Video Transcript for Surco Safari Rooftop Cargo Basket Spare Tire Carrier Review and Installation

Hi everyone. Adam with etrailer.com. Today we're going to be taking a look at the Surco spare tire holder for your Safari rack. So this is going to be a really cool addition to your Safari rack and you can do a couple of different things. One use that I thought of, a lot of times when you have a spare tire it is underneath the back end of your vehicle. If you're going off roading or anything like that, the more ground clearance, the better. So to be able to put this up onto your Safari rack might be a plus. Also, it's not always a bad idea to have two spare tires if something else goes awry multiple times when you're on the road, you'll have an extra spare as well.

And on top of that it looks pretty cool.So some of you guys are wondering if this is actually going to hold it down and stay on our rack. So the way that they designed this wing nut here is as you tighten it down, we have a little chain on this bracket and what that's going to do as it loosens, that chain is going to get a grip on that wing nut and prevent it from coming out anymore. So you don't have to worry about your spare tire going anywhere. Another thing is it's not really too noticeable and it has the same type of powder coated finish that comes with our Safari rack. So it doesn't really stand out.And another thing that you could do, it doesn't come with the spare tire carrier, but we could actually get a padlock and lock this chain and the wing nut together just so it won't go anywhere.

Even if someone tried to steal your spare tire.So this is one of the many attachments that we can put on our Safari rack. We can put lights on it, we can have a bracket for our ax, we could have a bracket for a hijack as well if you have a taller sitting Jeep, to be able to Jack it up and then obviously take your spare tire off of the Safari rack and put it onto your vehicle. There's a lot of different things you could do with it and it all kind of looks pretty cool and sporty. So if you want to be that guy going down the road that everybody likes the rig, I would definitely pick up one of these. You might as well just throw a tire up there too.So the first thing we want to do if you already have your Safari rack installed is loosen our feet on one side so we can go ahead and lift this up. When we do that, we're going to take our main bracket here like so, and you can see on the side that has the tabs on it, we're going to have a little gap in that pipe and we're going to lay it down underneath here.

It'll fit pretty nicely and it's going to be at the intersection of both our thicker rails and also these rails here.So once we get that into place, we're going to have two different pieces. We're going to have the threaded portion here and we're going to feed it through our square plate with five holes. Once we get that all the way through, you notice that the size of this on our threaded stud here, it's going to fit into that slot pretty nicely. So once we do that, rotate this around to where it lines up with these two holes here and we can take our included hardware, and one thing to note, as you can see here, it is kind of close, but these holes don't really line up. So, we're going to slide it down to the other set of tabs and then we can go ahead and start putting in our bolts.

Don't thread it on too much because we got to remember we got to get all these sides done and then we'll go ahead and go through them and tighten them down evenly. So now we can go ahead and take our other bracket and our remaining hardware and start threading those into place as well. So now we can go ahead and take a 13 millimeter wrench top and bottom to tighten them down. So now we're pretty much ready to go. All we really need to do is just put this tire up on there. I'm going to try to get it done myself, but depending on what size tire you got, you might need a helping hand. All right, so once we get the threaded stud here in the center of our wheel, we're going to take our little bracket with a little stud and chain, I'm going to face it into the wheel. So that stud is going to fit into our lug nut hole. As you can see, it fits into there pretty nicely. Then we can go ahead and take our wing nut and tighten it down. So now once we get it as tight as we can, we want to get this little excess chain on our bracket and slide it onto our wingnut and what that's going to do is just prevent it from loosening up. It'll loosen a little bit, but then the chains going to prevent it from loosening anymore. As you can see, this tire's pretty sturdy up here. Well everyone, that just about does it for a look at the Surco spare tire holder for your Safari rack.

Fit and finish are great. I use it to hold a 33" tire, have not had any issue. One nit pick the short chain and washer set up for locking is not the cleanest but works.

With the beefed up floor and added cross bars I added this for spare hauling while I fabricate my swing away bumper set up.

Worked it hard for a year great rack
