Installation

This custom-fit T-connector plugs into your vehicle's wiring harness, which is located behind the driver's-side and passenger's-side tail lights. You will have to remove the tail light assemblies to access this harness. Once you've plugged in the T-connector, run the hot lead to your car battery. Connect the lead to the included fuse holder, and then connect the fuse holder to the positive terminal on your battery.

Once installation is complete, the 4-way connector will be stowed in an out-of-the-way location within your rear cargo area.

It is recommended that you use a small amount of grease on all electrical connections - the plugs on your automobile and the 4-pole connector itself - to help prevent corrosion.

Powered Tail Light Converter with Surface-Mount Technology

A tail light converter is built into this T-connector. This converter is a circuit-protected, battery-powered unit that bypasses the electrical routes that are used by a basic wiring harness. As a result, there is virtually no draw on your tail light circuits.

Because most trailers run on a two-wire system - wherein the brake and turn signals are carried on one wire - the separate brake and turn signals from your vehicle's three-wire system need to be combined so they are compatible with the wiring system of the trailer. This converter combines the brake and turn signal functions of your automobile so that they run on one wire to properly activate your trailer's tail lights. Note: This will not affect how the tail lights on your vehicle operate.

Curt builds each tail light converter using surface-mount technology (SMT). This method of construction involves soldering electronic components directly to the surface of a printed circuit board. SMT eliminates the need for leads, which are used in older through-hole technology. The result is a circuit board that is smaller yet provides more routing area and that offers superior performance, reliability and durability.

Curt SMT Circuit Boards

Circuit boards constructed using SMT have been shown to perform better under rough conditions with excessive vibration than those made using the through-hole method. And where would vibration be more likely to occur than in towing applications? Curt converters also produce less heat, leading to increased durability and longer life. In addition, lower levels of resistance ensure better performance, especially for parts that operate at higher frequencies.

Each Curt circuit board is made using high-quality components that are pieced together in the most technologically savvy fashion, leading to greater predictability and reliability in functioning.

I’m happy with the trailer hitch and the trailer wiring.

by:
2012 Jeep Liberty

very happy with the packaging. The hitch arrived in just a couple days even with the free shipping my son and I installed the hitch the next day this past Saturday.as advertised once the pesky existing nut was removed from our Jeep, the hitch install was easy.

by:

This is the third wiring harness I have bought they are very easy to install.I like to add a layer of electrical tape over all the wires to add one more layer.I travel a lot of gravel and winter roads. Mike

2012 Jeep Liberty

Amazingly easy to install. Hardest part was running the wire to the battery. Everything else was simple plug in. Also, extremely fast shipping and courtesy follow through via emails from customer service representative! Thank you!
Didn't take pictures during install so only finished plug next to my hitch!

everything i order fronm etrailer has been great

I bought a class 3 hitch for my Jeep Liberty. It went on with no problem due to the hitch and mounting hardware. I suggest that you follow the instructions and thoroughly clean the threads or you will have problems.

by:

Installation was pretty straightforward after watching a couple of YouTube videos. The wiring system works flawlessly. Also, having a second pair of eyes/hands is very helpful and makes the process faster. My only watch out is to be careful you don't accidentally disconnect anything in the engine bay by mistake while reaching for the wires. Take pictures and double-check everything.

by:

As advertised. Harness only took about 45 minutes to install but the power line was another story. Exhaust lines, drive shafts, steering column, etc., caused the power line to take about 2 hours to route and secure with wire ties. Works great though.

works great! I use it 2 or 3 times per week.

by:

The wiring harness was a easy to install. The written instructions weren't real clear, but the video on the etrailer website was right on and a great help.

We have been very happy with our Curt Trailer Hitch receiver for our 2010 Jeep. etrailer was great to work with. Shipping was fast, installation easy. Now looking at a tow bar package from etrailer for our RV!

by:

I first looked at etrailer because of the price but I chose to purchase from etrailer because of the helpful "how to" videos. Wiring harness seemed too difficult until I watched the video. Mounting the hitch and installing the wiring was as easy as can be. Product seems to be quality made, very solid and welds look good. The paint finish even still looks good after a year. I work for a truck parts supply company and I have been recommending etrailer to all of my customers, co-workers and friends & family since my purchase.

2 day shipping for free Chicago city ,Very easy to install !!! 30 minutes plus wiring connections maybe a hour.

by:

Ordering was easy.
Recueved the product
in a few days.
Very easy to install, works perfect.

Have not installed this yet but should be no problem since I have a fuse block at the rear of the Liberty for the power to the module.

2012 Jeep Liberty

I haven't used it yet, but the connector tested out fine. I wish the kit included the air tubing they used in the instructional video, or something to fish the wire through the framing. I spent a few hours looking for and trouble shooting something that would do the trick. After picking up electrical fish tape from a local hardware store, the dang thing still wouldn't go all the way through like the video. I wonder if my 2012 Liberty is structured differently than the 2008 in the video. I gave up on trying to run the hot wire like the video, and just routed it under the Jeep as best as I could. Hooking up everything else really was pretty simple. When testing the connector with a test light (I don't own a trailer), make sure your trucks' lights are ON to test the first terminal and then blinkers for the other two. Don't be like me and think that your connections are bad and spend a while testing everything when all you have to do is turn your lights and blinkers on (being in a hurry didn't help this stupid mistake). Other than running the wire under the car, this kit is easy to install.

The wiring harness has worked great for the past year. It had all the parts necessary for installation and was shipped quickly. I could not have asked for better service or product.

Has done very well. Thanks

by:
2002 Dodge Durango

the problem is that the sidemarker lights on the tail light stays light even when the vehicle is turned off . my brake lights don't even go on when the vehicle is turned off ...so I have to make sure I unplug the trailer even when its still on the hitch .. . the connectors are good, the minimal wires are good to stuff behind the vehicle tail light... not to bulky

by:
2008 Jeep Liberty

It has been a number of years since I wired a car for a trailer, so I purchased this kit since it has T connectors that make the wiring a no brainer. The video on the wire routing was VERY VERY VERY helpful. Thank you for easier installation than it could have been. Jeep 2008 Liberty

by:
2012 Jeep Liberty

I have been using this product for over a year now and it still works great. I installed this on my 2012 Jeep Liberty and opted to run all of the wiring under the wheel well panels. I use this harness weekly and it has had zero issues. Highly recommended.

by:
2011 Jeep Liberty

Everything went together pretty good..the connectors that come with the kit aren't great but they work..overall nice kit..I chose to run my power wire in through the driver side taillight grommet and down the side of the vehicle under the panels instead of under the car through the frame rail

by:
2008 Jeep Liberty

Excellent! Fit my Jeep Liberty connectors perfectly, and super easy to install (assuming you can run the heavy 12V wire from the battery to this module). Compact enough to easily hide behind the tail light assembly. etrailer delivered on time and as expected.

2012 Jeep Liberty

Very happy with my hitch purchased through etrailer. Shipped very fast shipping and all parts and accessories came as described. Thank you for your service. I would definitely buy through you guys again and recommend you to family and friends in the future.

by:
2011 Jeep Liberty

There is a difference between product excellence in design, and the ability of the installer. The longest (and for me most frustrating aspect) part of the installation was running the unit power wire from the rear of my vehicle to the battery in the engine compartment. I should add that I'm anal retentive when it comes to wanting anything I install on one of my vehicles to look "factory."

The kit was excellent, well thought out, and very well supported by both printed and online video installation instructions. Everything necessary was supplied, zip ties, double-sided mounting tape for adhering the power unit to the vehicle, even the self-tapping sheet metal screw for providing ground to the power unit, and butt-connectors for splicing the wires where required.! etrailer didn't miss a trick and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend their product(s) to anyone.

by:
2012 Jeep Liberty

The video as always is a great help. It took longer than I had hoped for install. Also I found they were a little stingy with the green wire that goes to the passenger side. I would have gladly paid a little more for just a couple of more inches of wire as it was extremely tight when putting the passenger side light assembly back together. That said it seems to wrok fine.

  • Troubleshooting Trailer Lights Not Working When Headlights are Turned On
Thanks for the purchase of the Curt T-Connector Vehicle Wiring Harness # C56334 for your 2012 Jeep Liberty and from how you phrased "the only thing that works on the trailer are the running lights when my headlights are on" and the fact that you mentioned changing ground locations, it seems like the trailer lights work normally except when your headlights are on.
