement Compared to the Competition

Timbren's Suspension Enhancement Systems are much easier to install than air springs - there are no air hoses to run, no compressors or gauges to hook up, and no manual adjustments to make. The rubber construction makes Timbren's springs more elastic than similar products constructed of microcellular urethane. And more elasticity allows for a more comfortable ride because the rubber has more travel.

I have attached the Timbren product to my 2012 Dodge Ram and am very impressed with the product. etrailer answered my question that I needed to know if the Timbren product would take the squat out of my truck when I hook up my 5th wheel rv. The proof is in the attached pictures I took to share with you and potential customers. Your customer service & product knowledge is outstanding and that is why I am a faithful customer. As far as the installation of the product, I could not find an easier thing to do....It's harder to change a light bulb! Of course your installation video was very informative which made things a lot easier.

Helped make my decision a no brainer....thanks for the pics they sealed the deal.

Ron L.

5/10/2014

Fantastic....The truck drives like a dream! If and when I hit any potholes or bumps, of course you still feel them, but the control is there with no fish tailing. As far as pulling my 5th wheel, it feels like everything is one unit and floats right along!

Mike L.

12/28/2014

thanks Ron. Great information and you helped me with my decision.

John T.

5/9/2015

Very good illustration and explanation. I have a 5th wheel and am experiencing the squat problem. Question: Is the installation strictly a friction fit or do I have to install a bolt with nut?

Tony O.

5/27/2015

For John T. They are a friction fit, installed mine in less than 15 min. Slight harder ride when unloaded, but they work perfectly for carrying the load of the trailer. Highly recommend.

I was a sagging mess intil I had the Timbren Rear Suspension added. Now my back end stands tall to the hitch weight of our trailer. These little things really make a big difference.

Dodge Ram Pickup

Needed to level out the ride when towing an RV with my Ram 1500. The Timbren enhancement system worked perfectly to keep the Ram at an even height front to back rather than the rear pushed down and the nose up when the RV was attached. Also keeping the RV level improved towing handling.

After 1 year I can report back that this system has continued to provide the needed improvement to the suspension. I am not seeing the materials deteriorate or break down in any way.

2017 Ram1500

Actually got these for insurance. I put a full air suspension under my Ram to get a little raised stance. My only fear of that would be an air line failure. If that were to ever happen, these would only allow less than 2" of drop instead of about 5. Love my setup.

by:
2017 Ram1500

Purchased to help my suspension when pulling around my 2 horse BP trailer. Tested them out the day I installed them with a 16' dump trailer (which is too much trailer for my 1/2 ton). Took a 20 mile ride on the highway and some in rough shape back county roads (to test the ride and to make sure I seated the Timbren in securely). I am super impressed. They preformed as advertised and my truck sits level. The ride is much better with the load and I love how it doesn't affect my ride when not loaded.

I change my own oil and headlights but that is about as far as my mechanic skills go. They were super easy to install. It took me more time to take the tire on and off than to remove and install these. I watched an installation video, used two small blocks of wood to seat them, probably 30 minutes of my time. Would definitely recommend this product.

Have used these before on a previous vehicle. E Trailer has the best price and the install videos are also helpful

2013 Dodge Ram Pickup

These "enhanced" bump-stops have definitely improved the ride quality of my 2013 Ram 1500 quad cab when pulling our 7500 lb. 29 foot travel trailer. The trailer probably has 500+ pounds of food, clothes, kids toys, etc inside as well. The truck bed probably has another 800'ish pounds of equipment in it that compresses the suspension before I even hook the trailer up. With the stock stops the rear suspension hardly moved. After adding the new stops, the rear suspension had travel again and the steering felt less twitchy.

Unloaded truck will hit the new stops only if I hit a pretty harsh bump but it's only noticeable if you're paying attention to it. With a loaded bed (no trailer) hitting the stops is more noticeable but you still need to hit a decent bump for them to touch.

They are very easy to install. Take the time to read the instructions and watch the installation video before you pay someone $50-$75 for a 15-20 minute job.

I would buy them again.

John

The bump-stops have been excellent. Absolutely worth the money.

I put these on my 14' Ram 1500 that has Mopar 2.5'' lift system. It took me longer to crawl under the truck than it did to pull off stock bump stops and install the rubber shocks. A little bit of soapy water and they slid right on. No need to jack up truck or use of any tools. Pulled 16' bumper pull stock trailer loaded down the same day and was very pleased with the elimination of bounce from the rear. Rams have coils in the rear that make the truck drive like a dream empty, but bouncy as heck pulling a trailer. I recommend this product to anyone with a Ram. Boots sit about 1.5'' above axel so still get same smooth ride when empty and support when you put on a load.

Still holding strong on my 1500. I have enjoyed the system so much I will be ordering one for my 2017 Ram 2500

Great ...love the timbren bump stops...would recommend them to everyone towing with a 1500

by:

Great on a smooth road

by:

The fork lift operator couldn't reach far enough to center them over my axle, but it didn't matter, because I installed air lift air springs and the Timbren bump stop spring enhancements. I can't believe how well they performed together. It was only a short trip with this load, and I'd never haul this heavy of a payload in a 1500 unless it was a short trip, but it wouldn't have been an option without these enhancements. The fork lift driver was even impressed. He asked me what I was using. These products kick serious ass! AMAZING!

I’m posting review of how the installation went. The installation is so easy, all you need is a jack and 2 short 2x4 boards(for compressing the Timbrens evenly into the socket). I have a 2011 Dodge Ram 4.7l. Pictures below shows my original where rotted and crumbled as soon as I touched them. My truck without from the ground to top of rear fender sits at 38 inches, after my trailer load out on it goes down to just a tad below 37 inches. Major difference, before it would go beyond 35 inches or below.
Pictures #1 show the original yellow rotted ones
Picture #2 is the tinbren installed.

by:

It did exactly what I needed to do. I had really bad chassis roll and soft suspension in the rear of my truck. This eliminated the issue and gave me a stronger ride in the rear.

I have been carrying an 80 gallon fuel tank tools and equipment with my pick up. Constant weight on the bump stops. There is some wear between the components of the bump stop but they are still solid.

by:

Don’t have a good enough idea of if the product will be sufficient for my needs. I’m pulling a 25ft gooseneck trailer to haul my tractor. I’m doing this with a Ram half ton truck and I couldn’t mount airbags as the hitch interferes with there mounting. These were an alternative and I know they are helping but won’t know how much until I do more pulling.

2013 Suzuki Swift

Purchased these after researching and reading reviews about how these helped others with the same problem I had. They came quickly and were very easy to install. Took less than 30 minutes. The rear end of our 2013 Dodge would sink when we hooked up our Ultra Light trailer. It has a 2" lift on the front. After installing the Timbren Rear Suspension Enhancement System things seemed to level out and we will see how much better it rides this weekend! Customer service was great. Contact about shipping and receiving was swift and easy. Thanks. Pictures attached show the spacing on the rear tire/wheel well before and after. Sturdy strong product. Thank you.

2016 Dodge Ram Pickup

To say I'm very happy with this product is an understatement. First off, shipping was fast and the communication from George was top notch. Secondly, installation was as easy as it gets. Find a safe, flat area to jack your truck up by the frame (this creates space between the factory bump stops and the axle) then remove the factory bump stops. You may need a flat head screw driver for this to pry the old bumps stops out (easy)...
insert the new Timbren Suspension System...a 6 inch long 2x4 would be helpful here....safely place the 2x4 atop the axle directly under the Timbren system, then slowly lower the vehicle. The weight of the vehicle will force the Timbren system up into the receiving end and this should complete the install.
It took me longer to dig out my floor jack, cut a small piece of 2x4, then installing the Timbren system.
Lastly, I immediately hooked up my camper a 24' (27' all in) Forest River and instantly saw my 2016 RAM leveled out. I have a 3 hr trip planned in the coming weeks and will offer some feedback on the ride with this new Timbren system in place. Pretty impressed thus far

2011 Dodge Ram Pickup

A heavy workload on a Ram 1500 will cause the truck to squat with just 1 inch of clearance in the wheel-well. The stock suspension is soft and it feels precarious when under load.

I would not say that Ram dropped the ball on their suspension since many of their 1500 customers do not load the truck down to use it to its rated capacity and the soft ride appeals to a large segment of drivers who cannot find it in other trucks. However, it seems that the Timbren bump stops are what should be on the truck if you are not getting a 2500 or 3500 but need to tow and haul.

The Timbren rear enhancement system immediately improves the handling on the Ram 1500 and stands up even when placing it under load. It is almost like buying a whole new truck. I cannot compliment this product enough and I am extremely pleased with how the truck handles both loaded and unloaded. It is not too stiff and it does not feel bumpy like other enhancements might. But it feels sturdy and the truck feels stronger almost right away.

I could have gone with a different distributor for these parts but etrailer.com is more than just a distributor. You can find official etrailer.com videos on most of their products which will give you honest information on their products and explain how to install and use those products. If you have a question, you will get a reply from them with an expert on the subject. They are interested in finding you solutions first and the sales are just a byproduct from their expertise. I did not find these parts cheaper anywhere else, but I still would have gone with etrailer.com even if they cost a little more. I chose etrailer.com because I know I can trust them to get me the good stuff.

I have installed the Timbren SES on my 2012 Ram 1500. Total time including removal of OEM bumpers was 45 minutes. I added a preliminary step to the installation procedures. I cleaned the receptacle where the OEM bumper was located to remove the dirt and residue. That made the new parts slide into position easily. I used a small wood block as suggested to ensure complete seating of the new bumpers. They fit perfectly. I have approximately 1.25" of clearance between the bumpers and the rest. Can't wait to get my trailer hooked up to see how they perform.
Excellent service as always from etrailer!

2019 Ram Rebel 4 x 4 Quad Cab
Ordering
was easy and shipment was fast. Although it was a little concerning when I first saw the box. It appeared that baggage handlers at the airport had their hands on it, however the contents were fine. Installation was fast, I used a floor jack and 4x4 under the trailer hitch to lift the truck 3 to 4 inches. It was scary how easy the original bump stops came out. One twist and they were removed. Installation was uneventful (per instructions) there is a decent amount of space under the Rebel which certainly helped. On flat roads I haven't notice any change in ride quality but it is certainly stiffer when going over bumps. I purchased these for aiding in the towing a travel trailer but have not yet used in that capacity.
4 Stars for now and if they work as designed with towing the trailer would give 5 Stars.

by:

They are great for controlling squat from towing. The ride is much better when towing. However, the ride is NOT better when empty. Hit a big bump empty and the back end bounces hard. Still worth it overall since I need the towing support

by:

Have had great success with these. Have loaded the truck bed down with sod and landscaping blocks and everything has handled well. Would put these on again on another truck.

2013 Dodge Ram Pickup

Timbren Pads are easy to install but could use a stop line to verify seating, kinda of a guess. Ram 2013 pads don't bolt on they are press fit to frame. The old pads came out very easy and were dried out from weather? No physical changes in height to PU after installation. Clearance went from 3 (original), to 1 1/2. Pulling a 33 ft trailer and wind rocking PU, also have Sumo spring to install later. I pulled bump pad off without jacking up then jacked frame up, installed pads then set PU down several times with 2 x 4 spacer to set pad. Can't wait to try on road with trailer.
Etrailer shipped very quickly, ordered Tuesday afternoon delivered Saturday. Shipped no rush by me.

2019 Ram1500

So far all I can review is the install and super easy I put a floor jack under one side of the frame jacked it up took hardly any effort to pull the original stops out put a little soap and water on it screwed it up in there put a 2 x 4 beneath it drop the suspension down onto the two by four jumped up and down on the rear bumper to make sure it was seated nice and easy to do both sides took me about five minutes of actual work no problem I can't wait to try it out towing these are much higher quality and much larger than the original bump stops I can't believe the factory actually put those in it must be for grocery getters. we plan on using these for planar travel trailer to avoid the bucking bronco effect we have a 2019 Ram 1500 lariat 4 x 4 crew cab with a six-foot-four box

2018 Dodge Ram Pickup

These timbrens are a much better product than I ever dreamed. I had air bags on previous trucks. These work great. Very little cost and installed in 15 minutes on my 2018 Ram. I watched a video and cut 2 blocks in that time too. I tow a job trailer and this truck had more sag from hitch weight than last truck. Rear coil springs.
Solved that issue.
I'd get them again for sure.

  • Troubleshooting Soft and Unstable Rear End on 2011 Dodge Ram 1500 Towing 27 ft Trailer
If the rear end of your 2011 Dodge Ram 1500 feels soft and unstable when towing your trailer with the Equalizer weight distribution system, then it sounds like you might have the spring bars too tight. If the weight distribution system is too tight, then more weight will be distributed to the front vehicle axle and the trailer axles essentially trying to lift the rear end of your truck. The spring bars should be level with the trailer frame or angled slightly downward. Over or under adjusting...

The Timbren kit part # TDR1500DQ that you referenced is a confirmed fit for your 2017 Ram 1500 and would be a great option to give you additional suspension support when you are carrying a lot of weight. I'm not sure how tall the factory bump stops are on your Ram, but I can tell you the Timbren springs have an overall height of 5-1/2" (see attached image). Ideally you will maintain 1 to 1-1/2" of clearance between the spring and contact point after installation. I...

  • What is the Difference between Timbrens and SumoSprings for My 2022 Ram 1500 4x4?
If you are considering Timbrens like the # TDR1500DQ and the SumoSprings like the # SSR-307-47 for your 2022 Ram 1500 4x4, I recommend the SumoSprings # SSR-307-47. The SumoSprings will offer the same quality as the Timbrens in terms of suspension support, but won't give you quite as harsh a ride. The spring should not contact the axle unless...

  • Suspension Enhancement Recommendation for 2016 Ram 1500 with 4 inch Lift
The Timbren kit part # TDR1500DQ is the correct kit for your 2016 Ram 1500 as long as you don't have the air suspension. For 1 inch spacers you would want the part # A25723-90AH00. You would need 4 of these for each side of your truck. You would need to source a bolt for the kit that is 4 inches longer than what comes with the Timbren locally. This setup will greatly help with the sag your suspension has when the quads are loaded plus won't require to inflate any air bags.
