Comparing Trailer Hub and Drum Assembly # 8-173-16UC3 with # 8-276-5
Question:
Even though both the 8-173-16UC3 and 8-276-5 7 inch drums indicate they can be used with the 23-47 and 23-48 electric brake assemblies, the 8-276-5 drums indicate they can be used with 1-3/4 brake shoes, while the 8-173-16UC3 drums say only 1-1/4 shoes. Why the difference? Is one drum number preferable over the other for electric brakes? I am adding electric brakes to a utility trailer with a 2000# axle, and I want to get it right, and least expensive, the first time. Thank you for your help.

Basically, an electric brake assembly is going to be a 7 x 1-1/4 inch while a hydraulic brake assembly will be a 7 x 1-3/4 inch. If you are using electric brakes on the trailer, go with Trailer Hub and Drum Assembly, # 8-173-16UC3.
For hydraulic drum brakes, use Trailer Hub and Drum Assembly, # 8-276-5.
