Troubleshooting Open Ground Error Code for Brake Controller Install

Question:

I have a 2001 Chevy Silverado that has had a controller installed for years and works great. I installed it using the factory brake controller wiring harness 3025-P. Lately I have been experiencing an open ground error. This error occurs both when a trailer is installed and when one is not installed. I swapped out the controller with a spare I have and both units experience the same error. Is there a service bulletin or some documentation that you can provide that can point me to the chassis ground I need to check?

The "open ground" error code of a brake controller indicates that the controller is losing the ground connection to the vehicle battery which is the white wire. I'd double check you have the # 3025-P seated totally in the junction box as well as make sure there's not damage to the connector or the pins of it. Also check for corrosion and fix as needed. As far as tracking down the ground circuit on the truck wiring that might be challenging. An easier solution would be to run a jumper wire from the white wire of the controller wiring to the negative post of the battery which will bypass the factory wiring and ensure you get a solid ground.
