Axle Dimensions

Hub Face and Spring Center Measurements on Standard Trailer Axle

There are multiple ways to measure the length of an axle beam, but the hub-face-to-hub-face and spring-center-to-spring-center lengths are the most accurate. Hub face (A) refers to the length of the axle measured from the base of one wheel stud to the base of the wheel stud on the opposite side of the axle.

The spring center (B) is the approximate width of your trailer. It is measured from the center of the spring seat on one side of the axle to the center of the seat on the other. This axle beam comes with the spring seats welded on.

If you are replacing your trailer's axle, you should be able to figure out which type you need by determining your trailer's capacity, the bolt pattern of your wheels, the brake type and the aforementioned lengths.

E-Z Lube Spindles Make Lubrication Simple

The E-Z Lube spindles on this axle are meant to work with E-Z Lube-compatible hubs to make lubricating your bearings quick and easy. Each E-Z Lube spindle has a zerk fitting on the end. And every E-Z Lube hub comes with a grease cap that has an easy-to-remove rubber plug. Just pop out the plug on the cap to access the zerk on the spindle. When you inject grease into the zerk with a grease gun, the grease will flow to both the inner and outer bearings of the hub, lubricating the bearings and forcing out old, ineffective grease. Once you see new grease beginning to be pushed out, you know that your bearings are fully lubricated. This means that you can lubricate the bearings without the mess of taking apart the entire assembly.

Dexters

Dexters are made of high-strength steel and come with spindles and spring seats welded on. The spring seats are attached to the underside of the axle so that the leaf springs (sold separately) can mount beneath the axle. This axle is also built with drop spindles, which will lower the ride height of your trailer to allow for easier loading and unloading.

Each axle is manufactured to create a certain camber angle. This ensures that the angle of the wheels is correct for your towing needs. Because the primary concern when towing is maintaining controlled, in-line movement, each axle is made so that your trailer's tires will run along the pavement evenly, with contact across the width of the tread. The result is excellent straight-line acceleration for steady, in-line tracking. You might notice the bend near the center of the axle; this is what ensures the proper camber angle. Having the center ride a bit higher and the sides of the axle bent lower allows the axle to give just enough to compensate for the load.

Determining the Bolt Pattern

The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.

Bolt Pattern - Even

On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: 8 on 6-1/2 means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)

Bolt Pattern - Odd

To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: 5 on 4-1/2 means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)

Bolt Pattern - Side

Measuring the distance (D) from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

  • If D = 2-5/8", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2"
  • If D = 2-3/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4"
  • If D = 3", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5"
  • If D = 3-1/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2"

Video Transcript for Measuring To Choose The Right Trailer Axle

In order to find the correct replacement axle for your trailer there's a few things you need to do. The first one is we need to determine the capacity. The first place I always check for the axle capacity is on the axle tag, which is actually located on the axle. Now, most of these are in the center and they could be a white sticker or they could be a metal plate. Now, not all of them list the axle capacity, but the vast majority do, that's why I look here first. Granted, this is a new axle here, so the tag is in fairly good condition, but we can see on here GAWR, gross axle weight rating, 3,500 pounds, so I know this is a 3,500 pound axle.

So if you do have an axle tag and there isn't a capacity listed on there there may be a serial number, an axle number. And in which case, you could actually reach out to the actual manufacturer with this information and they should be able to give you the capacity. Some of the more common axle manufacturers on the market are Dexter and Lippert. So if you don't have an axle tag, that's okay. There is still other options to determine the capacity.

One would be to take a fabric tape measure and record the circumference of your axle tube. Now, once we have the circumference we can use the appropriate formula to get the diameter. And then using the diameter there's sort of a general axle guideline to determine capacity based on that diameter. So, for example, a 3,500 pound axle is gonna have a 2 3/8 inch diameter beam. Now, a 3 inch diameter beam would represent anywhere from a 5,200 pound to a 7,000 pound axle.

And there's also some larger ones as well as some smaller ones. So if we don't have that axle tag there we could just measure the diameter here of our axle tube. And another way is to actually look at the brake mounting flange bolts. Now, this is just gonna give you a rough ballpark. The 3,500 pound assemblies, they usually use this 4 bolt pattern where it's the larger 5200 to 7,000 pounds, use that 5 bolt pattern.

So that's more of a general guideline. That's certainly not all you wanna do, but it will help you reaffirm when you're measuring. So once we get to capacity there's two more things that we need to gather. The next one is going to be the hub face length. So the hub face length is gonna take our brake hubs into consideration. We're gonna be measuring from the part of the brake hub where our wheel mounts from one side to the other. So we'll go ahead and do that now. Now, once we have our hub face length, we need to determine our spring center length. So the spring center length is gonna be from the center of the leaf spring perch from one side to the other. So once we have all this information we can then use that to select the correct replacement axle for our trailer. We have a ton of different options to choose from based on a few different factors. Number one is the length of our axle, both the hub face and the spring center. There's gonna be several different options for each of these. There's also gonna be different axle capacities based on how heavy you need your trailer axle to be and how heavy your trailer is. Now, we always recommend replacing what's on your trailer with the exact same one that came off. So, for example, if your old axle had an 89 inch hub face that's what we'd recommend replacing it with. And the same goes for the weight capacity, although you can upgrade. No matter what capacity you need we should still have an option for you. Now, in addition to the capacity, we're also gonna have axles with a built-in drop if you need that, or just a straight axle. And we also have some different kits that are gonna come with some different components. We can either purchase the axle, just the spindle only axle. We could get this with an idler hub, or we could get this with an electric brake drum and some electric brakes, depending on what capacity you need..

The whole staff is top notch at etrailer, and easy to get ahold on the phone. Dexter is a quality product and etrailer offers it at a fair price. The only negative I can share is the plastic plugs they ship in the hubs folded the excluder lip backwards on the inboard hub seal. It took a little bit of working by hand to fix it. It's a blind install so can't see if it went on right. Would be nice to see a better plug used there or maybe just a piece of tape over it. That's on dexter though, not etrailer.

Note I have not received any compensation for this review. I do reviews because I use other people's reviews and want to return the favor.
I wanted the largest axle that fits the wheels for my rv trailer and that is the 6000# axle, replacing a 4400# axle. FYI, I can upgrade the brakes to 7000# with different magnets but not sure the tires have that much traction. Received the parts on time and in good shape, even though the ups guy dropped the axle on concrete. Wish I wasn’t home to see that. After I placed the order there was some communications with etrailer and they delivered as promised! I have placed orders since then and will keep ordering due to continued good service.
The axle came with studs pressed in but I knocked them out and used nuts/bolts to bolt on the brake plate assemblies.
I cut off the spring seats and welded on new ones in the needed location, as planned. I could have ordered the axle with the spring seats where I needed them but I was in a hurry and figured this way was faster. And etrailer had the best price and had good service on many prior purchases.
Installed the axle and adjusted the brakes. Note, I soldered the wiring connections and sealed.
Performed a break in procedure and took the trailer on a long trip. During the trip the brakes started getting grabby and I had to dial back the trailer brakes. Once home, I adjusted the brakes and it took quite a bit of adjustment. From now on I will be prepared to adjust the brakes during trips. I expect the brakes to work better on the next trip. Honestly, this is the first trailer I have owned with brakes and am not used to needing to adjusting brakes.

Replaced a 3,000 lbs axle with this 5,200 lbs axle with electric brakes.
Was easy, quality was great. Brakes were easy to wire up and all is working.
I would recommend this axle assembly.

I ordered these August 1st and they just arrived 4 1/2 months later. I don't blame Etrailer for that. It's just the way things were with supply since then. Etrailer kept me updated as things changed. Since I live in Maine and will have to install them outside I won't be doing it until spring. I have checked everything over though and the quality looks excellent. I have never had any problem with anything from Etrailer. This package deal was at a great price and includes everything except the U bolt mounting kit which I bought separately.

I finally got to finish the trailer in the spring of 2022 and install these axels and brakes. Perfect fit and Im very happy with the results.

I ordered 2 axles snd 2 fenders on Wednesday and parts arrived on Friday at noon. Estimated ETA was 5 days. Parts were shipped same day i ordered. Parts arrived in perfect condition. I am very impressed with the super fast service, as well as being kept informed of every step. This was my first purchase from etrailer but I will definitely use them again for all my trailer needs. My only gripe, which was my fault, is in only ordered 1 Ubolt kit but I ordered 2 axles. It stands to reason if I orderedc1 ubolt kit and 2 axles it may have been an oversight on my part and a phone call or email to check if I needed 2 ubolt kits would have been nice.
I highly recommend them.

by:

This axle was exactly what I needed. There was originally a mistake in fulfillment as the axle I received did not match my order. Once the correct axle came I had no problems with installation.

by:

Highly recommend! I first made the mistake and ordered from “the other trailer parts outlet” so it took 10 days from my order to receive missing and beat up broken China made parts. The other place didn’t want to replace but wanted me to repair at my time and cost. I called etrailer, ordered on Monday, received on Wednesday. No damage as they actually package the parts up correctly. I got brand name parts too. Lesson learned. If you are on the fence or shopping around. Save yourself 10 days, 5 phone calls and hassle. Shop etrailer first.

by:

Installed a yr ago. Perfect product.
One
thing for me though....
I had to buy different fenders because I bought better tires and rims for this new axle which turned out to be slightly wider.
So the original fender would have cut into the tires.
I got everything from etrailer. Axle with brakes fully assembled, controller, fenders, wire harness, connections tires, time and more...and couldn't be happier with cust service, pricing and availability.

by:

Great high quality axles! I installed two of these on a boat trailer with one brake and one idler hub. It was a rebuild from single to dual axles. All the parts were well organized and packaged well and free shipping- thanks etrailer! Good service and value all around. I hauled the boat about 100 miles today and it all works perfectly. A vast improvement in performance.

by:

Joann was very knowledgeable and very helpful.. my trailer axle and parts arrived on time and everything was in order..it doesn’t get any easier..

Comments
The wire that Dexter uses to run through the axles to connect to the brakes is not heavy enough. The brakes are wired with number 16 wire and they run 18 which is basically speaker wire through the axle and it burns through at the connection every time I dont understand why they run such cheap wire through the axle

I purchased these axles and brakes to replace the old axles on my car hauler. Everything went smoothly with this order. I received my axle and hubs much faster than I anticipated. The parts were well packaged and everything is exactly as I ordered it. I had never installed hubs on trailer axles but after watching one of etrailer's instructional videos I had both sides of the idler axle done in less than 30 minutes. I had similar results on the axle that I put electric brakes on as well. Dexter axles with the EZ-Lube spindles are well worth the money. Bottom line I couldn't be happier with the products and service.

by:

Awesome and easy to throw together. Exactly what I needed to fix up my hauler!

by:

The product is all I could have asked for. The package was complete in that all fasteners, were included along with the proper lubrication. Each item was made/machined well and went together without any problem. After the first year no problems, all bolts, nuts, and fittings are tight and working well. If need be I will buy from E-Trailor again.

by:

This company has by far the best customer service I have experienced in a long time. The majority of my order was received promptly with the remainder being damaged in transit. I received at least 4 emails about this and the issue was resolved within 12 hours. I would highly recommend eTrailer to others.

by:

No problems or issues with quality. Assembly went well. The price was fair and shipment was packaged excellently. Freight was a little slow, possibly due to Covid or product shortage and across nation travel.
No problems with assembly due to attached paperwork.
Very good results.
Thank You.

by:

I can not say enough about how good your product is! The installation went very smooth.
I would highly recommend your product.
It was great to see that everything comes with it right down to the grease.

Delivered a $1200 axle on sooner than promised. Thank you!

Everything went together perfect. My trailer is strong and safe now. Glad I bought my replacement parts threw E-Trailer

by:

I purchased this to replace a bent idler axle on an older Pequea utility trailer. I figured it made sense to upgrade to an axle with brakes while I was at it - and I was rewiring the trailer anyway so adding brake wires was no big deal as part of that project.

Installation was simple. I was a little worried about assembling the brakes and bearings just because I hadn't done it before, but I watched some videos and it was very easy. I've put around 1000 miles on it in the year I've had it and it's held up great so far.

by:

I bought two of these axles to replace 2 off brand ones that needed brakes, hubs and bearings. These were only slightly more expensive, and got me to a name brand. The kit came with actually extra axle nuts, and you have to assemble the brakes and hubs yourself, which was no problem. I had two slight issues. The first was that one of the brake wires that travels through the axle had a tiny bit of damage, exposing the actual copper wire itself, however there was plenty of wire left to fix this. But it would definitely be a failure down the road if I didn't see it when installing. The second problem I had was more of a shipping issue. They include a tube of grease in the box that has both hubs and breaks in it, the plastic cap of the grease tube opened up, and coated everything and damaged the box to the point that it literally opened up on the poor UPS carrier at my door, dumping the contents on the ground, however shipping issues aren't the main focus of the review, and it only happened to one, not the other axle's box. Thankfully, everything I ordered is tough enough that it was not bothered. Overall, this was an excellent solution to my problem, and I called to order this to double check what I read on the site, service was great, order processed quickly! I will come back for future needs!

by:

Great service, fast delivery, and exceptional support. I would never think of buying trailer parts anywhere else. The axle purchased was of high quality, and the wheels are top notch. Very happy with my purchase!

Comments
The axle and wheels have been on my trailer for a year. The brakes are responsive and powerful, and react well to the brake controller. The wheels have been excellent, and the rims are true and work great. I do t have anything bad to day about this setup!

Packaged well, delivery ahead of time, deducted one start as I expected the axles to be assembled with brakes bearings etc all complete not packaged separately adding hours to my initial estimate.

  • Recommended Solution for Axle, Wheel and Tires To Stay Under 102 Inch Maximum Trailer Width
I'll start out by saying that it's not that a trailer over 102" is going to be illegal, but it does require special permits in most cases; this will depend on the state laws where you reside. You are correct that with the configuration you're seeking it will be over that width and additional permits will be required for this trailer since you're going to be about 1" wider than the 102" limit, and there is not a wheel and tire combo that you can use to keep you under this.
