The unit ties into the auto door lock for the passenger rear door. The control model was “overloaded or a surge” occurred that within the module and the rear door and tailgate lock are not working due to the circuit board line for the door burnt out. To replace the module cost $[XX] by dealer not because of it being hard to get to, it’s plug-n-play, but the key fob must be reprogrammed. All because the aftermarket unit overloaded the factory auto lock circuit of the rear passenger door.
Replacement doesn’t guarantee it won’t happen again an warranty is covered.

The installing of the mechanism was easy. Because there was a recall on the tailgate wiring by Honda, I had my dealer run the wiring for me. Yes is cost me, but the mechanic did a nice job of running the wiring. I think better than what I saw in the couple of videos I watched. And it was a whole lot easier than my doing it. I do have concerns about the solenoid failing and not being able to open the tailgate as mentioned in some of the reviews so I have turned of the automatic locking feature on the truck to minimize the use of the solenoid. So far it has been working great.

Works great with 2019 Honda Ridgeline, needs about a foot more wire to make it work perfect. I had to splice about a 10 inches more and followed directions to the letter. Great product!! Would buy again.

2019 Honda Ridgeline

Pop-lock installed perfectly on my 2019 Honda Ridgeline Black Edition. I routed wire up through left side rear door seal area and then to door piller wiring bundle, instead of through fire wall to fuse box. Took extra care and time in routing and tying wire under vehicle. Used nylon ties provided plus 10 or so more. Rented a lift for 1 hour for ease of wire routing. When hooking up wires in door piller, Install purple wire to small red wire, and green wire to the smaller yellow wire. It was a very easy, and smooth transaction from etrailer. Product was as described in web site, and received lock within 3 or 4 days. Great product. Great seller!

2019 Honda Ridgeline

The Pop and Lock unit I installed on my 2019 Honda Ridgeline quickly solved all of my security and safety concerns. Due to the extreme weather in December in the Northwest I had Rainier RV install the unit for me. It took less than an hour and was a breeze. Everything needed for installation was provided and the result is outstanding. From delivery on time , product as described and promised to ease of installation, I couldn’t be more pleased.

worked as advertised. I would recommend.

Worked great.

2019 Honda Ridgeline

I feel like my Ridgeline is now secure. Great add on for the Ridgeline onece you install a Toneau cover. Works great. The only difficulty with installation is taking the time to install and properly run the wiring to fuse panel.

by:
2017 Honda Ridgeline

Honestly, it worked great for a couple weeks, then it didn’t. I checked the wiring and the unit was still getting power/signal, but wasn’t firing the actuator. I submitted a request to customer service and they sent out a replacement part, but that one also failed after a couple days. I’ve kinda of just given up on it at this point…done fooling with it for now.

The video is invaluable and the install goes with what is shown. Took about 1 1/2 hours + to install with some help. Nice to have a locking tailgate that works with the OEM locks.

2017 Honda Ridgeline

I have a 2017 Honda Ridgeline on which I installed a sturdy truck bed cover. Unfortunately the Ridgeline did not have any locking mechanism for the tailgate. I was moving out of state and wanted to secure items I would leave in the bed: I then found the "Pop & Lock Custom Tailgate Lock." The price was right and an on line video was available to help with installation. My on line order arrived quickly. The written instructions were clear and the parts fit perfectly. The hardest part of the installation was guiding and securing the electrical wire under the truck from the tailgate up through the engine compartment back to the fuse box under the dash board (I am almost 70 so it probably took longer than if a younger person did the work!). Result: The unit works perfectly with the key fob in conjunction with the door locks on the truck. I can lock/unlock the tailgate from inside the cabin using the door lock button or remotely lock/unlock the tailgate using the key fob. Gives great peace of mind knowing the tailgate is securely locked and items in the bed are safe. Excellent product!

Still working great...no problems.

Once all the issues were resolved the product works as expected. Had to modify one of the metal arms (bend) to get the swing door part of the tailgate to unlock. On a positive note, customer service at Pop and Lock was fantastic. Also, there is a better way to connect to the door locks than shown in the video - I connected mine to the driver side rear door using the connection behind the driver seat belt panel. Remove the rear door jam panel along the floor, then remove the front door jam panel along the floor, then the seat belt panel pops off easily. Under the vehicle near the front of the rear door, remove the rubber plug, on the inside of the rear door is a rubber plug exposed where the panel was removed. Route the wire from under the car through these openings and follow the wiring harness into the frame between the front and the rear doors. Pressing the tab release the connector from the door wiring. remove the clip holding the wiring into the door. This will make connecting the wires easier. Tap into the small red wire and yellow wires - green to red - purple to yellow. You can Google the installation to see a video.

Still working great - love the convenience and security

2019 Honda Ridgeline

This was the easiest install I've done in a long time. Especially the tailgate lock itself. I would caution to not attempt to pry the tailgate trim off, use a soft face hammer and gently drive the trim towards the passenger side until it is free and then remove the plastic clips from the tailgate and put them back into the trim piece then set that aside for later reinstall-just match the clips with the mounting holes and tap back on. The most irritating part was trying to splice the wires together under the dash! Do use crimp on connectors and nothing else for this since the wiring in new vehicles is 22 - 24ga (or smaller) and the factory does not leave excessive slack to make it convienient. This went together quickly enough that I didn't even think of taking a few pictures, so there aren't any. Project took just over an hour to complete.

This remote tailgate lock has worked absolutely flawlessly for over a year. Price is definitely fair compared to Hondas optional add on plus installation fee

by:
2019 Honda Ridgeline

Overall I found this product to be as advertised. The biggest challenge was routing the wiring under the vehicle due to the low ground clearance. I recommend finding a hoist to use, although I was able to raise the left side and support it with 2 jackstands. The length of the wires was problematic for me using the suggested routing and I had to find an alternate point to get it into the correct location to make the connection. It remains to be seen how long-lasting the solenoid will be. If it fails in the locked position with the tailgate closed it will require destruction of the tailgate liner to get it disengaged. This could be even more traumatic if the bed is covered by a tonneau. I would seriously recommend considering the model that also has a key, even though you have to replace the factory handle with one that doesn't match the factory paint.

Timothy S.

7/23/2020

Ive not encountered any functional or quality issues whatsoever with the product. I did, however, purchase the additional piece to add a key operated capability to the tailgate lock. I did this primarily for my own peace of mind. My previous recommendation to get the version that has this therefore stands. I have been very satisfied with the product.

Honda

Product installed with only three minor problems. First, the slide bold binds against the latch rod and the latch rod had to be bent slightly to allow free movement. (This could be due to minor differences between model years or even manufacturing variability.) Second, when installing the wiring in the driver-side support column, there are two grommets under the trim for the rear door that provide access to the column. Finally, third, it would be helpful to point out that there are TWO yellow wires in the wiring harness (in the support column) and using the small one should be emphasized.

That said, once installed the unit worked perfectly. Its a good product and I would recommend it without reservation. Indeed, one has to wonder why Honda hadn't already thought of it.

6/17/2020

Working fine after one year. Only possible problem is accessing the bed when the battery is dead. I have ordered the key lock add-on but its too bad that Pop-N-Lock doesnt offer a combination unit for lower total cost. Yes, I am still completely satisfied with the device.

by:

overall it works great not too hard to install. the only issue is me. my Honda has auto locking doors with a two-way tail gate and i found that if the doors are locked and you pull the release handle the cable will pop off the latch/lock assembly. I got tired of taking the tail gate apart and reinstalling the cable so I unplugged the lock

Bill M.

2/21/2021

Not so good. The cables pop off if I forget to unlock it and pull on the handle. I have disconnected it and installed a Honda tumbler lock on the tailgate. You can not have both. The brackets interfere with each other

Sierra K.

2/26/2021

After some research it is determined that this is a known Ridgeline issue and doesn't have anything to do with the lock. A simple permanent fix for this problem is to wrap a cable tie around the swing out cable by the ball end. Or you could ask your vehicle dealer if this piece is recalled, and they will fix it for you.

2018 Honda Ridgeline

4 stars because it’s been installed couple of days however it’s working as advertised. The mechanical aspect is straight forward and has good fit but added hard foam to support actuator. I didn’t like gap between skin and actuator body. The electrical aspect is different and one has to have more than common sense to route wires into cab through fender. Several items need partial removal to have good access. Video doesn’t show all it entails to properly install this device. One has to check ‘lock’ wire with door closed otherwise no signal from tester. It’s in the lofic of car system. I used wire blocks (Wago) instead crimping. Space is ‘very’ limited. Be patient and smart. Looking fwd to find reliability of this product.

7/5/2019

All is working as advertised. I’m glad I purchased this product. I did a bit more by rust treating the area and weather proof connections. I recommend 100.

by:
2019 Honda Ridgeline

The product was successfully installed relying on the very helpful installation video obtained from the website. I regard this video as being essential to successful installation.

The device performs as advertised.

The video shows the use of 'vampire tap' connectors to make the T-splice into the existing wiring of the truck. No such connectors came in the kit I received. Opening the wires, stripping the installation and using alternate connectors to make the connections was the most difficult and tedious part of installation.

Ron D.

Still works great and exactly as advertised

by:

I’ve had mine installed now for a year. Works great. No issues with rattles either. Installation took all of an hour with the hardest part getting the wire up in to the cab. If you have a hard cover on the back you need this to help secure your stuff

Solenoid failed right after this update. Manufacturer would not warranty. Ended up putting in after market solenoid for significantly less than OEM. Works great. Would reduce to 3.5 stars with failure

To all owners of 2nd generation Ridgeline.... Pop and Lock 8600 is a great product, well recommended to anyone that want to put lock in their tailgate, easy to install (took me less that 2 hours). With the Honda OEM bed cover I have now the peace of mind to leave my belongings at the back of my truck.

Thank you etrailer.com

2019 Honda Ridgeline

Electric tailgate lock for my 2019 Honda Ridgeline was exactly what the factory should have offered. Honda dropped the ball on offering this from the factory but etrailer.com took the ball and ran. Thank you for the great installation video it really made the job easier.

1/19/2021

Still no issues after a year. Great product!

by:

Thanks to a straight forward installation manual and video, the package went in very easily and has performed perfectly. The only variation I implemented was to connect it to the rear door harness instead of running it all the way to the front of the truck. This way it acts like another door on lock/unlock. Thanks for providing a great solution for a locking tailgate.

Tom T.

3/18/2021

No problems at all. The only issue I have is that Honda seems to think it needs to be locked whenever I reach for the tailgate handle, especially when I have something in the other hand or its raining. I have been very pleased with your product. Thanks

2018 Honda Ridgeline

Good follow up communication on status of deliver. Product fit up on 2018 Ridgeline was great. Video provided on line and the installation instructions provided via email from George at etrailer.com was excellent. Installation, while somewhat detailed, went well and the locking mechanism worked flawlessly with the keyless entry system. Great product that adds security!

Jerry S.

Thanks for the follow up George. I am pleased with the product and the support. The lock is working very well since the upgraded linkage was installed. I appreciate the new parts that were provided to correct the lock problem when it stopped working

2019 Honda Ridgeline

After getting over the shock that Honda does not put locks in their Ridgelines I found this lock on etrailer and ordered mine. I did my own installation using their video as a guide. My only regret was not having to wire stripper used in the video. There is not much room to work with under the dash but I managed to finish with no problems. Everything works as promised. Definately a must for every Ridgeline.

David-2019 R.

9/19/2019

One of the bolts holding the locking mechanism became loose and I had to install a lock washer and resolved the problem. Recently the lower door release seems to stick in the locked position when I unlock the doors. I may have to take the cover off to see what the issue is.

by:
2018 Honda Ridgeline

Easy enough to install. The video doesn’t tell you how difficult reinstalling the tailgate cap can be. Routing the harnesss is aggravating. If you leave the connector near the tail gate as recommended then the harnes is too short to run the same as in the video. A mechanic by trade so I dealt with it. Good product, does what I needed. Worth the price for sure. If I were to charge someone to install it on the same truck it would be about $[XX].

I spoke with Pop & Lock and their tech said that this definitely sounds like you're spliced into the wrong wires and that the Pop & Lock Custom Tailgate Lock # PAL8600 is receiving constant power once the vehicle is on, which is why the actuator is constantly running. You'll want to make sure that the wires you splice into are only receiving power when the switch/button is pressed to lock and unlock the tailgate.
