Ryan: Hey everybody, Ryan here at etrailer. Today we're going to be taking a look at and showing you how to install the Bulldog Square Tube Trailer Coupler. So the trailer coupler is a really important piece of equipment. You're going to want to make sure it's solid and something that you're going to be able to rely on, especially considering this is going to be the main connection point, that's actually holding our truck and trailer together.Here I'm holding our old coupler next to the new one, just to give you a comparison. There's a couple of different reasons why you would want to replace just your inner tube. For example, if you look at our old one here, you can see it's really worn out.

There's a ton of surface rust here, and that can make it extremely difficult to adjust. Sometimes these can almost kind of freeze up inside of there and more importantly, the holes where the pin would go through are elongated, so they're kind of inaudible 00:00:59 out. That's going to allow this to have a ton of play and slop in it and that's what you don't want. You want everything to be nice and tight and reliable.Also, a lot of times the mechanism here and your handle can lock up on you, make it really difficult to operate. So really just over time, these things get weathered and worn out and it's good to replace them because if you think about it, this is a really critical component, that's actually pairing our trailer to our truck.

And that's where this Bulldog coupler is really going to come into play.Extremely heavy-duty and this is something you know you're going to be able to count on. Just by taking a quick look at it, you can tell it means business, super thick, heavy-duty, made from all steel. We even had a customer say they made it through a few hurricanes with this and it still functions like it did on day one and I could see how that's possible. Really a simple coupler, that's one of the things I like about it. You don't have a ton of different bells and whistles and things to go wrong, the simplicity.

You know it's going to function the way it should and you know it's going to do that for a long time.So the way it's going to work, really simple, our handle here is going to determine if this is locked or unlocked. Right now it's in that closed or locked position. Whenever we're hooked up to our trailer, this is how it's going to be pointed, down the road. So it's going to fit in there nice and tight. You won't have to worry about a lot of jarring and things of that nature.

Whenever you're ready to drop your trailer or hook up to it even, all your going to have to do, is grab this big handle, pull up, rotate it, it'll lock it into place. That way, when you get lined up with your ball, you can put it back into that lock position. So it's a spring loaded, it's going to take a lot of force to open it, not so much that it's unmanageable, but this isn't accidentally coming undone, more or less what I'm trying to say. The handle's nice and big so even in that cold icy weather, you got a big old pair of gloves on, you're able to grab it easily and operate it.What's cool too, is there's going to be a couple little holes here. So what you could do is put a padlock there or something, and that's going to stop people from being able to undo your trailer. If you're really not worried about security, as far as theft and things of that nature goes, you could always take a pin or bolt or something even, run it through there and that's just going to give you a little bit of extra security, knowing that for whatever reason, if this does happen to come off, it's not going to disconnect, that pin is going to stop it. So nice just to have the extra anti-theft and safety feature available.This coupler is going to work with a few inaudible 00:04:02 balls that are two and 5/16 inaudible 00:04:05 inch, and it's going to have a 25,000 pound maximum weight capacity, so pretty high number there. But at the end of the day, coupler you really can't go wrong with, if you need to replace yours, this has got to be a perfect choice. Not all these bells and whistles, really heavy duty, you know it's going to work and last you for a long time.So if you take a look at our new coupler, right away you're going to be able to tell, super heavy duty and it's going to be extremely reliable. The steel is very thick, very strong, and it's going to have a four inch by four inch size two. So really common size and should work well with a ton of different applications. It's going to be pretty much direct replacement for the most part. If you look on the side, we're going to have four holes here and that's going to allow us to adjust either up or down to best match up with our truck. But other than that, everything's relatively straightforward. So let's go ahead and get this installed. And just a quick tech tip before we put this in, it's going to arrive like this just bare metal.So I would highly recommend maybe getting some spray paint and putting a nice layer of paint on this, just to help prevent any of that surface rust that can accumulate. It's going to help keep it in better shape for a little bit longer and make it look a little bit better too. I will say, might not be a bad idea even to take some anti-seize and maybe apply it on the sides too, after you paint it, that'll just help this from seizing up, it'll help keep it a little lubricated. But with that being said, let's go ahead and pop this in.So we're going to take our coupler here, line it up with the existing housing and push it up into place. So once we get our coupler inside of her housing and we lined up the pin that we want to use to set that proper height, what we're going to do is take the included bolt. And I'm actually using an additional washer just to help cover up that little bit larger hole that was originally there. You can pick these up at your local hardware store. We'll just pass that through, then on the other side of the bolt, I am going to secure it using another one of those flat washers and the included lock nut. So just get this hand tight for now. Then I can come back and snug it down. And be sure to torque down the hardware, according to the manufacturer specifications. So once it's torqued down, you're ready to hook your trailer up to your truck and try it out.
