Video Transcript for Draw-Tite Wiring - Trailer Connectors - 18004 Review

Today, we're going to review part number 18004. This is the Draw Tite 4-Pole Trailer End Connector. This is 12 inches long. It also comes with the 4 wire caps to attach it to the wires on your trailer. Basically, the standard 4-way wires would be the white for the ground, the brown for the tail lights, the yellow for the left turn and brake, and the green for the right turn and brake, so when you go to attach this to your trailer, you do want to test the wires using a tester to make sure you connect the wires function to function, because sometimes the colors will not always match up. A good thing to do is to use a tester that we sell separately on our website that you can use to test the wires and then hook these wires using the included wire caps. That should do it for the review on part number 18004, the Draw-Tite4-Pole Trailer End Connector. .

Great product no issues at all. Product as described & fit properly.

Pretty straight forward. I used it to switch my European trailer's connection to be able to connect to my Wrangler's 4-pin trailer hookup.
No issues. works great.

The parts are still on my European trailer and working well! The trailer is a German brand and started its life there in Germany being pulled by my American-spec Jeep Wrangler. The trailer’s wiring and the Jeep’s connections needed to be massaged in order to work. The parts I ordered from etrailer and the writeups for the project on your site made it all possible. Now the trailer is titled and registered in Virginia and enjoying its life on this side of the Pacific!

The wiring harness worked great. I used it to connect a back up camera..Instead of fooling around with getting to the back up wires on the tail lights, I just clipped the harness to the wires on the back up camera(one live, one ground) and plugged that into my 4 pole trailer plug in the back of my pickup. when I turn on my headlights. it turns on the camera. It took all of 3 minutes to do that vs God no how long trying to disassemble and reassemble the tail lights to find a backup wire.

by:

received the item in 4 business days, just in time to fix my trailer for commercial lawn service.

Never used wire caps before, they are great. My 4 pole trailer harness actually has 5 wires, to my surprise, and I was able to fit both brown (running lights) in the cap and it works fine. I did wrap it all up with electrical tape to be safe.

by:

Perfect product. Great installation instructions. Now I need European adaptor to fit European trailer lights.

by:

Landlord dog chewed up the wire harness and this new has being doing the trick ever since! (Over a year now)

by:

The video on installing the trailer hitch was very helpful to me. I was fooled by the Trailer End Connector. I assumed it was the wire connector that I needed to attach to my car, and there was no wiring instruction. So I struck out there. Fortunately I had someone who knew what they were doing help me to wire the proper connector to my car. Your service overall was fast and I did appreciate all the help we received from you. Great value! Exactly like the original harness plug that came with the trailer 12 yrs. ago. Even comes with 4 wire taps to make a secure waterproof connection.

by:

Great product easy to install don't care for the clips used my own connectors. E Trailer again exceeds all expectations. Thank You

by:

I ordered the Hidden Hitch with a 4 prong flat blade plug-in, the cover and mount for the plug-in, which I installed on an '09 Hummer. The product seems to be well made, it installed easily and to my surprise it was delivered in two days. Thanks

by:

high quality, exactly as described. etrailer.com is a very useful and knowledgeable website.

by:

The quick connectors made replacing the old bad trailer connection quick and easy.

by:

It did the job, I soldered all of my connections followed by shrink tubing.

by:

Needs butt connectors, not splitters.

by:

Installed easily. I used my own butt splice connectors instead of the ones supplied with the plug.

by:

Exactly what I expected and worked grea t.

Fast shipping. Good packaging. Easy to install. Well made. All in all a great buy!

by:

It really was easy to install. And it continues to work well after one year of use.

by:

I was a little worried about ordering this product because the cost seemed cheap!
After receiving it in the mail I installed it right away and I have to say I am very impressed with the quality of the product.
The entire process from ordering to fast shipping was a great experience. Pricing and shipping was great and I would definitely recommend this store to anyone.

by:

It took a little longer to get than expected, but it arrived in good condition. I have not plugged in the lights to check it out yet. Customer service was great...

by:

The product was excellent and worked to perfection.

by:

Great product. Hasn’t let me down yet!

by:

Seems to be ok but the wire length is much shorter than expected. Will still work fine, just be ware.

  • Recommended 5-Way Flat Harness With 16 Gauge Wire Over 25 Feet Long
For that length, I recommend the 5-Pole Flat Connector # A40W5B. This has 16 gauge wires with the exception of the blue wire that is 18 gauge.

  • Troubleshooting Running Lights Not Working on a Trailer Towed by a 1985 Volkswagen Vanagon
The problem could be with the trailer connector. If you used the 4-Pole Trailer End Connector, # 18004, that you have referenced, it may be causing problems. Your 1985 VW Vanagon requires the Taillight Converter Hardwire Kit with 4 Pole End, # 119178KIT. Your Vanagon has separate turn and stop lights, that is called a 3 wire system. Most trailers use a two wire system so a converter like the # 119178KIT is required to convert the 3 wire system down to a 2 wire system. I have included a...

  • New 4-Way Trailer Connector has 4 Wires But Old 4-Way had 5 Wires
Your old connector was what is called a wishbone harness such as # A35W42B. It had 2 wires that went to the running light pin. The running light pin is the one next to the ground pin. Attach both running light wires to the brown wire on the new 4-Way. White is ground, green is right turn signal/brake lights, and yellow is left turn/brake lights.

  • Troubleshooting Trailer Running Lights with Potential Grounding Problem
It sounds like you have the lights wired properly, but if the trailer's main white ground wire is not grounded to the trailer frame it is quite possible that some light functions will work while others will not. Often it can happen that a weak ground will allow enough current for some lighting functions to get through, but not enough for other functions. Running lights, which stay on, draw more power than other lights (brakes and turn signals) that are on only briefly. This could be why...

  • Troubleshooting Trailer Taillight Signals that Stop Working When the Running Lights are On
This sounds like a ground issue. Ground problems normally show up when there is more draw on a system such as when you have the running lights on and then use another function like a turn signal or brake light. Make sure that the vehicle side and trailer side connectors are clean and free of corrosion inside and out. The main connector grounds should be attached to clean and corrosion free bare metal surfaces. The light grounds should also be attached to clean and corrosion free bare metal...

  • Why Would Truck's Trailer Running Light Circuit Keep Blowing if It's Not a Short
It could be just that the running lights on your trailer just draw too much amperage for running light circuit on your truck. Since you said it's a livestock trailer I have seen some that have quite a few running lights all around them. What you can do is try disconnecting a few of them on the trailer by either cutting the wiring to them or disconnecting the ground of the lights to see if the problem persists. If the problem stops you would need to either convert the lights to LED which...

  • Wiring 1984 Mazda Pickup to Tow Trailer With Separate Brake and Turn Signal Lights
The correct way to wire this up would be to use the Taillight Converter, part # 119178KIT. Wire this converter into the tail light circuits on the tow vehicle. The inputs would be wired into each lighting circuit, running lights, right turn, left turn, and brake lights. The converter includes a tester, which will make the installation easier. On the trailer, you will need the Vehicle to Vehicle Tail Light Converter part # 118158, as well as the the trailer end connector, part # 18004.

  • Malfunctioning Brake Lights on a Trailer Behind a 2004 Ford Expedition
The Ford Expedition should already be grounded properly, but we will check that. Start with the vehicle and work back to the trailer. We can eliminate the vehicle as the source of the problem pretty easily. Disconnect the trailer and have someone sit in the driver seat. Take a circuit tester, like part # PTW2993, and test the Expedition connector. Clip the alligator clip onto the exposed post of the connector, this is the white wire and should be your ground. Have someone turn on the...

  • Troubleshooting Clearance Lights of Trailer Not Functioning on Magic Tilt Trailer
You mentioned the ground wire of the trailer wiring not being connected to anywhere. That would be what I would assume is the problem. It should connect to the frame of the trailer. On tilt trailer's it's not uncommon for their to be grounding issues so what I would recommend doing is run a ground wire from each light assembly back to the main ground wire of the trailer wiring harness which then should also be attached to trailer frame. That will for sure take care of the problem.

  • Trailer Brake Lights and Running Lights Work but Turn Signals Do Not
On a trailer that uses a 4-Way wiring harness, the brake lights and turn signals are on the same circuit. So, it is strange that the signals are not working when the brake lights are. First, with the trailer not connected, check the connector on the tow vehicle using a circuit tester like # PTW2993. This is to make sure that a signal is coming through to the vehicle side trailer connector. If a turn signal is not coming through there must be a problem with the vehicle wiring. Depending...

  • Trailer Lights Not Working Using Optronics Trailer Light Kit # TL29BK On 1995 Mitsubishi Montero
Since you have tested the vehicle side connector and they work correctly, you have eliminated the vehicle side as being the problem. So you will want to check the trailer wiring and the ground connections on the trailer. The Peterson M545 trailer wiring kit you have mentioned uses a wishbone harness like the Optronics Standard Trailer Light Kit # TL29BK that we sell. This means it will have 5 wires coming out of the back of the 4-pole connector. That might be why it looks like it does...

You can try replacing the factory 4-pole harness on your 1998 Ranger with part # 118241 from Tow Ready. This has a round connector on one end to plug in to the OEM wiring under the vehicle on the driver's side. If the problem is downstream of that point, then this should fix you up. You can also check to make sure that any fuses labeled trailer or towing are okay. If there is a problem in the wiring upstream of that connection point, then that may be tougher to find and correct. You can...

  • Only Some LEDs Illuminate on LED-Type Trailer Lights on Boat Trailer
It sounds as though there is an issue within the one left-side LED light assembly itself. Since LEDs draw so little power it is unlikely that there is an issue with overloading the trailer wiring. If only 7 of the 10 LED elements are now working it is most likely that the problem is in the light fixture itself. LED-type lights do not have user-replaceable elements so it will probably be necessary to replace the entire fixture. Not all LED trailer lights are fully submersible. You definitely...

  • No Brake Lights After Wiring A 1989 Toyota Pickup and Trailer
It sounds as if you may have wired your 1989 Toyota truck with a 2 wire wiring harness like part # 18002. Toyota vehicles have European wiring, which has the turn signal and brake signal circuit separated. For these vehicles a converter is required to combine the stop and turn signals for towing a trailer. For the 1989 Toyota Pickup you will need the T-One Wiring Harness, # 118379. This harness plugs inline with the vehicle tail lights and has a converter to allow the vehicle stop lights...

  • No Trailer Running Lights On Trailer But Stop/Turn Signals Works
It sounds like you are having issues with your running lights which are actually on a separate circuit than the stop/turn lights. The first thing you will want to do is test the running light pin on the vehicle side trailer connector. If you don't get power here then you may have a blown fuse or shorted wire. If you do have power then apply power to the running light pin on the trailer side trailer connector. If the lights do not work then you most likely have a short in the running light...

In typical 4-pole wiring the wire color convention is: white is ground, brown is running lights, yellow is left stop/turn and green is right stop/turn. This wiring scheme information is included in the linked help...

The Curt T-Connector Vehicle Wiring Harness with 7-Way Trailer Connector # CU86FR has multiple fuses that all need to be in the correct locations and functional and then you also need to make sure the ground wire connection is good.
