Video Transcript for Curt Trailer Brake Controller Wiring Adapter Installation - 2015 Toyota 4Runner

Hey everybody, how's it going Today we're gonna be showing you how to install the Curt custom wiring adapter for trailer brake controllers here on our 2015 Toyota 4runner. So the first step of our installation, we need to find the factory brake controller port on our vehicle. Now this is gonna be located underneath the dash here and sorta to the left of the emergency brake pedal. So let's go ahead and give you a closer view of that now. So we're underneath the dash here. Here is the arm for our emergency brake pedal and directly to the left of that, we should see a large wiring harness here.

So attached to this wiring harness. We should have our brake controller port, which is gonna be this rectangular white connector that we can see here. So if yours isn't quite visible, it may be taped up within the harness here. There is a separate lead that comes off this, but it is again tapes to the main harness here. So once we find that connector, we can still use it, how it is now.

And I wanna give you guys a little bit more room to work so we can actually see what's going on. Therefore, I'm gonna take a razor knife here and I'm gonna cut the electrical tape that's holding the brake controller harness to the main harness here. Now you wanna be careful while you're doing this because you wanna make sure you don't pierce any of the wires. So I've got most of the tape cut there. So I'm going to go ahead and just pull the harness down.

You can see here, we have a much clearer view. There is that white rectangular connector for the brake controller. And then we have about six inches of wiring going into that main harness there. So once we found the factory brake controller port, we need to take the vehicle specific Curt adapter harness here. So this end here, this is this white rectangular connector that matches the one we just found.

This is gonna plug into the port on the vehicle. And this plug over here, this black rectangular connector, this is gonna plug into any Curt brake controller. So what we're gonna do is, we're gonna take this white connector here. We're gonna go ahead and reach back under the dash and plug it into the factory brake controller port. So here we go. It should really only go in one way and we should hear it click into place when it's locked. So now, we can take our other end here and plug it into the back of the brake controller. Once we've mounted the brake controller and then zip tie all of your loose wire. So now that we have the brake controller adapter harness squared away, we're ready to plug in our brake controller. Again, we'll hear it lock into place. Now we'll get up under the dash there. I'll kinda show you a little bit better view. Over out talking about mounting this. So now that we can have our controllers securely mounted, the only thing left to do here is to secure our extra wiring. We can take some of the extra zip ties that come in your kit here and secure it to some brackets or some wires under the dash. Or we could actually just tuck it in behind this panel here. And that's gonna do it today for our look and installation of the Curt custom wiring adapter for trailer brake controllers here on our 2015 Toyota 4runner..

2023 VW Atlas SEL w/factory tow package. I attempted to use my existing Curt Echo BT wireless controller. I was receiving error messages that directionals were nit working. All lights and brakes worked fine. VW had gor a week, found a bliwn fuse snd a bad “brake control module “, but they told me if I had the same issue again, it would be my responsibility. So decided to go the wired route. Install was easy, after I found the trim rivet behind the hood release lever! Need to pop that and driver side kick panel then comes out w/o having to remove hood release lever. Factory harness was hanging inside this panel. Curt VW specific harness (C29JR)plugged into this and Curt controller,no issues. Unit was simple to program, but I haven’t driven trailer yet so will update upon road test! Emily at etrailer was very helpful, I sent her a photo of my VW harness plug and she confirmed the wiring harness was a match

Easy to set up and operate. The controls are less than intuitive. There’s a sensitivity dial and a force level slider that seem to affect the application of the brakes. It’s not exactly clear which one is more important or has the most impact. The unit works well at highway speed but at low speed operations seems to apply the brakes aggressively to the trailer. This is my first experience with a brake controller so can’t compare with other units. It does make parking lot operations somewhat clumsy. It definitely gets the job done though.

I bought a 7 pin trailer wiring/brake connection for my Dodge pickup. I installed it myself, the instructions were absolutely clear and correct. It was an easy installation. In the year since, I've pulled my trailer (tandem axle, 16') many times. The brakes continue to work perfectly as well as the lights. The connectors are solid, all work just like new. I recommend Etrailer parts and their people 100%!

Works well and not a bad install with the etrailer videos, my 97 Dodge Ram Sport 1500 5.2 is a””Wood” truck so I installed the truck flex where the ashtray was, works well

by:

Fairly easy to install and set up. I set it up in a 2013 DODGE Durango and pull a 5200# camper with electric brakes. Stopping is very smooth and controlled.

by:

It was easy to install using the adapter. Have not got the settings just right at this time but may be due to the brakes on the trailer need to be ajusted up. I repaced the them and packed the bearing just before replacing the old controller. So, the pads many be a little loose.

by:

Installation was easy with Adapter cable and Controller which I installed on top of dash board cover and required only one hole to be drilled. Installation location allows for easy access to adjust settings, apply the trailer brakes alone and see the display.
Tough part was locating the 2010 Ford F53, Wennibago, Vista, OEM connector which was out of sight. Remove the dash board cover, which was easy, then look for the big harness (see pictures) and the smaller cable which splits away from it. None of the literature explained that the connector is gray for six pins although only for pins are in the connector. Once found, just plug things together and it all works.

by:

Easy installation, perfect length wiring and included 4 long zip ties which was the perfect amount to secure the wires out of the way.

I connected the Curt Brake controller into my 2007 Toyota 4runner. It took 5 minutes to hook up using the curt wiring adapter for my vehicle. I pulled a 16' aluminum stock trailer with one horse in it. There were no problems with braking and the braking action was very smooth on the trailer. I also have a weight distribution on the trailer which helps with using the Toyota in an "emergency" tow. The horse had an easy 3 hour tow with smooth braking and no swaying. Thanks etrailer for all the tools that make farm life easier.

2003 Ranger XLT
Installation was fun!
I tend to ignore instructions especially when those instructions mount the device where my knee is constantly banging into that device. See the photo. Would loved to have a longer extension cable to reach into engine compartment. If you are not mechanically and electrically gifted, have somebody that is do the installation.

Had the device not initialize once at the beginning of a trip. After thirty minutes of trouble tracing, decided nothing was wrong, unplugged the cable for a few minutes then reconnected and initialization completed correctly and I had brakes. Now I unplug the device whenever I'm not towing.

Watched one of your installation videos. With the factory wiring harness adapter, that came with the Curt Tri Flex controller, installation was a breeze. It took longer to decide where to mount the controller, than it did to make the electrical connections. Used it with my tent trailer on a 2 day trip, worked perfectly. Very pleased with performance and price. See attached photo of finished installation.

by:

Great controller! Easy to adjust even on the fly. I had the controller adjusted a little aggressive and as I was trying to get out of Buffalo to go south for the winter we ran into some snow accumulation and was able to quickly dial back the controller to avoid locking up on thick snow covered roads. Literally a potential disaster! Very happy with the controller

by:

++ speedy delivery
-- ** NO MOUNTING
OR FLANGE SCREWS **. Without those I cannot install the controller.

by:

I ordered the Curt TriFlex since it would be simple to install in my 2016 Nissan Frontier with an add on cable. Though my frontier did not come with a tow package it did have all the wiring installed to make this easy to wire in. I give it a four only because the light on the controls are so dim during the day that I'm going to have issues adjusting it unless I do it at night. Also, if I have an issue with settings during the day or on a trip it will be very hard for me to make any manual adjustments on the fly.

by:

Fortunately my F150 had the trailer package so the pigtail plugged right in. Only snag
was I had to fabricate a piece to attach to the instrument panel (lower right) to get the correct angle they specify. That took some work. But it all came together nicely.
See attached picture. The brake control works great. Good price.

by:

initially had trouble finding the Toyota connector since there was an unidentified cover on it but worked well after locating it

by:

Using the Curt wiring adapter, installing the Curt TriFlex brake control in my 2006 Toyota Tundra was simple after watching your video. Very pleased with everything I ordered from e trailer.

by:

This is my second Curt Triflex. I bought this to replace the highly vaunted Tekonsha P3 which was too sensitive for my 2003 Dodge Ram hooked to a 2019 Hart 4 horse GN trailer.
The P3 worked but kept displaying the error message "Output Shorted. No Brakes."
Well the brakes worked but I got tired of seeing that bogus message.
The Triflex has less bells and whistles, is smaller and works great. Installation is easy with the proper pigtail adapter.

by:

Brake controller lasted about 4 months then broke and needed to be replaced.

by:

I got home early today from work and found my brake controller waiting for me.(The one thing I did not like seeing was that, although I have a drop box for all parcels next to the fence, it was placed on top of the box. LAZY DELIVERY PERSON! ) Anyway, I took it in and looked it over and decide to do the install. It took longer for me to get the cover off the box where the plug goes, then to do the entire install. Since I didn't want to drill any holes(yet) I used an existing screw down low. Now, I'm just waiting for my son to bring his dump trailer over, which he will leave with me for a few months. Stay tuned, more pictures and review still to come.

I’ve owned 5 brake controllers. This is the only one I’ve disliked. This controller has non digital controls (should have been my first clue it might not be good) it just has two slide controls. Problem is two things, the slide controls themselves are black, the same color as the case on the unit and you can’t even see the position of the slide controls because they blend in with the color of the case. It’s impossible to tell if they’re turned down all the way, turned up all the way, in the middle? The other problem is that the slides are so imprecise, They slide way too easily and there’s no detents and I found if you even bump the unit slightly or are going over rough roads the slide switches migrate. I was towing a couple of weeks ago and I thought I had the switches dialed in as good as I could, I was on some rough roads, due to road construction in the area, the output switch vibrated over to maximum and the next time I hit the brakes , the trailer locked up completely. So I had to turn it off until I could get to the next town where there was a parking lot I could readjust. I’m definitely getting rid of this thing and I definitely recommend you do not buy it. Buy something with digital output controls so you know precisely where the settings are. I firmly believe this controller is dangerous and I know if I keep using it I’m going to get an accident.

by:

Had same brand unit prior to this one on an earlier truck. Different trucks and trailers. Both hooked right up to truck wiring and adjusted perfectly to get the trailer stopped without drama. Easy to get the trim just right, good confidence builder.

by:

Wow! All works to perfection ! From the Website wade of specification of what I needed for my set up to fast delivery and plug n play install ! This is my second order from etrailer & will be for all my needs!
I installed it to my right knee side , so not to hit it in & out daily, but any place will work - tie up extra wire securely. Safe journey !!

by:

Worked as desribed,I had no problem installing after watching video. After taking fuse box cover off my wires were hooked up already,no work to do there. For me a straight up easy install that seems to work great.Drove 130 miles after install ,no issues.

by:

I had high hopes, but unfortunately this controller never worked properly. I tried everything and it only worked with manual control. I thought maybe I was doing something wrong. I finally gave up and took my truck and trailer to a technician. He tested everything and said everything I hade done was perfect with wiring, but the controller was defective. He recommended another product to me and it’s working great now! The knob was also so sensitive, you could never really set it where you wanted. The whole ordeal cost me About $200, plus now I have to fight for a refund, which I probably won’t receive! Curt makes great products, I just got a bad one! etrailer is excellent to deal with.
