Video Transcript for Blue Ox Adjustable Ball Mount with Pintle Hook Review

Hi everyone, Aidan here at etrailer. Today, we're gonna be taking a look at this Blue Ox Adjustable Ball Mount with the pintle hook attachment for your two inch hitches. So I will point out that we are using this in a 2 1/2 inch hitch with a reducer, but on a regular two inch hitch, this is gonna be a great adjustable ball mount, offering you a 2 5/16 ball with that pintle hook attachment that you can or don't have to use. So if you've got a lunette ring trailer, this is really nice, because you can pull out that pin and clip, lift the lever to open it up, drop your lunette ring trailer on top, push it back into place and resecure it with that pin and clip. If you don't need to use the pintle hook, maybe you're towing just a regular trailer, you can secure it up top in the open position with that pin and clip. And then it won't pop back down, you can hook up to a regular coupler, so if you're carrying a wide variety of different trailers and you need to be switching between those two mounting options, you can.

Whatever configuration you plan on using it in, it's gonna have a 13,000 pound gross towing weight rating. That's gonna be how much you can pull, and then for the max tongue weight, that's gonna be 1,000 pounds. So just keep that in mind when you're hooking up to your trailers and towing with them. The height adjustment is done through these pins and clips in the side. That can bring this to the full drop position where it's in right now, that's an 8 3/4 inch drop, or slide all the way up to a 2 5/8 inch rise, resecure it with those pins and clips, hook up to your trailer, and you're good to go.

All the holes in between are on one inch increments, so whenever you are adjusting, that's the kind of adjustability you're working with. You'll notice with it removed, in the back here, we've got this rubber stopper and three holes to adjust it to. It's gonna act like a sort of anti-rattle device. It's not perfect, because it's not gonna completely immobilize the ball and pintle hook, but it will help reduce that metal on metal contact and quiet things up a bit. You can move it between these three holes to adjust for wherever we hook up our ball, just know that if you've got it in the very top position with that max rise, there's not really a spot for it there, so you won't be able to have it making contact with the ball there.

It's a little tricky to get in, but that does mean it's got a snug fit. Once it is in, it's not gonna come back out very easily, and it'll make contact with the back of the ball and the pintle hook. And here's kind of what I mean of that it's not gonna perfectly immobilize the ball. There's still a lot of movement in those pin holes where metal's gonna be hitting metal, and it's just gonna be making a good amount of noise. If you are using it in a context like we are with a hitch reducer, I'd look at the 2 1/2 inch hitch version of this.

That one's going to have an actual threaded bolt instead of a rubber stopper, and it's gonna work much better as an anti-rattle device for this section of the ball mount. From the center of the hitch pin hole to the center of the ball right here, that's gonna be 12 1/2 inches. That'll let you know where your trailer's gonna sit relative to your truck. And if I take the hitch pin and clip out, those are included, you'll see that there's two hitch pin holes to actually choose from, and those are spaced an inch apart. We we're attached to this one right here where it's further in the hitch receiver, so if we needed a little extra room, we could slide out to this one and get ourselves a little bit more clearance. The ball has a chrome plating on it that'll help it resist rust and corrosion over time and help keep it looking new for longer, and then the rest of the ball mount has a black powder coat finish over it. It's not gonna make it immune to rust and corrosion, all of this as you use it will break down and wear over time, but all of these measures will help keep it protected for a little bit longer. Overall, I think it's a pretty solid ball mount. The one thing I might suggest comparing it to is the B&W Tow & Stow. That one is also going to have a pintle hook attachment that comes with it, very comparable weight capacities, and with that one, when it's not in use, you can flip it around backwards, so it isn't sticking out so far from your hitch. That's gonna make it a lot less obtrusive if we wanna leave it in the hitch between towing, so it's not going to be as much of a hazard to run into when you're walking around your truck and just keep it looking nicer. Regardless of which one you go with though, I think it's gonna be a pretty solid fit for your trucks, and it's nice that you have that option to hook up to a regular coupler or a lunette ring trailer with it. And that'll do it for our look at this Blue Ox Adjustable Ball Mount with the pintle hook attachment. Thanks for watching.
