Installation

This custom-fit T-connector plugs into your vehicle's wiring harness, which is located beneath the rear of your vehicle, in the center just behind the spare tire. After plugging in the connector, route the 7-way end of the harness along the inside of your bumper toward the center of your vehicle.

Once installation is complete, the 7-way connector will be stowed beneath your vehicle, near the trailer hitch. Use a mounting bracket (18138 - sold separately) to keep the connector secure. Note: Drilling may be required.

It is recommended that you use a small amount of grease on all electrical connections - the plug on your automobile and the 7-pole connector itself - to help prevent corrosion.

Harness plugged right in. Zip ties included were to small to use. It would have been nice to have bolts included to attach to the bracket.

It can’t be any easier unless you get somebody else to do it for you. I’m 63 wasn’t in any hurry and it took about an hour and a half 4 bolts off and 5 bolts on plug in your wiring and good to go. The video is pretty clear what to do.
I would definitely recommend this product for any one who needs a hitch on their suv mine is a 2014 Ford Explorer everything fit like a glove going to pull my boat with mine. Very happy with the products from etrailer.

Product shipped quickly undamaged. Wiring instructions did not match exactly with my 2012 Ford explores lights. I had to test and then re-wire to the 7 way plug

Still working good

by:
2015 Ford Explorer

The item itself is excellent my lower review is due to the faulty wiring instructions supplied. the connector was stamped with one wiring scheme and the instructions had another. I wired it per instructions and things did light up correctly, I wired it per the stamped colors on the connector and things work as they should. Differences are Connector 3-green, 5-red, 6-brown, yellow unknown. Instructions 3-brown,5-yellow and 6-green, red unknown. I am still uncomfortable about the red wire on 5 and yellow wire in the center but the left turn and brakes work. I don't have reverse lights on trailer so don't know about yellow in center.

by:
2014 Ford Explorer

There was confusion between the written instructions and the color coded designations on the back side of the plug, which to un-due rework to get the connector properly wired. The written instructions included in the kit were in error in identifying the proper wire color to terminal number. The "T-Connector" however work excellent. The harness quality was very good, and the 7-pin connector was just average in quality.

by:

Connectirs were a perfect match. Kit should include nuts and bolts to attatch 7way to tow hitch. Its been a year. Mine is still attatched with zip ties

by:

All information on website was correct. I got the correct part on the date they promised delivery. It’s been install and works great. Your online videos were big help in getting best wiring harness for the job.

by:

I got great service with a great product, very easy to install with provided instructions.

by:

Good quality, make sure you also buy a mounting bracket. I forgot mine!

See what our Experts say about this CURT Custom Fit Vehicle Wiring

  • Towing Capacity of 2011 Ford Explorer
Your dealer would be able to confirm if your Explorer is equipped with the tow package by running the VIN, the online VIN decoders I have access to aren't detailed enough to indicate whether your Explorer was equipped with the factory tow package. In terms of the wiring for a brake controller or a trailer wiring harness like the part # C56278 you'd looked at, the vehicle should be prewired for both, so it doesn't matter whether or not you have the tow package for either to be a plug and...

  • Trailer Wiring Harness for a 2015 Ford Explorer that Plugs In without Hardwiring
Trailer wiring harness # C56278 is designed to fit models of the 2015 Ford Explorer that came with the factory connectors under the vehicle to plug in a wiring harness. If your model did not come with them then it cannot be installed. With or without the factory tow package (but with the connectors for it to plug into) the harness still plugs into the same place on the vehicle but if the wiring on the vehicle is not set up for the missing functions then you should only have the basic lighting...

  • Recommended Curt Class III Trailer Hitch Replacement Hardware Kit for a 2014 Ford Explorer
You can certainly pick up the hardware only for your hitch. You will use the replacement hardware kit for trailer hitches # RHK. Just enter your Hitch # C13386 on the # RHK product page and the hardware that you need for your 2014 Ford Explorer will be shipped promptly. I have attached an installation video as well. If you plan on towing, you'll want to grab a wiring harness and ball mount set-up. For a vehicle without a tow package use wiring harness # C56172 or install # C56278 if...

  • Will Tow Ready Trailer Wiring harness C56278 Fit a 2013 Ford Explorer without Factory Tow Package

  • 7-Way and 4-Way Trailer Connection Recommendation for 2013 Ford Explorer
If your 2013 Ford Explorer has the trailer wiring (it should) it would be located under the passenger side rear fender. If you check out the install video I attached you can see our installer point it out at the 16 second mark. To install a 7-way you would want the part # C56278. This will require you to wire everything to the pins of the connector. Or you could wire everything to the part # HM40975-11998 instead and have the 7-way and 4-way you wanted. You will have to use butt connectors...

  • Trailer Wiring Harness Fits for 2014 and 2015 Ford Explorers
Yes, all of the trailer wiring harness products that we offer for the 2014 Ford Explorer are the same as those called for on the 2015 model year. I have linked for you the pages for both vehicles' wiring harness products. For examples, part # C56172 has a 4-pole flat type connector and part # C56278 is a 7-way type.

  • 7-Way Wiring for 2011 Ford Explorer Limited Without Factory Tow Package
Sometime auto makers include certain features, like tow wiring connectors, even on vehicles that do not have the tow package. The term's exact meaning varies by auto maker, car model and even by year. If your Explorer has the mating rectangular connectors to join those on # C56278 then all you may need to do is install some fuses and/or relays in the power box under the hood. It all depends on how the car was equipped at the factory. If you check under the car and instead find a round...

  • Which 7 Way Trailer Wiring Harness for a 2015 Ford Explorer
There are often two different harnesses at the back of the 2015 Ford Explorer and it looks like you just have the incorrect one; occasionally they're in slightly different spots but there will only be 1 plug to install trailer wiring on a 2015 Explorer and there's not an alternate plug for vehicles with backup sensors. With that said, if you're looking for a 7 way connector I recommend using the Curt T-Connector Vehicle Wiring Harness with 7-Way Trailer Connector # C56278. This harness...

I checked with Tow Ready and wiring harness # C56278 is listed as a fit for all styles of the 2013 Ford Explorer including ones that do not have the factory tow package. The connector you found is half of what would be needed to plug into this harness. It is possible that the other connector that would normally plug into the one you found is more hidden. • What's Needed for Towing a Travel Trailer with a 2014 Ford Explorer
We have everything that you need. First off will be the Vehicle Wiring Harness with 7-Way # C56278. This will give you the 7-way plug the travel trailer requires. Secondly I recommend the Curt Echo Wireless Trailer Brake Controller # C51180. This brake controller makes it very simple for you to plug into the 7-way and then will link to your smart phone. • Recommended Trailer Hitch, Weight Distribution System, and Brake Controller 2014 Ford Explorer
First let's start with a trailer hitch. The most popular option we carry is the Curt part # C13386. I attached a install video link. For wiring you would want the # C56278 to add a 7-way to your vehicle since you mentioned that your vehicle has the factory tow package. The best way to pick out a weight distribution system is to base it off of the loaded tongue weight of the setup when it is loaded and ready to tow. This figure also includes the weight of any cargo behind the rear axle...

We are going to begin a process of elimination to solve this problem, starting by checking the 7-way functions. Start by using a circuit tester such as # PTW2992, to test the individual outputs from vehicle's 7-way just to make sure they are all working as intended. If that proves to be an issue, we know the problem is on the Explorer's side, if not, we can narrow it down to the issue being on the trailer. You mentioned that you checked the ground on the Curt # C56278 harness, but be sure...

  • Difference Between The Curt C56278 And C56306 For A 2015 Ford Explorer
There is very little difference between the Curt # C56278 and the # C56306. Even the instruction manuals that they come with are identical. The only difference I noted is that the # C56278 is listed for 2011-2015 Ford Explorer, and the # C56306 is listed for 2011-2019 Ford Explorer. So the C56278 would have been the first model that Curt made, then the # C56306 cam along after. Other than that they are identical even down to the wire length and color.

With just the one connector you referenced, the Curt T-Connector Vehicle Wiring Harness with 7-Way Trailer Connector # C56278 or the # C56306 will work well. I've attached a video that shows this installation with just the single connector to assist. So to install a 7-way all you would need is the part # C56278.

On some vehicles, there are two identical connectors. If this is the case, use the black, not the gray connector. We installed a similar harness, the Tekonsha T-One # 118540, on a 2014 Ford Explorer and found that there are 2 connectors on the passenger side at the rear but you only use one.
