Note: To determine whether you can use snow chains on your vehicle, or if they might affect your ABS/EPS functionality, consult your owner's manual.

These pewag ladder-patterned chains are great winter weather chains for your SUV, truck, or 4WD vehicle. Not only do the grooved square links dig into deep snow and ice better than rounded or standard square links, but the reversible design of these chains also allows them to wear under standard use much longer than other chains. And if you're partial to American-made products, you'll be happy to know that these are made in Colorado.

Confirming Your Fit

If you know your tire size, you may think you won't need to test fit your new chains. But there are a lot of variables that can affect whether chains will fit your specific tires, including your tire type, the amount of air pressure in the tire, the amount of tread wear, and the tire manufacturer.

We recommend that you order chains as early in the season as possible to give yourself plenty of time to test fit the chains and reorder if needed. This way, you won't be stuck out in the cold later with snow chains that don't fit.

You can test fit these chains in your garage or driveway, but you'll want to wait until there's snow on the ground to actually drive with them. Likewise, if you're out in the snow and come across bare pavement, you'll want to pull over and remove the chains. These chains can cause damage to the bare pavement, your garage floor, or your vehicle if they break from the wear of riding on a harsh surface.

Installing Snow Chains

Installing these chains is simple.

Lay chains on the ground to get all the tangles out

1. Lay out the chains on the ground to make sure there are no twists or kinks.

Drape chains over tire.

2. Drape the chain over your tires, making sure that the prongs attaching the cross chains to the side chains face away from your sidewalls. Drive forward about half a tire rotation.

Connect the chain behind the tire

3. On the back of the tire, pull the chain tight and hook the ends together. Repeat this on the front of the tire.

Twist cams

4. Insert the included tool into the cam and twist to tighten the sidewall chain. Twist as many cams as it takes to get a tight fit.

Attach optional tensioners

5. Drive forward 2-3 vehicle lengths and recheck the chain tension. Tighten any loose cams. If needed, rubber adjusters (sold separately) can help you get a tight fit. Make sure the hooks on the adjusters face away from your tire so your wheels don't get scratched.

Quick Tips:

  • Lengthen the life of snow chains by drying them after each use before you store them.
  • Check out our installation kit with safety lights and a kneeling pad (PO34FRK) to make things a little easier when you're installing chains out in the snow.

How to Choose Snow Chains for Your Vehicle

To choose the right snow chain, you must match your tire size. Those measurements can be found on the side of your tire.

Tire size on sidewall

185/60-15

  1. (185) - indicates tire width in millimeters
  2. (60) - gives you the aspect ratio (sidewall height as percentage of width)
  3. (15) - denotes the diameter of the wheel rim in inches

Pewag PWE2228SC chains are nothing fancy. Good old traditional design. Came in a canvas bag with no closure. Successfully mounted them on P165/70R17 tires. Have not tested them in real-life snowy conditions. After chains are on, should drive vehicle 1/4 to 1/2 tire revolution, then tighten chain hooks further. Adding additional tension cords almost a must. Picture shows chain loosening at 6 o'clock and 7 o'clock positions after driving only a few feet. Consider adding threaded chain link to tie down extra free links to prevent them from flopping around when driving. Flopping chains are know to cut brake and ABS lines and cause other damage to the vehicle, especially if chains are installed on front tires. Thule XG12 Pro may be a better choice for front tires, because nothing flops around on the medial side of chains.

Didn't include a cam wrench, or a recommendation to order the wrench separately. What came is what I ordered but not what I needed to use the product. So: average.

2013 Toyota 4Runner

Am glad to have these chains just in case and for the trips through the mountains :) They are very high quality, Pewag is the best for chains, whether for snow tire or security.. I bought a cheaper set (A different brand) a few years back from one of your local auto parts stores, one of the links broke the first day I used it, very low quality.. Sometimes it is a bummer upfront paying the higher cost for quality, but in the long run it is always worth it.. These Pewag chains can not be beat.. You can tell they built these to last, very strong and durable. The old chains I had might as well have been mesh wire compared to these bad boys.. Plus before I ordered I looked up the Versatility so these chains fit my 4runner now and they should fit my dream Land Cruiser that I am hoping to buy in a few years.

I am always very impressed with ordering from Etrailer.. They are always very helpful, professional and seem to actually care about their customers; which many businesses seem to not anymore.. They ship quickly and I always seem to get what I ordered faster than I think it will take. Prices are very reasonable, People are great to work with. The way they run their business is the way it should be ran. I am very happy with this company and am glad to buy products from them, I always love helping supporting companies that do such a wonderful job at what they specialize in! You guys should carry the Pewag security chain as well. Thanks again!

Great service provided by etrailer I will definitely purchase again when tire chains are needed. As for the chains themselves, very impressed with the quality and ease at which they install. Have purchased Pewag chain before so I new the quality, would be there and it is.

2022 Nissan Titan

I bought the chains, the Titan chain adjuster #TCMA3 and the cam tightening tool and all work great. The chains fit my 245 60/R20 tires just as expected. I used the drape over method to test out the chains, but I would probably try to roll onto them in practice because the tire is so big, there's some space between cross chains when I brought the ends together. I could probably just drive a bit and then retighten them.

I got the glacier multi arm adjusters and these Pewag chains best purchase I made for Montana elk hunt 2019. Snowed every day in mountains. Had to break a trail every day in order to keep road open. Worked great under tough conditions.

2019 Lexus LX 570

These chains are excellent. Made in USA from what appears to be an Austrian company. This size fit a 2019 lX570 very well. 275/50-21 Way easier to install and more traction than cable chains.

Normally don’t write reviews like this, but making an exception in this case. I ordered this set of Pewag chains on a Sunday evening and had them in my possession the following Wednesday morning. The quality of the chains are excellent, but the quality of the service I received was exceptional! I cannot remember the last time I received customer service like this? I received a personal phone call regarding my order and emails updating me of its progress. Even received an email after delivery making sure I was happy! Makes me want to complete another purchase! THANK YOU!!!

Chains worked as designed. We use them in our trips to our farms in Montana and Wyoming when roads are open of course. Truck and trailer do not slip or fish tail.

So far, these chains look like they will deliver. I wanted something better than a cable chain that only lasts one storm. In my local, we typically get freezing rain with temperatures in the 30's. These should be good on ice. Installation was fairly easy and the cam tensioners pulled the chains tight. I also ordered the chain tensioning bungie.

  • Tire Chains for a 2013 Toyota Tundra 4x4 and 24 to 30 Inches of Snow
Even military eqipment especially equipped for snow will have trouble with 30 inches of snow. No pickup truck is going to push this amount of snow. Maybe if you have it equipped with a snow blade to clear the road ahead of you. For heavy snow I recommend going with square links because they will have the most grip and the links tend to be larger than other chain types. I am not sure though if you should use chains while on the frozen lake since the steel could crack the ice. If you have...
