Determining the Bolt Pattern

The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.


Bolt Pattern - Even

On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: 8 on 6-1/2 means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)


Bolt Pattern - Odd

To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: 5 on 4-1/2 means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)


Bolt Pattern - Side

Measuring the distance (D) from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

  • If D = 2-5/8", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2"
  • If D = 2-3/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4"
  • If D = 3", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5"
  • If D = 3-1/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2"

Very satisfied with the form, fit, and function of these drums. Very substantial, thicker material and larger overall surface areas as compared to my originals (see attached picture). The trade-off is that they weigh more - increasing dry weight on a small (Hélio O2) tear-drop trailer must be monitored, those added pounds take away from safe and prudent cargo carrying capacity.

The staff at eTrailer.com are very helpful and knowledgeable - ask if you're unsure. I originally ordered through the Internet and received the wrong products - because I neglected to ask questions. The return went smooth, but I had to pay for it (my error). The next round arrived well packaged (externally), but there was thin packing tape all over the outside of the hubs and some on the inside rubbing surface of the hubs. It took some doing to get it all off. There was a little rust on the non-contact surfaces of the hub as well as on the brake housing. On the brake housing, you can see some rust in the pic. Looks like it may have been rebuilt. This doesn't seem to have any effect on its operation though. Seals, Races & Bearings are super clean and fit perfectly. I installed these brakes onto the existing '4.5 on 5' flange on a 2000 pound axle (on a 2004 Aliner LX Classic Pop-up trailer). It came with the bolts to attach to the flange, but be sure to order the adjuster grommets, lock washers and 7/16x20 fine thread nuts, since it doesn't come with them. Once I got the wiring set up properly, it works exactly as it should. I prewired the setup prior to delivery. My error was that I assumed the only wire I'd need to run was the blue (brake) wire, but there are two wires on the brake housing as you can see in the picture. Either one goes to the blue (doesn't matter which) and the other attaches to the neutral (white) wire that goes back through the trailer's main wiring harness. Simply attaching the wire to the trailer frame (ground) like I initially did as seen in the picture looked like a good clean setup and easy solution to my one-wire mistake. Unfortunately, it DID NOT WORK. The secondary (neutral) wire must be detected by the tow vehicle's brake controller. Plan ahead and buy the blue and white primary wires (20 feet of 14 or 16 gauge will work) and run them next to each other before hand. Be sure to house the wires in 'plastic split loom tubing' so they don't rub against anything and zip tie them to the frame, so they're not hanging or in the way of anything. Happy braking. :-)

When I purchase the first drum I mistakenly assumed I was getting two drums (similar to the 7" Brake Kit Item # 23-47-48 I purchased at the same time). This second review is because I had to buy a second drum separately after realizing my mistake. Note: I recognize this was my mistake - nothing against etrailer, who are and always have been awesome.

I have received the product ordered, but have not installed. Parts received look to be the correct items. Due to bearing problems on our camper during a recent trip I need to replace the hub on one side and will replace the bearing on the opposite side.
Lisa was very helpful with the ordering process, made sure the parts were the correct items, and suggested ways in improve the ordering process. The parts were packaged properly and received without damage. She indicated the parts would be here at a certain time, and they were. The entire ordering process was seamless.

Drum and brake arrived safe and sound, was well packed, and worked like a champ. I used the shotgun approach for a brake grabbing problem on the right side of my very small motorcycle camper trailer. I tried everything to fix it, needed quick repair to go on a trip, so ordered the whole thing (drum, brakes, bearings incl.).

Glad I did, as there is no more grabbing and overheated drum, AND better gas mileage.

I never found out for sure what the original problem was, but now suspect bearings since they appeared pretty sloppy in their housing. I assume the worn bearings caused the drum to move around on the spindle, causing grabbing from time to time.

If the wheel studs werent bent from hitting a pothole or road debris, Id recommend checking the loaded weight of the trailer to ensure the axle isnt overloaded.

So instead you'd want the # 8-257-5UC3 which is the version of this hub that has a brake drum attached to it.     I attached a chart that has all of the recommended lug nut torque specs for trailer wheels. Based on your studs being 1/2 inch, your wheels being 15 inches in diameter, and your lug nuts being coned you would want to torque your lug nuts to 90-120 ft lbs of torque.
