Video Transcript for Review of Reese Replacement Sway Control Friction Pads - 58512

Hi there, I'm Michael with etrailer.com. Today, we're gonna take a quick look at this Reese Replacement Sway Control Friction Pad Set. This set is going to give you four of these friction pads and four mounting screws to replace the friction pads on your Reese Sway Control Weight Distribution System. These are going to be a direct replacement from Reese, so you can trust they are gonna fit right in place of those originals, but just to give you some extra reassurance, you can see that each pad is going to be approximately 1 11/16 of an inch long by about 7/16 of an inch thick, on the small end of our wedge here, we're looking at about 1 5/16 of an inch, and our larger portion of our wedge there, about 1 7/8 of an inch. So if you are needing to replace your original friction pads, this is going to be the set that you need. That completes our look for today.

Again, I'm Michael with etrailer.com. Thanks for watching.

Good prices, great support staff. Will purchase from them again.

Everything is good except the screws are too short for my application

No more white-knuckle, highway-clearing, trailer sway incidents since I've installed this thing. :)

My only gripe is the size of the friction pads. Makes them prone to excessive wear and breakage. They should be one solid piece, instead of 2 small pieces. The pads in my truck last 30k miles slowing down 12k lbs. of weight - these things should last the life of the hitch, properly designed. They're very expensive for what they are, too. Other than that, this setup has completely transformed the way my truck tows the 18' flatbed hauling all different types, styles and weights of cars, trucks, and pallets of bagged coal. Have over 10k miles on the setup so far.

Not crazy about the quality of these pads. Ive replaced 2 since last year, all the same pad on the same side for some reason. The pad delaminates from the metal mounting surface. The screw is prone to heavy rust, and rounded out upon removal. Luckily these new pads did come with new screws. I had to cut a slot in the screw with a dremel, then use an impact driver to extract. Quite a bit of work. Anti-seize is HIGHLY recommended on the screw - just dont go overboard. Reese needs to re-engineer this setup.

I like the Reese Hitch friction anti-control system. But I've changed the friction pads every two to three years. We tow a enclosed race car trailer weighing about 7500 pounds loaded about 5000-6000 miles per year. Historically, they have been easy to change but each time I worry that the screws holding the pads with cause problems. The new pads come with new screws. Nice system but you do have to inspect them at each use. I keep a spare set of pads on hand.

With this last replacement of the friction pads, the screws sheared off when removing them. I just drilled out the threads and replaced the screws with a longer screw and a elastic stop nut. So far, so good. If I shear off he screw, easy peasy to install a new one. The friction pad covers do not open as much with the nuts below the mounting plate, but there is still pleant of room to get the spring bars out or remove the covers if needed. I also freed up up the pivoting system on the friction pad mounts. I suspect if they are dificult to pivot, extra load is put on the friction pads that then leads to premature failurewear of the pad.

Fit perfectly on my travel trailer. However, what I really want to talk about is the amazing service from eTrailer. I know this sounds like a fake post, but I cannot believe how they made sure I got this as fast as possible. I only ordered the cheapest shipping, but they sent me several emails telling me the progress on getting the part from their distributor . Despite the part not being in stock to ship when I ordered it, I still got it in less than a week. I could not be more happy with the service. It will be hard for me to order from anyone else after this, since the price was also great!

Everything is working fine as expected.

Exactly what I needed and could find elsewhere. Bryan was very helpful. There was a little glitch in mailing( my fault) but Bryan was superb in fixing the problem.

I have a Reese Weight Distribution and anti sway hitch # RP66151. It's a little more hassle to hook up than one with chains, but one with chains would not fit my trailer. I do like the way this one works.
The spring bars lay in a J shaped iron with 2 brake type pads in each J iron, the bars actually lay on the pads which helps prevent sway.
Three of the four pads came loose. It appears that they are/were glued to backer plates, which are fastened to the J irons with one metric Button head Phillips screw, which is recessed in the pad and screw into the J-iron.
These Phillips head VERY difficult to get out. And I was advised to use Lock Tite when replacing the screws. Why use Lock-Tite on screws that are very hard to get out? I instead used Button head Allen screws, and longer ones that go all the way through the J-irons, and added a jam nut to the bottom, instead of Lock-Tite.

The new pads had to be ordered from the factory, and I needed to use the trailer before the new pads were scheduled to be shipped.
So I epoxied the 3 pads that had come loose, back on the backer plates, and made the trip with my trailer.
When unhitching the trailer after returning, I found the fourth pad had come loose.
Why do these pads come loose?
The new pads came on schedule.
I epoxied the fourth pad back on the backer plate, but I left the 3 pads that I had epoxied on the trailer and put 1 new pad on where the fourth came off. We will see how my epoxy repair holds up compared to the factory ones.
etrailer kept me informed as to when to expect the new parts. And what Reese recommend.

These pads either wear or crack on the right side, why I don't know. I have the hitch and associated equipement installed per manufactures instructions. Setup is good, truck and trailer unit handle well on the highway. But after several thousand miles, the right side will need replacing. I like the hitch, it is works good. My brother in law has one like it and it does the same thing.

by:

As advertised, perfect fit! Thank you

by:

I have to replace these friction pads every couple of years. The material begins to break apart well before the pads are worn down, however, they perform as needed and there is no alternative as far as replacement pads. As with all previous replacement pads I have ordered, the holes in the friction material is not large enough to accommodate the heads of the included screws. In this set, only one pad had a hole large enough and I had to gently drill out the friction material in the other three to fit the included mounting screws. Care must be taken not to drill through the metal base.

by:

They worked well a year ago and have sat since. I just checked and they look ready to be used again

by:

I am very pleased with the customer service shown to me regarding these parts. Your company kept track of the order and kept me informed on back order status. You were amazing...
The products are hard to locate and are usually on backorder. I think they wear out too quickly for what they cost. We had the hitch professionally installed and still go thru a lot of pads.

by:

The exact part I was looking for. I have an older weight distribution hitch and thought I might have a hard time finding parts. Shipping was very fast. Installing these may be a bear since the old screws are so rusty . If I have to drill them out then so be it. I couldn't be happier with this purchase.

by:

After only a few times of using this sway control system, the pads break away from their metal backing place rendering them useless. Because of this I am not getting full use of the friction pad. Typically only %15 worn.

by:

Fit just like the original ones and work great!

by:

I received the order on-time and in good condition. Biggest challenge was removing the old friction pads as the bolts were badly rusted. Finally drilled them out and rethreaded the holes. Also received the LED strip tail lights. Easily installed and working great.

by:

Exactly what was needed and pretty quick replacement. Use of an E Z out was required due to the spring bar wearing down the phillips screw head that hold the friction pads in place.

Very quick delivery time.

by:

etrailer did an excellant job on their part. The part I needed was back ordered for a couple of months due to a manufacturing delay. etrailer monitored the status every week or so and kept me informed of the status. Their customer service representative did everything in her power to get me what I needed.

by:

The Reese Friction Pads I ordered arrived in about five days, are exactly what I ordered. The reason I ordered them from Etrailer.com was because Etrailer shipped charges were less than $.$$, other sites had shipping cost around cost up around $12.00

by:

The friction pads I ordered arrived quickly and at a good price. They were easy to install and now after a year they are still doing fine. Thank you ETrailer!

by:

Arrived on time. Is an exact replacement for the OEM product. Only took about 5 minutes to install.

Working as expected. Cheap enough that it is a good idea to just replace every other year.

by:

Very good direct replacement perfect fit

by:

This has been my 5th purchase from ETRAILER and every purchase has been outstanding. Because of this I'm making ETRAILER my number ONE go-to for all my trailer needs. Quality products (many made in the USA) plus fast shipping.

by:

I made the mistake of ordering these before taking the worn and broken pads off. The screws are rust-fused to the brackets and will not come off. The overall design of this w/d system is poor and I definitely would not recommend it.

by:

Just what I needed at a good price and with excellent service. Etrailer is the place for you to get all of your trailer related needs.
