The BX1 gooseneck coupler from Bulldog is designed to provide the easiest, most secure hookup possible. The bottom locking plate on this coupler is 50 percent larger than the competition, providing additional surface area to guide the ball into the socket. Miss the target by just over an inch and the coupler will still engage.

Once hookup is complete, use the easy-to-access, easy-to-maneuver handle to lock the coupler to the ball. When the handle is down, you know that everything is secure and it's okay to tow. For extra security you can insert a padlock (sold separately) through the fixed plate.

Once you begin towing, you may notice that there is far less rattle and jarring at the coupled point than you'd experience with a standard gooseneck coupler. This is because the ball pocket on the BX1 provides contact on both sides of the hitch ball, rather than on only one side, which is typical of the competition. The result is a tight fit around the ball that makes for a smoother, quieter and more secure towing experience.

Video Transcript for Bulldog BX1 Gooseneck Coupler Review

Randy: Hey guys its Randy Hurdy, trailer.com. Today we're taking a look at a Gooseneck Coupler from Bulldog. This is the BX1 line. Now this is available as just the coupler insert or also with the outer tube, so you've got good options there. This is the long version, this coupler's gonna work out really well for your two wheeled drive trucks, your lowering trucks, any truck that sits a little bit lower to the ground. Once you get into bigger four wheel drive trucks, big F350's, 3500's or you get into lifted trucks you want to go with a short coupler. Now the latching mechanism here is really unique to this coupler.

It has a position here, it goes in, it locks in that place. We've got our nice, wide, rounded area here to help guide that Gooseneck bolt up an end. Once that's up and end, we just want to pull around the handle and pull rearward and place it in like that. I think this gives us a better grip, so if our trailer is pushed a little further forward, it gives us enough power or enough grip to be able to pull hard enough to get it latched into place there. Now the coupler is going to be serviceable in two locations as well. One's in our pivot handle, we've got a greaser grate down here.

The other's going to be over on our hinge. That keeps everything lubricated nicely and that paired with the already oil impregnated bushings that they use, means we should have years of great service out of this. We're also going to have a hole right here. We can run a lock down through there and that'll prevent anybody from disconnecting the coupler from the ball. Now as far as weight capacities go, there are several available, you just want to ensure that you pick one that matches what your load's going to be and what your trailer's rated for. It's okay to go over.

A Gooseneck that's overbuilt isn't going to necessarily take away from the performance of your trailer, but you certainly wouldn't want to go under your weight rating. The BX1 coupler's in the outer tube are all going to be unfinished when you receive them. This is going to allow you to paint it much more easily to match your trailer and also get it welded on easier, you won't have to grind off any of the old paint. All of the warning labels you can see, they've got a protective cover over them so once you paint it, you can peel that off and all your labels will look really nice. All in all, I really like this coupler, I like the design of the handle. I think that's going to be a little bit easier to use, than some of them that we have available out there. It's going to do a good job, it's going to connect easy with that place.

If I we're putting one on my trailer I think I would go with one that auto-connects, so as you're lowering your trailer down, it automatically latches. That saves you having to get up in the back of the truck but you've got to remember you've got safety chains and wiring that you still have to connect, so if you're going to be in the truck for that anyway, this would be a great way to connect your trailer to your truck. Now your installation process, of course that's going to depend on whether you're getting the outer tube with your coupler or not. If you are getting the outer tube, let's take a look at the front of the trailer here. This is going to be replaced whether you've damaged it, maybe the weld's have broke loose, whatever the situation is, or maybe you're building a new trailer, this is going to added on right to the front. You can see these are usually about the same size, about 20 inches or so outer tube diameter. This one happens to have two set bolts rather than the one that we more typically see, just a little bit more security. Well that's going to be welded on here and placed on so you can then add your coupler into it, paint it down and get it secure. The one thing we highly recommend, the tops on all these are always open, so what we recommend, just like they do in a factory set-up like what we've got here, you're going to weld on a steel plate, you want to cap that off, that prevents moisture from getting down in there, causing the outer tube and the inner tube to rust together. And once our outer tube is set, we'll bring our coupler, just slide that up and in and we'll slide our pin through. The pin's going to be provided. I like having that, this gives us a new fresh set to slide through. Now the bottom of your coupler as you set it, we've got four holes there to pick from so it gives us the eight inches of adjustment. You want the bottom side of the coupler here to most closely match what you had, or if you're trying to level your truck, or if you could just put on a new outer tube, you want to position this so that your trailer sits nice and level when couple.Next we'll have our set bolt, that needs to be run down to where it makes contact with our coupler, then we'll need to torque that down properly. Once that's done, we can get a little jam nut here and run that jam nut down, both of these are going to use an inch and an eighth wrench. That's most typical. So we're going to apply a little bit of torque to that, that'll prevent this bold from loosing up. At that point our coupler's going to be ready for use. That's going to complete our look at the BX1 line from Bulldog.

Perfect fit in the old receiver tube and the lower profile will allow me to level the trailer.

by:

All the reviews said this is good for higher vehicles, to level a load. The distance from bottom hole to gooseneck is 10.5 inches, exact same hight of the coupler that came standard on my trailer. The raw finish comes with a nice coat of rust on it, so be prepared to clean all that up as well.

by:

Exactly what we were looking for in an adjustable coupler. Great quality and a great price. Prompt shipment as well. Thank you!

by:

This seems to be a great product, easy to install and even easier to use. Great Customer Service and prompt response to all questions.

I had a fixed neck on my 32' cattle trailer and with the newer trucks the ball sits so high that my front axle on the trailer was barely touching the ground. After replacing the fixed hitch with the bx1 my trailer rides level. It does exactly what I was hoping it would do!! GREAT PRODUCT!!!

by:

Great, well built product and support. I had several questions about this product and someone from their technical support team promptly responded multiple times until all of my questions had been answered.

By far the best bang for the $$$. It would have been nice if it had come pre-painted or at least primed but the decals had peel off covers so you could simply paint it the color of your choice and then peel off the covers and it looks great.

Very well built and sturdy product. Can't ask for more.

Honestly i feel short changed the welds should really be 100% across regardless of whether necessary or not. Some oil so it didnt rust during shipping would of also been appreciated but again not end of the world. The welds appear to be robotic if they're by hand they did an awesome job.of what was done but again, for the time to finish the seams wouldnt of been a real big deal on the production side, but i sure do appreciate the capacity its rated and i plan on using it to its fullest. Thanks again

by:

My f800 Ford has a tall hitch height . This allowed me the extra distance I needed to tow my trailer . Very low profile .

by:

Julie at etrailer got me just what we needed and got it here in time for the move! We were replacing an older goose neck coupler that had become damaged. Although a original replacement wasn’t available Julie found a newer model that would fit and worked out perfect! Super easy to hook up the trailer with this new BX1 coupler!!
Thanks!!

by:

Excellent product and service. I replaced the hitch on my 36 ft PJ due to hole ripping out. I made a modification to the hitch to reinforce the hole as shown in pictures.

by:

I ordered the bulldog bx1at 9:30pm and it was on my porch 3 days later. Absolutely amazing turn around time. Installed it the next day on a trailer project with no issues with the product at all. I will order from etrailer from now on.
Great product and easy one handed operation.

by:

The insert came, shipping was fast and packaging excellent, but here's the rub, it will not fit into the sleeve. It looks just like the one that slip out and the hitch part looks super, but it is probably a sixteenth in circumference too large. Will not fit into the sleeve without lot of grinding. Grrrrr!

by:

The coupler was on back order for a little over a year, I understand that it was out of etrailer’s hands due to supply issues. The other slight problem was that I would have thought that the industry should have a standard, my trailer hitch is 4” square tube ghe coupler came and would not fit I had to mill ir to fit. etrailer people were nice and cooperative in checking on the order and offering other options but I told them I would wait on the one I ordered.

by:

Thank you fast the super fast service!!

by:

I bought a dump trailer that had a 5th coupler on it. Switch to a gooseneck for the weight capacity and this has been a great coupler. Easy to use and holds tight. Pulled a lot of weight with it with no problems or damage. Would buy again if I needed one.

by:

I replaced my old bulldog coupler with the newer BX1 coupler, it's so much nicer and easier to lock/unlock. I've not actually used it yet, I did locked the ball in the coupler on my original and the BX1 to compare and it was a much tighter fit. I can tell I'm going to love it - can't wait to pull my bobcat, I'm sure it's going to be a smooth ride.

by:

It does the job

by:

Ever since our first purchase from each etrailer, it's always been a great experience, we always have notification and updates on our products definitely will recommend etrailer.

I bought a 2017 Ford F250 which was higher than my 2011. I replaced a different bulldog hitch with this on my cattle trailer and was able to get more adjustment to completely level my trailer. I actually only used the insert. I really like the lock! The cupped design also makes it easy to go on the ball. I got a great product at a great price! Thanks guys!
