Wiring Your Towed Car with Hopkins

Wiring your car for flat towing has never been easier. No more testing wires or splicing into your electrical system. No need to painstakingly position multiple diodes beneath your vehicle. No worries about voiding your warranty. With this custom-fit towed vehicle wiring kit from Hopkins, all you have to do is plug the harness into your vehicle's existing wiring, which is located behind your car's tail light assemblies. No cutting, tapping, or splicing is required.

After plugging in the wiring harness, use the included bracket to mount the 4-way flat connector at the front of your towed car. An extension loop (sold separately) is required to connect your towed car to your RV.

Do You Need a Brake Light Relay?

Because your vehicle has a combined lighting system - wherein the brake signals and the turn signals are carried on a single wire - a brake light relay (RM-88400 - sold separately) may be required if you use a supplemental braking system with your towing setup. A supplemental braking system depresses the brake pedal in your towed car every time you apply the brakes in your RV. So, if your towed car's brake lights illuminate when the brake pedal is pressed and the engine is off - as is the case when towing - then you need to install a relay to ensure that the lights on your towed car always act in accordance with the signals sent by your RV via the wiring harness. Without a relay, the brake signal from your towed car will override the turn signal sent by your RV when you slow down to make turns, creating a potential hazard.

2017 Jeep Cherokee

I ordered all the parts required to safely flat tow out 2017 Jeep Cherokee Trailhawk from etrailer.com. The only part they didn't have was the Mopar Flat Tow Enhancement kit Jeep requires to flat tow this model.

Ordering from them was great, the website is easy to use and I was able to locate all the pieces compatible with my specific vehicle. The expert recommendations help my decision choosing the right parts. I ordered from etrailer even though I found some of the parts on other websites a little cheaper. I chose to pay a little more because of all the effort etrailer has put into installation videos and guides. I was very pleasantly surprised to learn from etrailer that they have a price match guarantee!

So my equipment consisted of the following

Mopar Flat Tow Enhancement Kit (from Jeep)

Roadmaster Battery Charge Line Kit for Towed Vehicles

Mighty Cord 7-Way RV Style Trailer Connector - Trailer End

WesBarg 7-Way, RV-Style Connector w/ 6' Long Coiled Cable Trailer End

Pollak Black Plastic, 7-Pole, RV Blade-Style Trailer Socket - Vehicle End

Hopkins Custom Tail Light Wiring Kit for Towed Vehicles

SMI Stay-IN-Play DUO Supplemental Braking System

Roadmaster Brake-Lite Relay Kit for Towed Vehicles

Blue Ox Alpha Tow Bar - Motor Home Mount - 6,500 lbs

Blue Ox Base Plate Kit - Removable Arms

Blue Ox Tow Bar Cover - Aladdin, Aventa LX, Aventa II

The installation videos are great but not all inclusive. Take the time to read the instructions that come with the parts. This is a major project, I took about 30 hrs over a full week but as you'll see in the pictures I took s few extra steps to make a cleaner look.

Some of those extra steps:

The base plate install requires the bumper be modified cutting off a flange on each side, I spray painted this to prevent corrosion.

In the install video of the baseplate on the drivers side they use an extra quick link (not included) to run the safety cable around the wiper fluid reservoir. I took the time to remove it and run the safety cable behind it.

I didn't want our nice new vehicle to look like it can be towed so I played the brake away switch and 7 way trailer plug behind the license plate, so when not being towed our vehicle looks great!

Some things to be aware of. The Brake air cylinder that mounts to the brake pedal with four bolts may need longer bolts, it did on our Jeep. Spend the money for weather tight heat shrink crimp fittings. The Hopkins wire harness was about 1.5 feet short to get to my plug location. Buy extra zip ties, electrical tape and split loom.

I recommend reading all the various installation manuals and watching all the videos because the various components integrate together and if you install one at a time you'll be doing a bunch of extra work.

The brake light relay is a real pain in the butt, not because of the hardware but because of the location of the brake light switch which is very hard to get to.

Overall I am very happy with the products and how the installation looks. We haven't towed it yet but do not expect any problems.

Still very happy with our purchase. We’ve towed over 10k miles and have had zero issues with our tow setup. I’ve shared my experience with several other RVrs and recommended your company for their needs. Thank you

It fit my Jeep Cherokee. I did take it to an independent shop for installation. They found they did not need to remove the front cowling as suggested in the instructions. It was easy to fish from the underside of the car two in front of the radiator where it was wired into another receptacle. I have since towed the Cherokee approximate 4000 mile with all lights working properly.

It works well. Did not need to remove front bumper facia as instructed. Made job a lot easier

Saturn Relay

The product works as specified perfectly. I've used it for several thousand miles without issue. I followed the installation video and completed the work in less than an hour. It was fairly easy but did require me to lift the Jeep on ramps to get under the car. The only change I made: I replaced the 4-pin connector with a 6-pin connector. Also, because of the wiring of my model Jeep, I had to pair the installation with RM-88400 (Roadmaster Brake-Lite Relay Kit). I am a DIYer but not a car mechanic.

2017 Jeep Cherokee

This is a quality kit. I installed it on our new 2017 Jeep Cherokee Latitude. All of the connections were very easy and clean with no cutting of the Jeep wiring harness. I took the time to run it all through plastic automotive wire loom and under the belly pan. I did the installation myself so I knew it would be done correctly. Professional installers would not have taken the time or spend the extra few dollars to purchase the protective wire loom. I hid the six pin trailer connector behind the front license plate because I did not want the connector sticking out of the grill. I also purchased an additional short trailer connector so I could unplug the wiring harness from the front fascia of the jeep so I did not have to cut wiring if I needed to change something or make a repair. Everything worked perfectly when completed. I am very pleased with this product.

2014 Jeep Cherokee

I bought this because it was supposed to require no splicing of wires. On my 2014 Jeep Cherokee Latitude when I tried to pass the plugs that go on the end of the wire through the body to where the taillights are mounted I found that the plugs don't fit through the hole in the body. The video was great but it didn't show how they got the plugs through the body. My solution was to cut the harness, pass it through the body then use waterproof butt connectors to reconnect the harness.

by:
2017 Jeep Cherokee

This kit was perfect fit and relatively easy to install. I used a 6-Pin connection instead of the 4-Pin so I could include a power conductor.

by:

Super easy plug in installation

by:
2015 Jeep Cherokee

A kind of "plug and play" solution for wiring my car to be towed behind my motor home. Easy plug in harness with plenty of wiring to reach the front of the car. Much easier than cutting the existing wiring to install diodes.

by:
2018 Jeep Cherokee

Bought a different wiring harness from another vendor and after installation the lights did not work correctly.
Ordered this harness from etrailer as it was the recommendation for a custom fit.
Easy installation just like the other harness, but this one works perfectly.
No feedback to the coach and correct light sequence.

Jeep Cherokee

Jena did a terrific job of unravelling the confusion of the correct part for my new Jeep Cherokee TrailHawk. Installation was easy and relatively quick considering I had no access to a lift, which would have cut the time involved about in half. As usual E-trailer comes through in customer service and product knowledge.

by:

The Hopkins tail light kit works great, no wires to cut. I appreciate the etrailer videos, a big assist so you don't go into a job blind.

by:

Wanted a system that would work with vehicle lights. Easy install and works as described.

by:

Worked perfect. Thanks.

by:

This was to replace the one I purchased from you about 2 to 2 1/2 years before this one. It appeared to have a couple of bad diodes. It lasted about a year and then I sold my motor home.

by:

I haven't installed it yet, but it looks great and the instructions and video online assure me that the installation will go smoothly.

by:

Could not have been easier to install. Everything fit perfectly. Videos were very helpful. Low level skill required for install.

  • Wiring Harness Recommendations For Flat Towing 2014 Jeep Cherokee Trailhawk
You do need a compatible flat tow wiring harness to safely tow your 2014 Jeep Cherokee TrailHawk 4x4. My best recommendation for you is the Hopkins # HM56208 which is custom made to plug into your vehicle's existing wiring. In addition to a wiring harness, flat towing your Cherokee TrailHawk 4x4 from your RV requires quite a few different parts if you haven't obtained these already. Not only do you need a tow bar like the Roadmaster # RM-522 with a compatible baseplate like our # e98952,...

I do have an option for you, however the Hopkins Custom Tail Light Wiring Kit # HM56208 referenced in your question is not compatible with the new 2019 model Jeep Cherokee. For tow bar wiring I instead recommend the Roadmaster Diode 7-Wire to 6-Wire Flexo-Coil Wiring Kit # RM-15267. This diode kit lets you wire the Jeep so that it accepts the basic signal lights from your RV while it's being towed. It includes a 6-Way connector that you will mount to the front of the vehicle and enough...
