Note: To determine whether you can use snow chains on your vehicle, or if they might affect your ABS/EPS functionality, consult your owner's manual.

The Konig XB-16 Pro tire chains are great all-purpose, winter weather chains. If you live in an area where you're likely to get periodic snow and ice, these Konig chains are perfect because they're durable and easy to mount. If you're more likely to see seriously icy conditions, you may want a chain with V-bar links that can really bite into the ice to give you maximum traction.

These chains are among the easiest and fastest to install because they have built-in tensioners that you can just pull taut to adjust the fit. These tensioners allow the chains to fit your tires, no matter the profile or wear pattern. And because the tensioners are built-in, you never have to worry about losing them like you might with other chains on the market.

Confirming Your Fit

If you know your tire size, you may think you won't need to test fit your new chains. But there are a lot of variables that can affect whether chains will fit your specific tires, including your tire type, the amount of air pressure in the tire, the amount of tread wear, and the tire manufacturer. You'll also need to know how much clearance is in your wheel well, which you can determine by measuring from your tire tread to the sidewall of the wheel well.

We recommend that you order chains as early in the season as possible to give yourself plenty of time to test fit the chains and reorder if needed. This way, you won't be stuck out in the cold later with snow chains that don't fit.

You can test fit these chains in your garage or driveway, but you'll want to wait until there's snow on the ground to actually drive with them. Likewise, if you're out in the snow and come across bare pavement, you'll want to pull over and remove the chains. Even these low-profile chains can cause damage to the bare pavement, your garage floor, or your vehicle if they break from the wear of riding on a harsh surface.

Installing Tire Chains

Installing these chains is incredibly simple.

Lay chains on the ground to get all the tangles out

1. Lay out the chains on the ground to make sure there are no twists or kinks in the chains.

Connect the ends of the blue cable

2. Slide the chain behind the tire and connect the ends of the blue cable, which will sit behind the tire.

Connect the hook and link in front of the tire

3. Around front, connect the red hook to the red link.

Feed tensioning chain through clip

4. At the bottom of the tire, feed the tensioning chain through the large clip and tug it until it's tight.

Stretch the hook across the tire

5. Feed the tensioning chain through as many red clips along the side chain as you can, leaving room to still be able to stretch the hook across the tire. Attach the hook to the side chain directly across from the last clip you ran the tensioner through. The hook should face away from your tire.

6. Drive forward around 325' (about the length of a football field) and stop. Check the chains and tighten them as needed.

Quick Tips:

  • Lengthen the life of snow chains by drying them after each use before you store them.
  • Check out our installation kit with safety lights and a kneeling pad (PO34FRK) to make things a little easier when you're installing cables out in the snow.

How to Choose Snow Chains for Your Vehicle

To choose the right snow chain, you must match your tire size. Those measurements can be found on the side of your tire.

Tire size on sidewall

185/60-15

  1. (185) - indicates tire width in millimeters
  2. (60) - gives you the aspect ratio (sidewall height as percentage of width)
  3. (15) - denotes the diameter of the wheel rim in inches

Fantastic customer service, constant follow up from etrailer.com. I need the product urgently and it arrived in a couple of days all the way to Canada! The product is very high quality and was easy to install. I have a cottage with a steep hill and when it’s full of ice it’s very tough to get up even with my 4x4 now I don’t have to put sand and salt down for 500 plus feet! Konig chains are a life saver.

Thank you!

1993 Ford Ranger

Just received my Thule 247 XB16 Tire Chains. What a great product!! Got them for my 93 Ford Ranger which has 30x9.5x15 tires and they fit great! I plan on using these during snow and ice storms as I work for an electric utility and have to report to work. After viewing the etrailer instructional video I was able to put both chains on in less than 5 minutes. Delivery was quick too and I love how George J from Etrailer sent me an email quickly letting me know that my order was processed and included tracking information too! I feel confident I can count on Etrailer for future orders. Very professional and they have staff experienced with the product standing by if you have problems or questions! Thanks Etrailer!

Great! The chains are on standby in case I need them!

Product arrived quickly, and in great shape. Product did not include gloves, nor mat, but that's not a big deal. The plastic instructions are truly plastic, which is pretty nifty when considering installation in snow.

Fit on my 2018 Grand Touring CX-5 seems fine - I have yet to use the chains in snow, but I fit them on my car in the garage per the video recommendations. Video installations may tell you that the yellow tab needs to face towards the front of the vehicle - I found this to be false/true depending on if you were on the passenger or driver side of the vehicle. I believe that correct installation has the chain approach the tire from left to right, independent of vehicle direction. That is, if on the driver side (USA vehicle), the chain will be wrapped around the tire with the yellow tab coming from the front of the vehicle. If installing on the passenger side, the chain wraps coming from the rear of the vehicle. This was to ensure that the non-hooked sides (smooth side) of the chains were facing the rims on both driver and passenger installations per the installation videos.

One of the red plastic tabs required re-seating on the chain as it was inverted and would sit upside down when the chains were installed.

1 year follow-up: I used the chains on a recent road trip to a mountain snow elevation. They worked as a nice option for traveling through the mountains to get to the snow shoeing area in uncertain weather, but be sure to add extra time for the 30mph speed limit when using chains. The tension chain did seem a bit longloose on one of the tires, so I double backed to keep things tight. Not sure if thats necessary.

by:

Fortunately, I have not had to use the chains. I have reviewed installation instructions, however, and found them straightforward and have practiced putting them on several times.

Since I travel I-5 through Northern California in late Spring, I might have occasion to use the chains in the upcoming months. I believe, based on my practice installation, that I should be able to put them on my tires with little effort.

by:

I'm a little slow responding but I wanted to thank you for your expert technical advice and for masterfully navigating the logistics. The chains arrived spot on time and we were ready for our road trip. I guess the good news is we didn't have to use them but we were prepared and will be for future trips that include snow driving.
I've given 5 stars for excellent customer service, a rare commodity these days.

by:

We haven't had to use our new tire chains yet, but we were pleased with the fast, efficient service by etrailer. They arrived just days after I placed the order. The chains look very easy to install and are packed neatly in a carrying case. Thanks etrailer for great service and a great product at a reasonable price.

Konig Chains are my only choice for chains. This is a new set of chains for new vehicle; the first set I got was in the early 1990's, for a 1972 Dodge. And I have been using them ever since...

I used them once. While they did the job in the snow, they took the finish off the side of the wheel where they rubbed. Had to get both of my rear wheels refinished.

These chains were way too light duty for me. They were too small to even get through the snow down to the ice. In addition, the connectors are very small and very difficult to hook together with gloves on. Once they fill with snow and ice and they freeze, good luck getting them off as well. Ended up buying a set of regular old chains for half the price

ordering and delivery both easy and timely,Konig included everything per website.Test fit in garage proves correct sizing, thank you

Very pleased with this purchase, I've done a few practice runs putting them on my Ram Promaster van but have not had to use them in a real snow situation in this 1st year (very happy with the ease of use factor and snug fit)

If your 2017 Mazda CX-5 is equipped with 225/55-19 size tires then the Konig Standard Snow Tire Chains # TH01571247 that you referenced will fit and work perfectly. I checked the online version of the owner's manual for your Mazda CX-5 and the only listed restriction with regards to using tire chains is that they should only be installed on the front tires. Your 2016 owners manual online says to use snow chains only on the front wheels. The Konig Standard Snow Tire Chains - Diamond Pattern - D Link - XB16 - Size 245, # TH01571245, you referenced will work on your vehicle if you are using 225/65-17 tires. First thing you need to do is consult the owners manual of your 2014 Hyundai Santa Fe to determine if there are any restrictions on snow chain usage with your vehicle. Having chains on all four wheels will give you the best possible traction. If the owners manual says you can use them on all 4 I would recommend this route.
