4-Way Trailer Connector Installation

Because the color/function of the wires on this connector may not match the color/function of those on your vehicle, be sure to use a tester (sold separately) to double check the function of each wire on your vehicle's tail light wiring harness before installing this connector. Once you've figured out the functions of your vehicle's wiring, use quick-splice or butt connectors (sold separately) to connect the corresponding wires on the trailer connector.

The number 1 reason trailer wiring comes up faulty is a bad ground, so make sure your ground wire has a solid and clean connection to metal. To make this connection, you'll need a self-tapping screw (sold separately) and the the included ring terminal.

Wiring Configuration

Wire Color Wire Function
Green Right turn and brake light
Brown Tail lights and running lights
White Ground
Yellow Left turn and brake light

Connector is Easy to Mount

This connector can be mounted on your bumper or attached to another bracket (sold separately) that mounts under your bumper. Simply run self-tapping screws (sold separately) the through molded-in holes on the connector housing.

Quick Tips:

We install a lot of wiring harness around here, so we thought we'd share a few tips we've picked up over the years:

  • Butt connectors - especially heat-shrink ones - provide the most secure, longest-lasting connection, so we'd recommend you grab a few and swap them out for the quick-splices in this kit.
  • Use a circuit tester on the plug terminals once the harness is installed to make sure everything's working. There's nothing worse than figuring out that you have a bad ground or a faulty connection right before you're about to hit the road.
  • Be sure to put a little bit of dielectric grease on the 4-way plug to protect the terminals from dirt, grime, and corrosion.

Hitch for 2018 EcoSport SES. Easy to install and looks good. Wire end with cover also looks good

Product was awesome. My last two connectors have corroded so bad within a year that I constantly was having to take a wire brush and clean off the pins to get good contact. I'm waiting to see what the environmental cap does to eliminate me having to do this. Also bought the vehicle side. Would highly recommend this to anybody with a trailer hook-up. Only thing I would suggest is to make sure anybody purchasing also buys the splices since none come with the product. All in all, a great buy. Thanks!

Using dielectric grease in the trailer connectors can also help reduce corrosion of the contacts.

Once again, if I'd bought the custom wiring harness, it would have saved me some time

  • 4-way Options for use With a Tow Ready Mounting Bracket
The Hopkins 4-way # HM48030 that you referenced is a great 4-way, but like you noticed, it is much larger than most 4-ways so it would not fit through the Mounting Bracket 4-Pole Flat # 18144 that you have. You basically have two choices at this point. You can either buy a different 4-way that will fit through the hole of the # 18144. Or you could cut off your # HM48030 and then run the wires through the front of the # 18144 and then reconnect the wires to the 4-way wiring of your vehicle. Check...

  • Does Dolly Towing 2005 Prius Require Use of Additional Lights
If you are towing your Prius on a tow dolly like # RM-2050-1 that has built-in taillights and turn signals you do not have to also wire the car's lights to operate. However, in the spirit of better-safe-than-sorry it becomes a pretty easy call to add a low-cost set of magnetic tow lights to the car to improve visibility for other motorists. Magnetic tow lights like # TL21RK are inexpensive, easy to install and will only increase your safety on the road. You will need to splice in an additional...

  • How to Make a 6-Way Square to 4-Way Flat Trailer Wiring Adapter
The 6-Way square trailer connector is not used by a lot of trailer manufacturers. A lot of Jayco trailers may have them but mostly you come across the 4-Way flat, like what you have on your trailer, and the 7-Way blade for RV applications. What I recommend is to convert the 6-Pole on the Monaco to a 4-Way. You can do this very easily by removing the 6-Way plug, and then testing the wires for function using a circuit tester like # 3808 if needed before installing them in a new 4-Way, #...

  • Recommended Wiring To Add Trailer Harness And Brake Controller To 2016 Ford E-450 Cutaway
We do not offer any wiring harnesses that are designed for your 2016 E-450. I am afraid any trailer wiring you want to do is going to be a hardwire effort. We do offer universal wiring harnesses that will work for you, but you will need to identify the wires for each of the functions by using a circuit tester like part # PTW2993. You will need to first install a 4-way harness like part # HM48030. You will also need a 7-way connector for the RV, so I recommend part # ETBC7. This plugs...

  • Wiring Needed For Adding a 4-Way Flat Trailer Connector On a Toyota Land Cruiser With 24V Power
First you are going to need to determine if your Toyota Land Cruiser has a full 24 volt wiring system or if the 24 volt is only ran on the starting system. This was the most common way several of the vehicles were wired so the tail lighting and other functions would all still use 12 volt power. This would allow you to use the Wiring Harness # C59496 to get a 4-way flat connector. A Multimeter # PT89ZR can be used to verify if your current lighting is 12 volt or 24 volt. If you have 24...

  • Troubleshooting no Power to Trailer Turn Signals
If your trailer turn signals are not working there are a number of different reasons and there are some troubleshooting steps you can take to determine the specific problem. The first thing to do is take a look at your owner's manual to locate where any trailer fuses or relays and ensure they are all there and in working order. If they are, since you tested the plug on your 2001 Chevy and found no signal at the turn signals, check your connector for corrosion, which can be green or white...

The only way to use your Pilot Skull Lighted Hitch Cover # CR-018 with your 2017 Ford F-150 without getting the turn signal error message would be to hardwire in a new 4-Way connector like # HM48030 to use with the cover. This will allow you to bypass the trailer tail light sensors on the truck so that the error message doesn't come up. I realize this sounds like silly workaround since you already have a working 4-Way but it is unfortunately the only option that would prevent that error...

  • Troubleshooting Trailer Wiring For Double Towing Camper and Motorcycle Trailer Behind 2016 Tundra
It sounds like you want to tow 2 trailers and need the wiring for both. It is completely possible to do that as long as your truck can handle the total weight of the two loaded trailers. For the wiring, there are a couple of different options. You can run an extremely long harness like you mentioned that will be a simple customized length or you can tap into your trailer wires to create a harness at the back of your camping trailer. Since using the Ford Brake Light Trailer Hitch Cover # CR-007F on your 2017 Ford Expedition is causing an error code, you will need to either add an additional 4-way connector like the # HM48030 to bypass the OEM wiring, or you can add load resistors # DI34ZR to the yellow and green turn signal wires of the cover. • How to Make Coiled 6-Way to 4-Way Adapter
I personally don't like using adapters if I don't have to so what I would do is use the part # RM-1064-B for the coiled section, the part # HM48440 for the 6-way section and then for the 4-way use the # HM48030 wired up correctly and you'd have a coiled 6-way to 4-way adapter without using any adapters that would work very well.

  • Running Lights Work But Brake Lights and Turn Signals Do Not Work on Coleman Camper
The best way to start troubleshooting your truck and trailer is to disconnect the two and test each one separately. If you have access to a different tow vehicle or trailer you can test using one of these to isolate the problem to either your truck or camper. Inspect both the vehicle and trailer connectors for signs of dirt, discoloration or corrosion. Even very slight greenish or whitish discoloration on the connectors can interfere with signal transmission. You can try cleaning the...

The reason for the error is the LED in the hitch cover. This has a very low power draw which causes errors in vehicles like your 2022 Ford Edge ST. The only way to fix it is to wire in an aftermarket 4-way like the # HM48030 to bypass the system or add load resistors like # DI34ZR to your stop/turn wires on your 4-way.
