Today we're going to take a look at the Dexter 12 1/4 inch left hand driver side self-adjusting electric brake assembly for 12000 pound axles. Now, electric brakes are easier to install. They offer more user control than hydrolytic brakes. Basically, they require only an electric brake controller, which we do sell separately on our website. There's no actuator or hydraulic lines necessary with electric brakes. Now this assembly happens to be a self adjusting brake and you can tell that by seeing the cable that goes around the pulley here, attaches to the lever, which automatically adjusts the gear at the bottom there. Now, self adjusting brakes will automatically adjust to deliver optimum performance and breaking power.

There's no need for manual break adjustments and proper adjustment, of course, will lead to better brake efficiency and less wear on your tow vehicle brakes. Now this assembly is a left hand driver side brake assembly. The mounting bolts and hardware to install this is sold separately. A few specs on this. The size of it is 12 1/4 inch diameter by five inches wide. The diameter would be measured from this brake shoe all the way over to this brake shoe so, if we put the rule on it, there's your 12 1/4 inch diameter.

The five inches wide would be the width of the pad on the brake shoe so, if we put the ruler, there's your 5 inches wide. Notice those require a brake mounting flange bolt pattern of seven bolts. You can see the seven bolt holes right here and it does require the use of a 12 1/4 inch brake drum. Now the wheel size they use is 15 inches or larger and, again, the axle rating it's designed for is 12000 pound axles. Now these are electric brakes so they do require power. I'm gonna turn it to the back here and you can see there's two black wires here that need to be connected.

One goes to a brake feed. One goes to a brown. They're both black wires so either wire can be used for either function and this one is a left hand driver side assembly and the easiest way to tell that . Now when you get a new one, of course, there'll be a sticker that'll tell you that but, if the sticker wasn't on there and you needed to find out what side it goes on, is just loo at the length of the pad on the shoe. This pad goes from here to here.

This one's all the way from here to here. This is a longer pad. This is the shorter pad. The shorter pad is the primary shoe. That'll always face the front of the trailer so that's gonna tel you that this is the left hand driver side assembly.
