Video Transcript for Roadmaster Safety Chains and Cables RM-910648-20 Review

Today, we're going to be taking a look at the Roadmaster 20 inch Safety Cable Extensions. These are going to extend the length of your towing system without having to buy new safety cables. The extensions are going to add 20 inches, so you can use high-low receivers, hitch extensions and other accessories. It's going to come with two cables and two quick links. These are going to be rated with a capacity of 8000 pounds. The cables are a braided steel construction with a vinyl coating. So that coating is going to keep the cables from scratching any component of your towing setup.

The cable portion with the vinyl coating is going to give us a diameter of about 3/8 of an inch. Now these quick links are made from a steel construction with a zinc finish. They're going to do a great job at resisting rust and corrosion. It's going to feature a threaded connector for easy connecting and disconnecting, that can be done by hand, or you can use a wrench. This will accept an 5/8 inch wrench or a 15 millimeter wrench. A few measurements that I want to go over with the quick links. I want to go over the overall measurements, so from outer edge to outer edge going this direction, we're looking at about 3 3/16 inch to 3 1/4.

Then going this direction to the outer edge of that barrel, we're looking at about 1 9/16 to 1 5/8 of an inch. Now the opening, measuring the gap right here, that's going to give us a measurement of pretty close to 7/16 of an inch. The diameter of the actual link is going to be 3/8 of an inch, but that threaded portion has a slightly larger diameter. That's going to give us a diameter measurement of about 7/16 to 1/2 of an inch. We'll go over the internal measurements as well. So the usable space from inside edge to inside edge, it's going to be about 2 1/2 inches.

Measuring the usable space, just below that barrel, we're looking at about 3/4 of an inch. Then, to the flat side of the barrel, we're looking at about 5/8 of an inch. Again, these are going to add 20 inches of extension to your towing system. They've got the nice strong connection points on there as well and again, they're just a nice strong durable unit. That's going to do it for today's look at the Roadmaster 20 inch Safety Cable Extensions.

To better align my towbar I had to add use a drop hitch which added another 8" to the towbar length. Since the original Roadmaster safety cables were already tight, I decided to add these Roadmaster safety cable extensions. The extensions are of the same excellent quality as the original cables but now allow me to cross them under the towbar hitch (for added safety) as well as make tighter turns into and out of driveways. Overall I'm very happy with both the quality of product and the excellent service from eTrailer.

Excellent cable to bolt to your frame. Use quick disconnect link hook to safety chains to motorhome.

Exactly what I was looking for. Shipping was fast and the product is high quality. Great site for all my towing needs!!! I had to extend my safety cables
when I added a spare tire carrier to my RV.

cables are still working great for towing my jeep behind my motorhome. They make hooking up the safety cables easy.

I always use etrailer when Im looking for products to address a specific application. These safety cables are being used on my 2016 Jeep Wrangler which has a custom offroad bumper installed. I needed cables that would fit through the lower bumper and were no longer than 20 inches, but had at least a 6000 lb capacity. These type of cables were the only ones that would address the problem and they work great. I will continue to shop at etrailer since you have the best overall selection that I have seen.

by:

These cable extenders were exactly what I needed. My tow bar for my jeep was set up for pulling with my pickup, however when I wanted to pull with my motorhome, I had to add a riser which made the cables too short. I therefore ordered the cable extenders and now they fit perfect.

by:

Very nicely made, works great with my Reese 18" hitch extension!

  • Adapter for Falcon Tow Bar With Rock Hard 4x4 Patriot D-ring Bumper
As long as the bumper you mention is rated by its manufacturer for towing, you won't need a base plate. The Roadmaster # RM-522 Falcon All-Terrain tow bar can be used on a D-ring bumper like the Rock Hard 4x4 Patriot Bumper if the proper adapter is used. You'll need to remove the D-rings on the bumper and measure the width of the tab that they attach to. If the tabs are 3/4 of an inch wide, use # RM-035 or # RM-035-1 if the tabs are 7/8 or 1 inch wide. Because D-ring bumpers don't typically...

  • How to Attach Tow Bar Safety Cables When Using D-Ring Adapters
The best way to attach safety cables like # RM-643 would be to use safety cable extensions like # RM-910648-20 and loop them around the frame members just behind the bumper. This is confirmed by Roadmaster.

  • D-Ring Mount Adapters For A 2018 Jeep Wrangler JL With An Aftermarket Bumper
When using d-ring mount adapters like the Blue Ox Aftermarket Off-Road Bumper Adapter - 7/8" Pin # BX88357 you'll need to attach the safety cables, like part # RM-643, to the frame of the vehicle. Doing this over and over again can be tiresome so what you can do is attach some extensions # RM-910648-20 to the frame and run them out through the bumper for an easy attachment point for your safety cables. That being said, I HIGHLY recommend contacting the manufacturer of your aftermarket...

  • How to Attach Tow Bar Safety Cables to D-ring Bumper When Flat Towing Jeep Wrangler
To make the physical connection between the Roadmaster # RM-676 Nighthawk tow bar and the tab the D-ring is connected to, you'd need the # RM-035 for 7/8 or 1 inch wide tabs or # RM-035-1 for 3/4 inch wide tabs. I'd also recommend you check with the manufacturer of your bumper to make sure it's rated for towing the weight of the vehicle. For the safety cables, since you're not using traditional base plates and there's no apparent place to mount the cables you'll need to use extensions...

  • Hitch Extender for Towing Small Trailer
As long as you are staying within the manufacturers specification in regards to the weights you will be perfectly fine. The Curt Extender # C45796 has a tongue weight capacity of 350lbs and 3500lbs towing or 50% of hitch capacity, whichever is less. In your case for your 2014 Subaru Outback that would be 300lbs tongue weight and 2150lbs towing. You will also more than likely need a Wiring Extension # HM47004 as well as Safety Cable Extensions # RM-910648-20. Be sure to keep these secured...

  • Compatibility of Roadmaster RM-035-1 D-Ring Adapters with Nighthawk Tow Bar
The Roadmaster # RM-035-1 D-ring adapters are indeed compatible with a Roadmaster Nighthawk tow bar. However, because you aren't using traditional base plates, you might have difficulty finding a good spot to attach the safety cables. In this situation, Roadmaster recommends using extensions like # RM-910648-20. You'd want to wrap the extension around the frame members just behind the bumper then attach to the safety cables. If you decide to use the tow bar for a different vehicle,...

  • How To Attach Your Safety Cables When Using D-Ring Adapters To Flat Tow
Typically when using D-Ring adapters # BX88357 you'll have to snake some shorter cables, like # RM-910648-20 around the frame rail of the vehicle and then out to the front of the vehicle to connect to your safety cables. There's no easy definitive answer on how to do this since there's too many variables between each model and the aftermarket bumper so it may take you a bit of time to figure out the best way with your specific setup. You will most likely need to use some quick links # RM-910022 since the hole is fairly small.
