  • Includes terminal grease

Specs:

  • Quantity: 1 diode
  • Maximum amperage: 5 amps per diode

This Hopkins Quick-Lock diode makes wiring your towed car a snap - literally. Whereas traditional diode kits require that the wires be stripped, crimped, and twisted to be fit into spade connectors, this diode does the work for you. Just insert the wires into the diode box and snap down the lid to splice the wires together.

Separate vs. Combined Lighting Systems

Some automobiles operate on a 3-wire system, in which the brake signal and the turn signals travel along different wires to illuminate different lights. (Typically, these vehicles have amber turn signals.) This is referred to as a "separate lighting system." When you wire your vehicle using this diode, your towed car's lighting system will operate in a combined fashion regardless of whether it typically has combined or separate lighting. This means that the brake and turn signals sent by your RV to your towed car will be carried on a single wire. As a result, your car's brake lights will do the flashing for the turn signals. Your vehicle will still function as designed when not hooked up to your RV.

Note: If your RV operates on a 3-wire system - and it does not currently have a 4-way trailer connector installed - you may need to use a 3-to-2 wiring converter (RM-732 - sold separately).

If your towed vehicle normally operates on a 3-wire system and you want to retain that functionality, you can add on 2 additional Quick-Lock diodes (HM56306 - sold separately). If your RV operates on a 2-wire system, you will also need to use a 2-to-3 wiring converter (118158 - sold separately) to break out the separate tail light function.

Video Transcript for Hopkins Tow Bar Wiring HM56306 Review

Today we're going to review part number HM56306. This is the Hopkins Quick-Lock Diode for Towed Vehicles, quantity of one. This Hopkins Quick-Lock Diode will make wiring your towed car a snap. The traditional diode kits that you use will require the wires have to be stripped and then crimped and the twisted to fit into spade connectors. This diode does all the work for you. Basically, you just insert the wires into the diode box, snap down the lid and it'll splice the wires together. This part is designed to prepare your towed car's lighting system to accept your RV's tail, brake, and turn signal lights, which are required for towing. This diode does permit electrical flow in one direction only.

This will prevent electrical feedback and the damage that it can cause to your towed car. The other nice this is when this is installed it won't interfere with your vehicle's electrical system when it's not hooked up to the RV. It requires no crimping or stripping of the wires. Basically you'll just place each wire in the correct V shaped metal slot. There's two on this side and on one that side. Snap the lid down and it'll splice the wires together.

Once that lid is snapped down it'll protect the wires from any corrosion. It gives you nice weather proofing. They also do include this package of dielectric grease which is always required to put on your electrical connections. Any time you make an electrical connection it's good to put the dielectric grease on to help prevent any corrosion. A few specs on this. The quantity is for one diode.

The max amperage is 5 amps per diode. On some vehicles it might require 4 diodes. If that's the case we do sell a kit that includes 4 diodes. It's part number HM56305 and we do list it on this product page as a related product. Just to show you basically how this would work. Let's say we take this green wire which would be let's say the right turn signal.

We take the red wire which would be like the stop and let's say there's a red wire here which would also be a stop. You can see the wires are over the V connectors. Then what you do, you see the 4 tabs on the top of the lid, we'll just put two in the back, just like that. With the two in the back, I still have to get that all the way in. There we go. Then what you want to do is take a pair of pliers and push down on there. You can see that will snap right there and snap right there. You can see that it's all sealed, the wires are all crimped into place, they won't go anywhere. You've got a nice weather proof seal on them. That should do it for the review on part number HM56306. This is the Hopkins Quick-Lock Diode for Towed Vehicles, quantity of one.

  • Will the Roadmaster Single Park Light Diode Work on a Radiator Fan
It is doubtful that the maximum amp draw of your radiator fan exceeded the 85 amp rating of the Roadmaster Single Park Light Diode part # RM-690 so yes, it should work just fine for you. We do have others like you mentioned but they would most likely not be rated high enough for your radiator fan. For example, the Hopkins Quick-Lock Diode part # HM56306 has a 5 amp maximum rating.

  • Diode to Prevent Back Feeding from Trailer Battery to Running Lights
For a diode I recommend # RM-790 which is rated for 85 amps. However, trailer wiring, both on the trailer and on the vehicle side, is too small to charge up a regular battery. And most vehicle alternators are unable to push back the amperage required to charge up a regular battery. At best it will provide a maintenance charge and keep the battery from depleting. It can charge up a small breakaway batter such as # HM20008 though. But these batteries are rated much lower than a regular car...

  • What is Necessary to Tow a 1998 Jeep Wrangler Behind a Motor Home
The Hopkins Quick-Lock Diode, # HM56306, likely won't be very beneficial; if you are already using a wiring harness on your 1998 Jeep Wrangler, I recommend a higher power diode, Roadmaster # RM-790, because it will be able to handle more amps. Please refer to the attached picture for reference on how it is wired. If you do need a wiring harness, and plan on flat-towing your 1998 Jeep Wrangler with some regularity, I recommend using the Roadmaster Tail Light Wiring Kit with Bulbs, # RM-155,...

  • How to Wire the GloLight LED Trailer Tail Light Part # STL178RB to a Trailer Connector
The white wire on the back of the GloLight LED Trailer Tail Light part # STL178RB is for the ground. If you were wiring it to a trailer connector like part # HMC20031 then you would just need to make sure that it is attached to the ground terminal and no additional grounds would be needed. The outer ring of the light that you are referring to is made of plastic just like the body of the light is. The wire leads are around 6" long. I have attached a review video for you.
