Video Transcript for Hopkins Trailer Hitch Level with Cover Review

Today we're going to be taking a look at the Hopkins Trailer Hitch Level with cover. Part number HM09715. The Hopkins Trailer Hitch Level with cover has your leveling needs covered. It features two levels, so you can level your front to back, and side to side. It uses your standard three scale level, with a highly visible green fluid. When your camper is out of level from side to side, as you could see it is there, the numeric scale will tell you by how much.

You simply rotate it until the bubble aligns in the center, and then right there, as you could see, it says two inches. It's notch design allows it to fit right on top of your coupler and around your jack. The included cover is going to help protect against the elements, as well as keep your level's fluid from fading. Now that we've gone over some of the features, I'll go ahead and show you how to get it installed, but first and foremost, we're going to make sure that our trailer is level, front to back, and side to side. Let's go and do that now. To level our trailer, or camper, or whatever else you might be hauling, you want to go ahead and take your carpenter's level and find a straight line.

Now you can go underneath, but I'm going to go right off the top of my trim right here. As you can see, it's slightly out of level, and our camper needs to come down a little bit. What we're going to do is have a buddy run up there, and lower it, and I'll say when, we've got it centered up. Come on down. Keep on going.

Stop for a minute. Perfect. Now with the front to back level, let's go ahead and do our side to side. We've laid our carpenter's level, on our A-frame on the front of our trailer. As you can see, it's slightly out of level, so just like before, we're going to go and have a buddy adjust our stabilizers.

All right, come on down. Almost got it. Perfect. Now that we know our camper's level all the way around, I'll go ahead and show you how it works. We'll go ahead and remove the protective cover off the top, and we're going to place it in this direction on top of our coupler. Now if you look here, you'll notice two mounting locations. The hardware is provided, but for today's demonstration we will be permanently mounting it. Next thing we'll need to do is calibrate it, so let's rotate the dial, toward the hole, that's right above the screw. Then I'll take my small Phillips screwdriver, and then I'm going to adjust that until the bubble is in the middle of the level. Just about got it there. All right that one looks good. Now let's rotate it again, until the hole is aligned up with this screw. Now that first one was our side to side. This is going to be our front to back. All right, and we've got it. Now with everything calibrated, this will be a good time to go ahead and permanently mount it to your coupler. That's going to complete our look at the Hopkins Trailer Hitch Level with cover. Part number HM09715. .

Hard to install and went out of adjustment, but worth it. It just fit between jack and ball lock on my trailer tongue. I should have been more careful, but I broke a bit drilling a pilot hole for a mounting screw. I couldn't relocate so I bought a tungsten bit to drill out the broken bit, but alas the tungsten bit broke too, despite my best efforts. Relocation was not possible so I fabricated and epoxy glued a thin steel plate, with screws coming out, on the tongue. Once mounted and adjusted, it worked great, until it inexplicably went way out of adjustment on a long rough trip across the country. I adjusted it as well as I could on the road, and it was OK. I'll dial it in correctly now that I have a level spot.

This is a great level. I have used them on every camper I have owned. Fast and simple... which is what I need! LOL.

I've had this style trailer hitch level for years and have found it to be most helpful in a quick level up of my RV. It seems that etrailer.com is one of the few places I could find them. So I've ordered this one for my daughter's family as they've just gotten their first RV. I hope they find it as useful as I have.

by:

i like the way it works and easy to use. one of the bubbele lost its liquid so i have to use another level for up and down. it is not my first one witch somehow came apart inside. but overall like the intem.

by:

At first this seemed like just another level until I realized the numbers on the face tell you how many inches are required to level the trailer side to side. You simply turn the dial until the bubble in the level is centered and the dial will tell you how many inches to raise the appropriate side of the trailer.

by:

Great little device to quickly determine how "level" a trailer is and give guidance as to how much wheels need to be raised in order to actually achieve proper level.

by:

Every time I level my trailer, I LOVE this little tool! Without a doubt, one of the best things I have bought that makes my life easier. I instantly know which side is low and how much I need to raise it. Highly recommended!

by:

I had one of these on my last trailer, almost never used another level. Very reliable when installed properly.

by:

Product is as in the write-up. As usual... Service was top notch!

That's why I continue to patronize Etrailer.

The product is working as expected. so much easier than what I was doing prior to purchasing this. If I ever replace my trailer, I will be back for another for the new trailer.

Used it all summer. About 20,000 kms hitching up Every 1 to 3 days. Works great and sure beats all others. Would suggest taking trailer level measures from inside trailer, close to fridge, or middle of floor before adjusting the level itself. Only needs further adjustment every 30 days of travel or so. CAUTION, do not forget the levels cap as rain will ruin the level with humidity and following rust. This is why I had to get this new one to replace the previous one. E-trailer had best price by far, even with shipping fees.

by:

Love this product! I love the level gage and the fact that it does both directions at once.

by:

Excellent product. Very easy to install. And shipping was a lot quicker than we thought it would be. Very grateful for that

by:

Easy to hook up and use, comes with everything you need.

by:

Product seems to be accurate enough. Not really sure if calibration adjustment will stay calibrated Only time will tell.

by:

Hard to find a place to mount, that was level and out of harms way.

by:

Just installed on my new Passport camper, very easy to install and calibrate, quickest setup at a campground ever

by:

First time I have purchased from you. The service was outstanding.

good quality

  • Can Hopkins Trailer Hitch Level be Mounted on Bumper of 5th Wheel
Sure, you can use the Hopkins Trailer Hitch Level with Cover # HM09715 on the bumper of your 5th wheel if you like, though that may not provide the best information in terms of leveling, and there is a much better option for a 5th wheel. Instead of the hitch level I recommend the Wheel Masters Level Master Trailer Bubble Level with 5th Wheel Pin Box Mounting Bracket # WM6780. The Level Master goes on top of your pin box which you can very easily see from your truck so you don't have to...

  • Will Hopkins HM09175 Hitch Level Fit Thumb Latch Coupler
Thanks for sending in a picture of your thumb latch coupler and trailer jack. Based on seeing that we know the Hopkins Trailer Hitch Level with Cover part # HM09715 would fit and work great as we had chance to install this on the exact same coupler as you can see in the attached review video.

  • What Kind Of Drill Bit Should Be Used To Install Hopkins Trailer Hitch Level
You will want to use a cobalt or titanium drill bit when drilling the 5/32-in pilot hole for the # HM09715 hitch level. These type bits are used for harder metal and will do a better job than just a steel or high-speed steel bit as they will dull pretty quickly and are better for softer metals and wood.

  • Weight Distribution for a 2013 Ford Edge and R-Pod Trailer
For the factory-installed hitch receiver on your 2013 Ford Edge, I recommend the Brophy Ball Mount # BM20. It has a 3/4 inch rise and a 2 inch drop with a weight capacity of 10,000 lbs, which should be more than sufficient for your 188 inch R-Pod. You will also need a pin and clip for this mount and I recommend the # PC3. For more information, I have provided a link to our FAQ page on how to choose the correct ball mount. For a weight distribution system with sway control, I recommend...
