Replacement Inner Gooseneck Trailer Coupler Tube that Doesnt Use Load Bearing Pins

Question:

Bulldog BX1 Gooseneck Coupler Recommendation to Replace a Bulldog Hammerblow Coupler Question: I have a Featherlite 2 horse straight load trailer with a Bulldog Hammerblow 20,000 coupler. I am looking to replace the Hammerblow with a BX1 coupler. I have noticed lthat all of the BX1 couplers that I am looking at have a load bearing pin. My trailer does not have a load bearing pin, so I do not have a hole in the outer tube for a load bearing pin. Do I have to have a hole for a load bearing pin to use the BX1 coupler or is there a BX1 model that does not require a load bearing pin. My trailer has two set screws. Thank you for your help asked by: Casey J Expert Reply: What you are going to need for your trailer is the BX1 Bulldog Gooseneck Coupler part # BD1289030300 since this comes with an outer tube. The part # BD1289170300 is an inner tube only and would only work for you if you had an outer tube on your trailer with a load bearing pin like you said you dont have. expert reply by: Jameson C This didnt answer the customers question at all so it was no help to me. How would buying the hitch with the outer tube help aside from cutting the existing tube off and welding the new one on? I mean, at that point, the benefit of buying the BX1 would be completely diminished. I want to know if I can modify the existing outer tube so that the load bearing pin on the BX1 could be used. If a modification is possible, what would be the best way to pattern the holes in the existing outer tube? If that is not possible, can the load bearing pin be ed below the existing outer tube to provide a load bearing surface provided that the set screws were tightened to the proper torque spec?

As far as an inner tube only, the BX1 coupler # BD1289170300 is the only option. It sounds like you need one that is held in the outer tube with set screws such as # CG or # BD0287690300.

Coupler # CG has a 4 inch diameter tube and # BD0287690300 has a 4-1/2 inch tube.

The other option is to replace both the outer and inner tube with # BD1289040300, # BD1289030300, # BD1289000300, # BD1289080300, # BD1289070300, or # BD1289140300. These are all BX1 couplers for 2-5/16 inch balls and have an inner and outer tube.
