Whereas belt-driven fans use up power from the engine to turn, electric fans do not, thus removing any unnecessary load and increasing both fuel economy and horsepower. In addition, you do not have to worry about an electric fan's slowing down at low RPM, as many belt-driven fans do, so you are guaranteed sufficient airflow regardless of the vehicle speed.

While this assembly is intended for primary cooling and should, therefore, provide enough CFM to replace your vehicle's factory fan, you will still need to determine the CFM requirements for your engine before making your purchase. And remember, engines that have been modified or vehicles often used for towing may require additional CFM. There is no limit to the number of fans you can install, as long they all fit appropriately and are mounted on the same side of your radiator so that they do not cancel each other out.

Two types of turn-on sources are available for this fan. The Derale Lighted On/Off Switch for Electric Fans (D16740) allows for manual control of your fan so that you can choose when to turn it on and off. Thermostatic controls, on the other hand, send a signal to the fan, directing it to shut off when fluid temperatures reach an appropriate level, thus saving power. Once the temperature climbs again and additional cooling is needed, the fan is automatically turned back on. Thermostat switches can be single-stage with pre-set temperatures - D16735, D16738, D16739, D16720 and D16721 - or adjustable - D16788 and D16789.

Vehicle: 1988 Ford Ranger with a 351 V8. This fan and shroud fits the Ford Ranger V8 custom radiator very well. With the short nose water pump this fan / shroud combination has 1/2 inch of clearance from the back of the fan to the water pump pulley. After idling my truck for 20 minutes in 90 degree outside air, water temperature maintained at 180 degrees. Customer service from E-Trailer was excellent!

  • Electric Fan and Shroud Recommendation for a 1952 Chevy 3100 Truck
I think your best option would be the Derale 17 inch High-Output, Electric Radiator Fan w/ Aluminum Shroud # D16816. You will want to check the dimensions to be sure that this will fit behind your radiator, but it has the same size fan as the # D18217 that you referenced plus a shroud.

  • Recommended Radiator Fan for 1950 Chevy Truck
For your 1950 Chevy truck I recommend taking a look at the Derale High-Output Electric Radiator Fan # D16816. This radiator fan features an aluminum shroud and works as a puller unit. The unit has overall dimensions of 16-3/4 inches wide, 17-5/8 inches tall, and 3 inches deep. You will just want to make sure that you have the necessary space to mount the fan behind your radiator. For a higher CFM unit we also have the Derale 26" # D16927. This is a dual electric fan assembly that measures...

  • Solution For 2008 GMC Sierra 1500 5.3L Overheating When Towing 4,000 lb Trailer Up a Grade
If you are pulling a trailer under the towing capacities of your 2008 GMC Sierra 1500, the engine temperature of the truck should not overheat. I would recommend having the vehicle looked over by your GMC dealership. What I would recommend is adding a combination transmission and oil cooler, as well as a cooling fan. This will cool the transmission fluid, the engine oil, and engine. For this, I would recommend the Derale Combination Transmission and Engine Oil Cooler, part # D15903. You...

  • Electric Radiator Fans Compatible With 24 Volt Systems
I reached out to my contact at Derale, and all of the Derale products including the 17" High-Output, Electric Radiator Fan w/ Aluminum Shroud Assembly - 2,400 CFM # D16816, are only compatible with 12V. I do have another option for you. The closest fan we have to what you are looking for is the Flex-a-lite 16" Trimline Reversible Electric Radiator Fan - 24V # FLX11624. Although this is 1 inch smaller, it will work well with a 24V system. You may also be interested in the Mounting Feet...
