Peterson M143A 2-1/2 Inch Clearance Marker Light w/ Reflex Dimensions

Sealed, Waterproof Trailer Light

The waterproof construction of this light makes it ideal for use on trailers that may be submerged, like a boat trailer. The circuit board is sealed, which means that water will not damage the diodes or circuit board.

P2-Rated Lights

Diagram of light spread for P2 rated light

A P2-rated light produces a 45-degree angle of light to either side of its centerline for a total of 90 degrees of coverage. This beam pattern can be seen straight on, but it cannot be seen clearly from the side. So this type of light can be used as either a side marker light or a clearance light, but it cannot function as both. If you need both functions, then you must install 2 separate lights on your trailer - one as a front or rear clearance light and one as a side marker light.

Recessed-Mount Light

Recessed Grommet Mount Trailer Light Installation Diagram

Recessed-mount trailer lights install with a grommet, which is often sold separately. These lights extend past the trailer surface and require a hole for installation. If replacing a light, you can utilize the pre-existing hole. If installing a new light, you will need to cut a hole or use a mounting bracket (sold separately) to complete the installation.

Video Transcript for Review of Peterson Trailer Lights - Clearance Lights - M143A

Today we're going to take a look at the Peterson trailer clearance or side marker light. In addition to being a light itself it also has a reflector, as you can see there, to have visibility even when we're not using our trailer and we don't have our lights on. It'll stay be visible even at night when the light shines on it.This is going to be a submersible light. It is an incandescent, so you might be able to see the bulb there from the side. It's just a single bulb design, and at the back we'll have our two prongs that we can connect to our wiring and get hooked up.With our plug in place, that'll give us our lighting functions. Our light function.

Turn the studio lights out so you can see just how bright that is, even in low-light. So not blindingly bright, just enough to make us visible at night. And this light is going to be P2 rated, so basically that means that from the front, we'll be able to see it until about a 45 degree angle. And then the light starts getting dimmer as far as visibility. So if you want this to be a side marker and a clearance light, you'll need to have two. One on either corner of your trailer. The wiring prongs are sold separately.

You can find those here at etrailer.com. This one from Peterson is going to be part number B431-49. And you can also get a grommet that's a recessed mount, which will look like this. And this part number's going to be 142-18. That just is going to add a little bit of extra shock absorption for our light.

It kind of cleans up the look. We'll still have plenty of room for our wires to come through. But overall just sort of completes the look of our housing.Again, this is sold separately. You can find it here at etrailer.com. Now with the grommet in place, our light will be about three and three quarter inches wide.

But the light on its own will be just two and a half inches in diameter once I get it peeled out of here.So you can see there, two and a half inches in diameter. And then seven eighths of an inch deep. That's going from the inaudible 00:02:48 of the light to the back where those terminals stick out.Again, it is an incandescent bulb. This is going to be all DOT compliant, P2 rated, and it's made in the USA.And that's going to do it for our look at the Peterson trailer clearance marker light.

See what our Experts say about this Peterson Trailer Lights

  • Installing Round 2-1/2 Inch Peterson Light and Grommet
Without seeing what the issue is it's extremely difficult to say what the problem may be. But the way it should go is you first insert the PVC Grommet # 142-18, and then push in the Peterson Clearance or Side Marker Trailer Light # M143A. You can actually see this in action at about the 2:20 mark or so of the video I linked for you. It is possible you may need to enlarge the hole ever so slightly if the problem is it isn't quite large enough for the grommet and light.
