Note: Because this actuator does not include a reverse lockout, it is recommended that you equip your trailer with free-backing brakes so that you can drive in reverse without the actuator triggering your trailer's brakes.
When you apply the brakes in your tow vehicle, deceleration occurs and momentum pushes your trailer toward the rear of your vehicle. With surge brake systems, the hydraulic actuator is triggered as your trailer moves forward, once your tow vehicle starts to slow down. When this happens, the actuator contracts, applying force to its master cylinder. This in turn supplies the necessary hydraulic pressure to engage your trailer's brakes.
Adjustable Channel Design
The adjustable channel on this trailer brake actuator allows for ultimate versatility. Mount almost any type of coupler (sold separately) - from a standard ball coupler to a lunette ring or clevis attachment - to fit your specific application. In addition, the 3 mounting positions on the channel let you adjust the height of the coupler. Just place the coupler so that it matches the height of the ball mount or other hitch attachment on your tow vehicle and you will be able to tow your trailer levelly.
This actuator is great for tall trailers. This is because the adjustable channel is positioned so that the mounted coupler can sit below the actuator tube, allowing for a greater drop than with a standard center-mounted channel. As a result, you can line up your tall trailer with your tow vehicle's hitch for a level setup.

Speaker 1: Today we're going to take a look at the Demco weld-on hydraulic drum brake A-frame trailer brake actuator with the adjustable channel down design and a 20,000 pound weight capacity. Now this hydraulic actuator activates your trailer brakes when your tow vehicle slows or stops. Basically when you apply the brakes in your tow vehicle deceleration occurs and the momentum will put your trailer toward the rear of your vehicle and with surge brake systems, this actuator is triggered as your trailer moves forward once your tow vehicle starts to slow down. And when this happens, the actuator will contract and it applied force to the master cylinder back here and this in turn supplies the necessary hydraulic pressure to engage your trailer brakes. Now this does use the composite master cylinder in the back here. It's very durable and efficient. It's a glass reinforced nylon construction, helps resist rush and corrosion.
Has a very large reservoir to provide an increased capacity for the brake fluid and if you notice on the top of the actuator, uses an automotive style diaphragm cap which will complete a completely enclosed system to help prevent contamination of the brake fluid. On the inside of this actuator, they use an acetyl copolymer lining, provides a nice smooth operation as this actuator telescopes in and out. This one uses an adjustable channel, has three different mounting positions for the coupler that you use. Now the coupler that goes in this is sold separately. And it is a channel down design so it allows for a great drop. The breakaway is included if you notice the cable with the stamp hook on the end.
This ensures a secure connection for your breakaway lever. Basically your breakaway cable, this will connect to your tow vehicle and in the case if your trailer comes detached from your tow vehicle, it'll pull this cable which will activate the lever and apply the brakes on a runaway trailer. Now this is a heavy duty steel construction, does use a prying finish on it. It is a weld on installation. And this is designed to mount on a 50 degree A-frame trailer. This part is made in the USA, and again the gross towing weight capacity is 20,000 pounds.
Maximum towing weight capacity is 2000 pounds. The application, again, is 50 degree A-frame trailers with hydraulic drum brakes. Now on the adjustable channel, the width of it which is measured inside the insides is going to be right at three inches, the height on it from the very bottom to the top is right at eight inches, and as I mentioned, it's a channel down design and this actuator also goes by the model number of DA 20. But that should do it for the review on the Demco weld-on hydraulic drum brake A-frame trailer brake actuator the adjustable channel design and a 20,000 pound weight capacity.
