Draw-Tite Tested Tough

Draw-Tite Tested Tough

Draw-Tite's Tested Tough program provides testing standards far superior to those outlined by the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE), the go-to source for engineering professionals.

Each Draw-Tite trailer hitch receiver undergoes extensive fatigue testing and static testing with the ball mount that is either supplied or recommended for use with that particular hitch, thus ensuring results that are applicable to real life use. Fatigue testing is also conducted on hitches rated for use with weight-distribution systems.

In addition, Draw-Tite performs static testing on a simulated automobile, as opposed to the rigid fixture used for SAE testing, resulting in a more true-to-life scenario.

Video Transcript for Trailer Hitch Installation - 2018 Kia Sportage - Draw-Tite

Speaker 1: Today on our 2018 Kia Sportage, we're going to be taking a look at and showing you how to install the Draw-Tite Class III Custom Fit Trailer Hitch Receiver, part number 76074. So, here's what our hitch is going to look like once we have it installed. The cross tube's going to hide behind the buffer nicely and all we're going to see is the receiver tube sticking out. Now, it is a Class II hitch, which means it's going to give us that 2" by 2" receiver tube opening. And as you can see, it has a nice reinforced collar, just adding to that finished look. Now, the way we're mount any of our accessories is going to be with this hole towards the front, going to accept a standard 5/8" pin and clip. They're not included, but you can pick one up on our website, using part number PC3.

Now, the secondary hole here is going to be for a J-pin stabilization device. And that's going to be great for any accessories that don't have a built in anti-rattle. Now, the way that's going to work is, is you're going to have a J-pin like this and it's going to go through your hitch pin hole. And then the other area is going to come in and apply pressure to your accessory through that secondary hole. And you're going to have a knot that's going to thread on, that's going to pull that accessory to the side, keeping it from rattling around.

And it's also a locking device to keep all your accessories secure. Now, you can also pick up one of these on our website. A nice added feature of our Draw-Tite hitch is it's going to have this bracket right here just to the left of our receiver tube opening and that's going to be for any electrical connector that we would like to mount. That way whenever we're ready to tow, our electrical will be right here for us. Now, as far as the safety chain connection points go, we're going to have a couple of plates that are welded on the side of our receiver tube and they're going to drop down just right below. Now, it's going to give up plenty of room to hook most sized hooks on and off.

And since they're below our receiver tube, we're not going to have to worry about any kind of interference with either the J-pin, a standard pin and clip or even a locking device. Now, as far as weight is concerned, our hitch is going to have a 675 pound tongue weight, along with a 4,500 pound gross trailer weight rating. Now, it is designed to work with weight distribution systems as well. And those weights are going to stay the same. However, I do want to mention and recommend that you double check your Kia's Owner's Manual to make sure that you don't ever exceed the manufacturer's recommended weight. Like to give you a few measurements that'll help you when decided for accessories for your new hitch, such as a ball mount, bike rack or even a cargo carrier.

From the center of the hitch pin hole to the outer most edge of the bumper it's going to be right about 5". Now, from the ground to the inside top edge of the receiver tube opening, that's going to be right about 13".Now that we've seen what our hitch looks like and gone over some of the features, let's show you how to get it installed. To being our installation, we're going to need to come to the back of our vehicle and right by the exhaust, we're going to have this plastic panel on the outside. Now, there's going to be a one on each side and we're going to need to remove it. Now, in order to remove it, we're going to have two pushpin fasteners along the edge here. We'll take a flathead screwdriver as we come right to the center section, there's a little indentation. We're going to come and pop that center section out and then come behind the outer section and we can pull the rest of the clip out. Now, we move forward right behind the rear wheel. We're going to have another pushpin fastener we're going to need to remove. So, we're going to want to pull the wheel liner back just a bit so we can get a hold of that plastic cover. And if you look up, we're going to have these white plastic clips that are holding it in place on those studs. Now, those are just kind of press fit in there, so you're going to want to give it a good tug to pull the panel down and those clips may come out of the cover, but that's alright. And since it did come out of the cover, you're just going to want to unthread it off the stud and then we can just press it back into the cover. And if you're having a little bit of trouble getting it back in, just go ahead and grab you a set of pliers and press it until it pops back into place. We're going to need to lower our exhaust. So I'm going to take a strap to help support it. I'm just going to want to find a solid point to hook it to. That way when we do lower it, it's not going to come down too far and cause any damage. If we come to our muffler, we're going to find the rubber isolator and hangers. I'm just going to take a little bit a spray lubricant and spray them down. That's going to make it a little bit easier to slide those off. Now we're going to have one on each side, right behind the tail pipe. And we'll do that for the other one as well. You're going to loosen your strap a bit, just so that you have a little bit more room. As you can see, over here on the passenger's side, we really don't have a whole lot of room. The driver's side, we got plenty of room to get the hitch in place. But on the passenger's side, it's not a whole lot. And to prevent it from scratching our Sportage, we're going move further up towards the front of the car and find the next hanger and remove that one as well. So it's going to be in front of the muffler, just right by the axle. So again, we can just spray those down and come back with our pry bar and slide them off.Now we have plenty of room to work with and get our hitch in without having to worry about scratching this panel over here. So if we come to our passenger's side frame rail, we're going to notice that we're going to have two holes that are threaded on the outside of our frame as well as two on the bottom. These four spots are going to be our mounting location. I'm taking a little bit a spray lubricant, spray it inside the thread hole. Take my nylon brush and clean it out. That's going to get all the rust and debris, if there is any, cleaned out. And we'll repeat that for the other three remaining holes on our passenger's side here. However, on the driver's side, we're only going to be using the two side holes as well as the forward thread hole on the bottom. So we'll clean those out as well. Now before we put our hitch up, I'd like to go over the combination of hardware, so it's a little bit easier to see. We're some M10 bolts and some conical tooth washers and you're going to want to make sure that the teeth on the washer are facing away from the head of the bolt or towards the hitch. And we're going to go through our hitch and thread it into the frame. And that's how we're going to be attaching our hitch to the car. Now, with an extra set of hands, we're going to lift our hitch into position. We're going to line up the holes and the frames with the holes in our hitch and you get at least one bolt on each side started, that way the hitch'll support itself. And once the hitch is supported, we can work on getting the rest of the hardware in place.I'm going to come back and with a 16mm socket, I'm going to snug up all our hardware. I'm going to repeat that on the other side as well. With that same 16mm socket, I'm going to come back and torque all my hardware down. And we're going to find that specification in our instructions. We're going to repeat that for all of our remaining hardware. With the secure, we can go ahead and put our exhaust back in position. Just going to lift it up and put that rubber isolator back on the hanger. And we're going to move to the muffler and do the same thing for the other two. Now, we're going to remove the strap. And to get this panel on, you're just going to want to line everything back up, kind of get it loosely into position. You might have to pull the wheel well liner back a little bit, kind of work it into place. And you're just going to want to push up and those clips'll reengage and we're going to reinstall those pushpin fasteners. Now, these, you're going to want to leave that center section kind of pushed out, push in the outer and then lock it down by pushing that center section in. We're going to repeat that for the other panel as well. And that'll finish up our look at the Draw-Tite Class III Custom Fit Trailer Hitch Receiver, part number 76074 on our 2018 Kia Sportage.

Fit was excellent. Very secure for my Curt 2 bike platform rack. The included install kit is very well prepared and the instructions are clear.

My only possible negative (your mileage may vary):
A result of the higher tongue weight rating compared to KIA/Hyundai OEM and competing brands is that the main tubes are larger in size so occasional contact with the muffler may occur. The body mounted exhaust hangers can be bent/adjusted to alleviate this. The vehicle's exhaust hangers may vary a small amount in position from vehicle to vehicle from the factory so yours may not have this issue. A quick adjustment on the hanger position and in 15 or less minutes you are done. This is occasionally an issue and can happen with any brand and type of vehicle when installing a hitch.

You can also fix it by purchasing a shorter or longer exhaust rubber isolator. Also, if your exhaust hanger is bolted to the frame some people are able to unbolt it flip the other way and bolt it back. I have attached a help article that addresses this issue.

For a 1 year update to my hitch purchase. My hitch was performing wonderfully. Very stable and secure for my heavy bike and rack. My 2018 Kia Sportage was totaled in an accident, and the hitch was lost. I replaced the 2018 with a 2020 Sportage and the first thing I bought was a new Drawtite 76074 hitch.

This hitch was easy to install. Fit perfectly and the instructions were super easy to follow. Very high quality product and hardware. Would recommend
this brand to anybody looking to install a hitch on their vehicle.

Great hitch for a good price. The safety chain loops are a bit excessive and increase the the overall bulk of the hitch size. Use the etrailer.com installation video to familiarize yourself with the installation steps for your vehicle and its easy...The hitch was installed in about 20 minutes, plus about 10 minutes to heat up and modify the drivers side undercarriage cover trim because the tube section extends trough the mounting plate too far. Other than that its a great hitch, particularly if you want to carry a bike rack without using a support strap (required on the Curt hitch)

I purchased this along with Swagman XC 2-Bike Rack Platform Style for 1-1/4" and 2" Trailer Hitches Item # S64650. They both arrived promptly after ordering even with COVID-19 restrictions ongoing throughout the country. The installation videos were very useful as they showed just how easy install actually is. I did the install myself in my home garage with the assistance of my wife just to start the bolts while I held the hitch in place. One mistake I made was that I knew I would need a torque wrench as I mentioned I watched the videos, yet when everything arrived I still had yet to purchase one so I was forced to run to Harbor Freight for a $20 Pittsburg.
If I would have pre-planned and had the torque wrench in advance, install would have only taken about 30 minutes, but it ended up taking me about an hour due to my store visit. I can't speak to how it works for actual towing but it holds 2 Electra beach cruisers and the aforementioned bike rack perfectly.

I ordered this for my SUV so I could hookup a trailer. Shipping was fast and I received in 4 days. I am not a mechanic by any means, with that being said, bought some car ramps and installed the hitch receiver (Draw-Tite Max-Frame Trailer Hitch Receiver - Custom Fit - Class III - 2" - 76074). I also installed the wiring (T-One Vehicle Wiring Harness with 4-Pole Flat Trailer Connector - 118698). Took about 4.5 hours but overall look the look and feel. Everything went together great. I watch the video beforehand. I would highly recommend these products.

I recently bought a 2019 Kia Sportage and needed a trailer hitch for my mountain bicycle carrier. I visited a lot of web sites and did my research and read a lot of reviews before discovering etrailer.com. After looking at their products and watching the installation video for my Kia Sportage I was 95% convinced I had found the hitch that would suit my needs. My next concern was the shipping costs due to weight considerations. I was very much surprised they offered FREE shipping and that was my deciding factor. To my amazement the hitch arrived 2 days ahead of schedule and had all the mounting hardware and detailed instructions on how to install my new hitch. The mounting of the hitch went without any problems and the hitch fit with no issues what so ever. I was able to mount my new hitch in just over 45 minutes by myself and could nor be more pleases at how nice my new hitch looks on my vehicle. I have already recommended etrailer.com two 2 of my riding buddies and they have purchased hitches for their vehicles. I would not hesitate to tell anyone looking for a quality hitch to check etrailer.com first and look no further. For a quality product, excellent price and FREE shipping, you can’t go wrong with etrailer.com. Best of all they are an American made product which I always try to buy from.

2020 Kia Sportage

Got this for my new 2020 Sportage finally. It fits well and looks good, I am lucky to have a friend that works for Kia so he installed for me, He didn't have to cut any plastic panels etc. I did not get light wiring as this is for my bikes so not needed, but I do warn everyone with a Sportage to make sure to check your warranty. Kia will void it with aftermarket light kits. Etrailer, thank you again for a great product!

-Received my hitch receiver VERY quickly after ordering. I utilized the free shipping option.
-Packaging was adequate so no unwanted scratching to the receiver paint.
-Installation on my 2019 Kia Sportage was a breeze. Did it alone without a hitch jack (Though that was probably a fun sight for the neighbors). Job took about 30 minutes, because I also did not have a exhaust rubber hanger removal tool.
-Screws and Instructions were enclosed in a bag inside the hitch slot.
-Quality of the receiver seems very good (very heavy quality material, solid welds, nice paint job). Bolt holes fit my vehicle PERFECTLY. I was able to hand tighten them before torqueing during install.
-I will 100% be ordering from etrailer again.

by:

I am super impressed. I ordered this hitch and wiring harness Monday night late and received it today already! It was super easy to install. Took about 2 hours total to get installed including the wiring harness.

The only downside was that the pieces of tubing that extended past the weld on both ends was about 1 1/2 - 2 inches too long to fit in place. They were hitting the side panels, so I had to use a grinder to cut off the excess and it fit great!

The wiring harness was simple to install and the direct plug adapters made it easy.

Speedy service and a really good product
I have purchased multiple equipment by draw Tite and it always exceeds my expectations
FYI THE HITCH FITS 2022 Kia Sportage perfectly with no modifications

Both the hitch and wiring harness were both so easy and quick to install. Great product and customer service!

2017 Kia Sportage

The paperwork said 25 minutes for installation, and they weren't kidding! All went swimmingly. Backed the Kia up onto my oil-change blocks. Lots of room to work. Cowling fasteners removed easily. Muffler hangers - same. Supported the passenger end of the hitch on the exhaust pipe. Held it in place with my knee & started on the driver-side installation bolts. Everything lined up. No need to chase thread. All bolts fit properly & torqued right up. The cowlings reinstalled without a hitch. Was done inside of a half-hour. But to make that happen - I cut the ends of the main support tubes on the hitch, where they protrude through the mounting plates. Cut them to be parallel with the plates & still protrude about an inch. Relieved the sharp edges & painted the cuts with two coats of a weather-resistent paint. So..., no interference with body panels, as I'd seen in a couple of customer reviews. If you add THAT time to the actual installation time - then the entire installation was neighborhood of an hour. STILL pretty dang good!!

So far so good. Not pulling anything. Its for my hitch-mount bike rack. The receiver tube was welded a couple degrees off-square. Spacers at the mounts on one side corrected much of the issue - but still not square, so the rack still leans off to one side a bit. Not a concern - and as much an issue with the rack as the hitch. The hitch itself is a solid unit. Absolutely trustworthy.

by:
2017 Kia Sportage

On line installation video was great. Only item that was a little unclear on the 2017 Sportage was the need to PULL the two bottom quarter panel inserts from the top two screws after removing the 4 clips on each side. The hitch is well made and a perfect fit!

by:
2020 Kia Sportage

They don't know how to pack it, it doesn't have protection so when the mail mistreats it, it protects itself, the package arrived beaten and scratched... really, if they don't change the way they pack their products so that they are protected, it's not good to buy from them... after the evil while that with a credit of $xx when the shipping cost me $xxx [to puerto rico].

by:

Fits perfect good instructions from the vedio. It took me about a hour with little mechanic tools. All you need is a impact drill 16 millimeter socket short extension and the rest is easy.

by:
2020 Kia Sportage

I was disappointed that the hitch had several places where the paint had chipped off. You shipped it loose in a cardboard box with no protection or padding, and I could see where edges of the hitch were protruding through the box, I’m sure from rough handling. It should be packaged better.

I am sorry to hear that the hitch arrived in this manner. I will have our Customer Service team reach out to you. I recommend touching the hitch up with a rust resistant paint such as Rustoluem if you have not done so already.

I decided on the Draw-Tite hitch Item#76074 for the 2" receiver and after watching the helpful video on the website. The hitch will allow me to pull my motorcycle trailer. My vehicle is a 2018 Sportage Ex, which has the single tailpipe on the right side. The reason I mention this, by starting the installation on the right, I didn't have to drop the exhaust system. Seven bolts later, the hitch was in place - great fit.

Helpful customer service and quick delivery (4 days).

Draw-Tite Item 76074: A year later, no rattle, no issues- great choice.

by:

This tow bar looks great and is solid. Installing is quick and easy - just have an extra pair of hands handy to get the bar into place and the first bolt started.
I marked this down a star for two reasons:
1) The bar has a slot for mounting the Flat wiring connector. Unfortunately, you NEED a mounting bracket which is not included with the tow bar nor the wiring kit. If you are buying this combination, it should be included! Now, I have to find a mounting bracket or purchase one through etrailer, wait a week to get it, AND pay shipping!;
2) The bar came with several places where the paint had been chipped off in shipping. A few extra pieces of cardboard placed strategically inside the box would prevent this from happening and would save you having to touch up the areas to prevent rusting.

The mounting bracket for the 4-way trailer connector is not included with either the trailer hitch or the wiring harness. It is available separately as part # 18144.

by:

It is built strong, we had to do a little modeling to my underneath weather cover, but I love it.

by:

Hitch fit perfect, install was under an hour by myself, would be easier with help, delivery was super fast, I plan on using this for a bike rack only, so I'm sure it will do the trick.
Highly recommend this product and etrailer

Fantastic, absolutely perfect !!!!!!

by:

7 bolts and installed. 25 min job. Panel removal little short on explanation, but you will see that ends of hitch interfere with trim, that is what needs to be removed. If company had rounded the ends a 1/4" each end, would not needed to remove anything, and would not have compromised integrity of hitch

excellent

by:

Hitch has been great. Only one problem, it doesn’t exactly fit perfectly. There’s not enough space between hitch and muffler. So there for the muffler hits the hitch and makes a rattling nose.

This is a common problem that just needs a little tweaking to be fixed. You can either twist the hanger bracket up, pulling the muffler away from the hitch or two, take the issue to a muffler shop so they can relocate the muffler isolator.

  • Which Trailer Hitch Recommended for 2021 Kia Sportage
Because it has a slightly higher tongue weight capacity than the Curt # C13281, I'd recommend going with the Draw-Tite Class III hitch, part # 76074. The Draw-Tite hitch has a 675 lb tongue weight capacity which makes it the perfect choice for carrying a bike rack or other hitch mounted accessory like a # C18151 cargo carrier. For a trailer wiring harness, I'd recommend the # 118698 trailer wiring harness, a ball mount like part # 2753 and for a trailer ball, use # 19261 for a 1-7/8 inch...
