Wiring Your Towed Car with Hopkins

Wiring your car for flat towing has never been easier. No more testing wires or splicing into your electrical system. No need to painstakingly position multiple diodes beneath your vehicle. No worries about voiding your warranty. With this custom-fit towed vehicle wiring kit from Hopkins, all you have to do is plug the harness into your vehicle's existing wiring, which is located behind your car's tail light assemblies. No cutting, tapping, or splicing is required.

After plugging in the wiring harness, use the included bracket to mount the 4-way flat connector at the front of your towed car. An extension loop (sold separately) is required to connect your towed car to your RV.

Do You Need a Brake Light Relay?

Because your vehicle has a combined lighting system - wherein the brake signals and the turn signals are carried on a single wire - a brake light relay (RM-88400 - sold separately) may be required if you use a supplemental braking system with your towing setup. A supplemental braking system depresses the brake pedal in your towed car every time you apply the brakes in your RV. So, if your towed car's brake lights illuminate when the brake pedal is pressed and the engine is off - as is the case when towing - then you need to install a relay to ensure that the lights on your towed car always act in accordance with the signals sent by your RV via the wiring harness. Without a relay, the brake signal from your towed car will override the turn signal sent by your RV when you slow down to make turns, creating a potential hazard.

The Hopkins wiring kit works great. Fairly easy to install and you can get great support from etrailer.

Still working great. Haven’t had any issues. Highly recommend.

Works great. Videos helped. Keep up the good service.

by:

Excellent wiring harness. All connectors fit perfectly, and the utube videos helped me complete the wiring.

by:

This wiring kit is the way to do it right. I was using a magnetic light set which is OK, but the is so much better. The connections are custom designed for your vehicle with factory style plugs. No tow light wires draped over your vehicle since you run the wire along the frame to the front of the towed car. I should have bought this when I bought the tow bar.

2015 GMC Terrain

Works great. Easy to install. So much better then having additional lights to carry around and install each time I tow. I just plug in the "Towed" like any other trailer, and it's all done. Would do it again if I got a new "towed."

I love both products. Getting the wire harness was such a good idea. Im happy you had it or I would be using magnetic lights and that would suck. The base plate and tow bar are perfect for towing our GMC. Unfortunately the Blue Ox cover was lost on a drive without the tow vehicle. I think they need to make the straps better to ensure they stay on during no tow driving. That is the only suggestion I have.

Kit worked out great. Can't believe I had waited to get this. Was easy to install and have had no issues since!

2015 Chevrolet Equinox

I installed a tow bar setup on my parents Chevy Equinox about a year ago so they could pull it behind their motor home. With that I installed this wiring harness for the towing lights. I have to say the installation went very well and did not require a masters degree to do it. Some simple tools a little planning and a couple hours of your time and you can have this installed and working. It made the hook up a lot easier for my father because it is one plug just like plugging in a trailer. The quality is vary high and so far it has been completely trouble free. It also does not interfere with the proper operation of the lights in the car. If your going to tow a car behind your motor home I highly recommend this harness. This review setup offers a place to add pictures but the harness installs so nice that you can not see it to take a picture of it. So just imagine the wire comfortably installed along with the original wires in your car. Also along with all the other good stuff I mentioned they also have a video you can watch that will show you exactly what to do. What more could you ask for. Worth every penny.

2017 Chevrolet Equinox

Have had the product installed on my 2017 Chevrolet Equinox LT for one year and it has performed flawlessly! Easy item to install with a great video from etrailer.com. It is a quality product that does not have to cut into the OEM wiring harness. It just plugs into the existing connectors. I recommend this wiring harness to connect my RV to my Equinox for dinghy towing.

by:

Ordered and install base plate over a year ago and finally got to use it a couple of weeks ago because motorhome was in shop waiting on parts. Pandemic and supply chain issues. Anyway, the base plate and accessories work great. Dinghy tracks well. Hardly know it’s back there.

Purchased the towing adapter for my GMC Terrain a few week ago, received it on time & boxed not damaged. Watched the videos’ about three time on how to do it myself and started one evening and finished it the next morning about three hours with Beer Breaks, LoL. All the parts fix perfectly, had no problems with any of the parts, Product is real sturdy and if you don’t know where to look at the bumper you will not see the hide away receiver brackets. Very nice product, do it yourself and save money. up loading tgwo Phoos

2015 Chevrolet Equinox

The large library of 'how to' videos' that Etrailer offers are just super. They answer so many 'pre-purchase' questions. No other site seems to offer so much help. I was originally sent the wrong light kit by mistake. They had a replacement in the mail the same day I called. GREAT service.

Hopkins Custom Tail Light Wiring Kit for Towed Vehicles Item # HM56108. Arrived early. Directions and Video are quite helpful. The Kit was very easy to install. This Kit was the second one I have installed and all the lights work perfectly.

2017 GMC Terrain

This plug and play wiring kit is the only way to go. I've done the individual diode kit before and the small cost-saving is not worth the hassle. If a custom kit is available for my next vehicle, I will be sure to use one again. By the way, the etrailer video was a big help in the do it yourself installation process.

Simply test the stop/turn/running light signal that plugs into the factory pigtail and then see if the signal is carried out on the wire(s) that run to the converter box. If just one signal becomes inoperable then chances are the converter box is bad and the unit will need to be replaced.

  • Troubleshooting Fuse Pulling Information on 2014 Chevy Equinox for Flat Towing
The owners manual states pulling the #32 fuse for the Discrete Logic Ignition Switch as you stated but GM put out a technical service bulletin that stated for the 4-cylinder models you should leave that DLIS fuse in and pull the ABS fuse because this new procedure eliminates wobble that occurs when towing the 4 cylinder models from 2010-2017. You will want to install the battery charge line # RM-156-25 as there is a stronger pull for power while towing that can deplete your Equinox battery.
