Hey everybody. I'm Ellen here etrailer.com and we're taking a quick look at the GSI Outdoors mess kit. This is going to be a table set with cutlery, and this is a really smart way to have your entire cutlery and table set in one unit. Really environmentally friendly, rather than having to use plastic, or styrofoam, or paper plates when you go on a picnic or when you go camping. You'll be able to have this set, reuse, and wash as many times as you need to. And if they end up wearing out, to the point where you don't really want to use them anymore, you can always recycle them.

So they're going to be again, much more environmentally friendly option and just a really nice, fun way to pack everything you need for those trips. So let's take a look at what you get inside.Everything comes with this mesh bag. Makes it really easy to put stuff away, even if it's not completely dry, since it has all those holes. You never have to worry about things getting mildewy or anything like that by sitting in this bag, since there's going to be plenty of air flow going in there. So, setting that off to the side.

You'll get a cup, a bowl, and a plate, along with your knife, fork and spoon. Now these are tethered together with a little ring, pretty easy to separate them. Just got this little end, and if you just kind of get in there with your thumbnail or something like that, and you can pry those parts, or sides apart and release that. So you can use each of those individually.These feel pretty nice in the hand. They're nice wide size, so they don't feel too chintzy or flimsy.

I like that the spoon is really nice and wide because anytime you're ever eating soup, or especially chili, something that's kind of nice and hardy and thick. I like having a nice wide spoon there. Just so you have plenty of stuff that you can scoop up.The knife seems to do pretty well also. It's not too flimsy. So even if you're cutting through something a little bit tougher, like some chicken or even steak, I think you'd probably do pretty well.

Hopefully your steak isn't too tough, but I think it should probably still be able to get through there.The plate has a nice raised lip around it. So even if you are again, going to be having something that's a little bit thicker, like a stew or a rice dish or something like that. If it's a little bit runny, it doesn't matter. It's not going to slip off the edge of the plate. But you also have a bowl, but maybe you want a bigger portion, whatever the case might be.I also liked that the cup does have measurements on the inside. So they're kind of hard to see on camera for you, but they are printed in or embossed into the material. So at the very top, it's a cup and a half, and then it goes down in, it looks like quarter of a cup increments, because the next little hash is a cup and a quarter, a cup, and so on.Now these are not recommended to use in the microwave, but I have seen some folks say that they have these for years and they have put them in the microwave. The risk there is that they're going to prematurely wear. It might damage them, so that's just something to keep in mind. They are dishwasher safe in the top rack. I believe that's true for all of them. Yeah. They all have the same marking of dishwasher safe in the top rack. So they should be fine there.They are BPA free. So you don't have to worry about any kind of contaminants. And that's the same for the cutlery as well. No markings on there about whether or not they are dishwasher safe, but I would think that they would probably be the same as the plates and things there. Of course, you're not going to really use these in the microwave, so that's no worry. And again, once you're done with them, you can recycle them. So you don't have to worry about leaving a big carbon footprint with these.I think these make a really great replacement for your typical, you know, styrofoam or paper plates. I've seen some folks who have gotten these for their office to have everybody have their own set of cutlery and plates, so that you never need to use disposable stuff. And it just makes a really good addition to any kit.Also great for picnics. Again, just eliminate waste as much as you can. And that mesh bag makes it nice and easy to transport. There's a little loop on there, so if you want to put it somewhere outside your pack or hang it from a spot to let it dry outside the tent, makes it pretty easy to do that.And that's pretty much it for our look at this mess kit.
