Recommended Parts for Flat Towing a 2010 - 2015 GMC Terrain

Question:

Just sold my 2010 GMC Terrain with the EZ kit that we pulled behind my RV with a Roadmaster Sterling All Terrain. Just upgraded to a 2015 Terrain. What kit do I need?

Your 2010 GMC Terrain would have used the Roadmaster EZ Base Plate Kit # 523163-1 if you have the Roadmaster Sterling All Terrain # RM-576. Since you upgraded to the 2015 Terrain these parts will actually stay the same so you will just need to get another EZ Base Plate Kit # 523163-1.

For a complete flat towing setup you will need a base plate kit, tow bar, safety cables, vehicle tow bar wiring, a supplemental braking system, and possibly a high-low adapter. So far, with the parts listed above you have a base plate kit, tow bar, safety cables, and half of a wiring kit. To complete your wiring I recommend the Hopkins Custom Tail Light Wiring Kit # HM56108. This plugs into the connectors behind your tail lights and the is run to the front of your Terrain.

Once you run the 4-Way up to the front of your Terrain cut the connector off and splice the wiring into your 6-Way connector. Since you already used this on your 2010 Terrain you will need a new vehicle end 6-Way # RM-910030-7. Connect your ground (white) to the pin in the 2 o'clock position, your left turn/stop to the pin in the 5 o'clock position, your right turn/stop to the pin in the 7 o'clock position, and your taillights (brown) to the pin in the 12 o'clock position (see attached photo). I like this wiring setup because you can also install the Charge Line Kit # RM-156-25 from your battery to the center pin to keep your battery from draining.

Since most states now require the use of a supplemental braking system I recommend using the SMI Stay-IN-Play DUO # SM99251. Once it is installed you won't be able to tell that it is there and then activating it is simply connecting the breakaway switch and turning the unit on! You will need to install the Stop Light Switch Kit # RM-751439 to ensure that your taillights operate properly.

Most flat towing setups require a high-low adapter for the tow bar to remain level while towing. I have linked our selection of adapters for you to check out as well as an article that will help you determine which is the best one for your application.

According to your owner's manual it looks like you will need to pull a fuse each time before you tow your Terrain and then replace it before you drive it around. To make this process much easier and less time-consuming I recommend installing a fuse bypass. If you have a 4-cylinder then you need part # RM-76517 but if you have a V6 you will need part # RM76511.

I have attached some installation videos for you to check out as well as some helpful articles. Be sure to check your owner's manual for specific instructions on flat towing.
