Video Transcript for Brophy Hitch Reducer Trailer Hitch Receiver Review

Today I will be taking a quick look at the Brophy Hitch Reducer from a two inch to an inch and a quarter. This is part number HT02. We'll go ahead and show you how it performs. Here at the back of our ATV, our ATV does have a two inch hitch, which is installed on the back of our chassis. The adapter sleeve is going to work really well, because it allows us to install and inch and a quarter accessory onto our ATV. You can see that it has two pinholes here in the sleeve and that's going to allow us to actually slide it into the shank of our two inch hitch. Our hitch reducer does come with a half inch hitch pin, which is going to be used to install the sleeve to our two inch hitch. This is a great way to install an inch and a quarter accessory.

For example, if you have a two inch receiver installed on your ATV, but you have other inch and a quarter accessories, this little adapter sleeve is a great way to just slide it into your hitch instead of having to switch out receivers. You can see it is coated in a black powder coat finish that is going to help resist rust and corrosion. Now we have this other pin which is a standard 5/8 inch pin and clip that are sold separately. That's going to install your two inch accessories. For example, there is one pin that does come with this and that pin is usually designed to secure the sleeve to the receiver so that you will need an anti-rattle device or some sort of hitch pin and clip to secure your accessory. Now you can see that we have our inch and a quarter accessory, we're going to slide the shank into the tapered end of our sleeve. Now you can see that it's going to have a smaller diameter on one side of the sleeve and it's going to have a regular two inch diameter on the other side.

We'll slide this in and basically just line up the hitch pin hole with our accessory and the hitch pin hole with our adapter sleeve. Now that we have our accessory installed, we'll go ahead and show you how it performs. Now to complete today's review of the Brophy Hitch Reducer from a two inch hitch to an inch and a quarter, part number HT02. .

This has worked great to reduce my 2" hitch so that I can continue to use my 1 1/4" Thule bike rack, and I like that it doesn't extend out much from the hitch. After my last trip though, the inset separated from the larger piece. I can still use it, but without the smaller piece fixed in place, I can't put it on the car first and then slide the bike rack into it since the smaller piece slides, and it's impossible to line the holes up. It's also rusted more than I expected. It wasn't inexpensive, and I was hoping it would last longer. I've used it for maybe a dozen trips.

by:

Perfect fit BUT the inner tube broke away from the outer tube after about a dozen trips. One small weld on the outside corner is all that holds it on. The small amount of play must have been too much for it. I was even using an anti-rattle lock pin. Very disappointing due to the price point. And now it’s unsafe to use as it could slip right out of the receiver.

It is unusual to hear about this happening with the reducer. I would like to ask if you could send a picture of the reducer. I want to reach out to the manufacturer about it.

I did reach out the manufacturer. They advised that the inner tube is typically a tight fit and that the tack weld is there just to help hold it in place and that the inner tube does not serve any structural value. Once the pin is in place it holds it all in as well.

by:

Rochelle was great! She was very helpful in my decision to purchase the extension for my bike rack. Also, she was professional and friendly.

by:

tight fit, does not slide on and off ea sily

by:

Fits perfectly, added the Silent Hitch Pin and it’s awesome. Would recommend it because etrailer has been fantastic. One happy customer here.

by:

It did what is was supposed to, reduce from a 2" to 1 1/4", it work but it is a little loose, bike carrier moves around a lot.

by:

Works well to mount a 1-1/4" bike rack in a 2" receiver. I don't see excessive wobble.

by:

Having spoken with a knowledgeable E-Trailer representative, I was glad she knew what I was trying to describe and needed to connect a cargo basket that has a smaller hitch to my larger camper hitch. Looking at the item as we spoke on the phone, I must admit I couldn't see how it was going to work. I received the Hitch Reducer in the mail just two days later. And sure enough, looks can be deceiving, it Does work ! Thank you Paula S at E-Trailer for your professional listening and expert knowledge of what I needed and delivery of exactly that ! Sincerely, Melanie D.

by:

It works very well. Keeps the hitch secure and tight, no rattles whatsoever.

by:

Fits tight, very secure, compact size. Works perfect

by:

I bought this to use a cargo rack that was given to me on my 2013 Murano. My hitch is 2" and the cargo carrier is 1 1/4". This made the transition perfectly. The best part is it's not so long like any of the others that I've found. This being only 7" long, my cargo rack does not stick out so far like it would with a 12" adapter. Fast shipping, great communication from etrailer.

After a year, this is still working perfect. Thanks.

by:

The hitch adjuster is solidly constructed and fits easily into my two inch hitch, though it seems a little loose. Some play is, however, probably necessary for normal use. My 1 1/4" bike rack fits well into the internal dimension. I plan to use tie downs to steady the bike rack and minimize side-to-side wobble. Not sure if the dimensions on outer and inner fit could be enlarged just a bit to improve wobble without causing difficulty with assembly and removal. I may be able to add something more about this once I have worked with it under driving conditions. Overall, the product is just what I expected it to be.

The adapter has worked just as needed to reduce my regular hitch so it accepts the smaller arm of my bike carrier.

by:

The weld failed on the reducer sleeve insert and has come loose. Sent it back for RMA, but the replacement had the same problem.

My load was within limit (Thule T2 Pro 1-1/4" rack + 2 bikes).

I gave up on it and just bought a new 2" rack.

I will have our customer service team reach out to you. When you use a reducer or extender it will move the pivot point of the accessory further away from the vehicle which can place more stress on the hitch receiver. When using this reducer it does reduce the tongue weight of the hitch to 300 pounds. You will want to use a anti rattle device with the reducer like part # 63232 to reduce movement. You can also use a stabilizing strap like part # 18050 with the bike rack to the vehicle.

by:

Hitch is very well built and works well. Required a step-down to fit Audi hitch and customer service provided outstanding advice and service. Professional. Very, very happy with product, transaction and service.

Works and looks great one year later. Excellent product excellent company.

by:

This is a well made adapter except for one problem I encountered when attaching a Yakima bike rack with 1 1/4" stinger. The front end of the stinger hits the adapter pin, and does not allow the holes to line up in order to insert the bike rack's pin. The stinger simply cannot slide in far enough for the holes to match up. I had to drill a new hole closer to the outer end of the adapter. I have encountered the same problem with other adapters. etrailer, take notice--if you solve this problem, you'll have new customers buying your adapter, which is otherwise well made.

by:

Works like it should with my Thule T2 1.25” bike rack. No problems. Saves me from buying a new $800+ rack. Along with the Anti rattle pin #63232, works like a charm.

by:

Perfect hitch reducer and Anti-Rattle Hitch Lock combination to carry our two bikes around for the last year on our 2020 Rav4 Hybrid! Great value.

Martin F.

Still going strong, no rattle and good combination!

by:

Well made. Exact dimensions. No issues.

by:

I purchased a hitch to mount my hitch mount bike rack. I fully intended to purchase the Class II, 1.25" hitch, but after speaking with the e-trailer rep it made more sense to go with the Class III hitch and use a reducer for the bike rack. It gives me more flexibility with my hitch. Thanks e-trailer guys for asking the right questions and making sure I had the correct product for my needs.

by:

The service from etrailer is exceptional!
I
needed this adapter for our 5th Wheel RV. We have a bike rack and the 2” receiver hitch needed to be 1.25 for the bike rack. The original was adapted with a rubber reducer but it wobbled way to much. So the fix was a adapter sleeve. I was pleased to find on on etrailer. However, the price was high. I bought it anyway and then still had to shim the bike rack and the adapter to make a tight fit. It works however for the 60+ $ I paid it should have fit the receiver better and the bike rack better.

by:

I can't say enough good things about the C.S. Brophy company and how they stand behind their products. I bought one of these adapters from etrailer and used it for months but it didn't fit right. I finally discovered the 5/8" hole on one side was off center. etrailer directed me to call Brophy, and Brophy replaced the item as quickly as could be expected, paid for the return shipping, and followed up to make sure the replacement worked correctly. The replacement is a well made piece of hardware that should last many years. I will look first for Brophy products whenever I'm shopping for trailer hardware.

by:

A bit pricey...but ordering was a breeze and the item was shipped almost immediately. I've had good luck ordering from etrailer, and this time was no exception.

by:

I bought this to use with a Thule T2 Classic, which has a 1" hitch to fit my 2" receiver on our truck. This reducer works very well for this application. The T2 though uses a metric M12 threaded bolt to attach. You will need a longer bolt and lock washers to accommodate the now wider span with the addition of the reducer. There is very little wobble with the T2 attached, but there is some. They make bolts that can be attached to eliminate the wobble.

by:

Bought this hitch reducer for my chevy Traverse to use my 1 1/4" Thule bike rack.
Fits the car fine. The spare tire is immediately behind and inline with the trailer hitch. This does not extend beyond the 2" hitch toward the spare tire. My Thule bike rack now fits nicely into the trailer hitch. I use a regular pin to hold the reducer in the hitch. With the bikes attached the reducer "moves" inside the 2" hitch about a 1/16th of an inch. this translates to a full inch or 2 of movement of the bikes back and forth. The Thule 1 1/4" hitch bar has a threaded bolt to secure it to the Hitch/reducer. In a smaller hitch there is no play and the bouncing of the bikes. with the reducer it now takes some getting used to. I am contemplating a steel shim but I would need to make sure it cannot fall out during travel . . .

by:

I needed a hitch reducer to attach my bike rack to our vehicle for my family's upcoming vacation trip. My bike rack had a 1 1/4" hitch and my vehicle has a 2" receiver.

I quickly found the right hitch reducer on the etrailer.com website and the product was delivered in-time for my trip and worked as expected.

We did plenty of biking.Thank you etrailer.com

  • 2 Inch Trailer Hitch Reducer to Use Bike Rack With 1-1/4 Inch Shank
There is one option for a hitch reducer for a 2 inch hitch that will allow you to use a bike rack with a 1-1/4 inch shank, which is from Brophy: - Hitch Reducer 2" to 1-1/4" Trailer Hitch Receiver # HT02 This will stick out approximately 3 to 4 inches from the Curt hitch that fits your 2021 Acura RDX, the Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver # C95CR. In regards to the 1-1/4" Draw-Tite Trailer Hitch Receiver # 36114, it will fit a 2021 Acura RDX with a spare tire, but if the spare tire has a wheel...

As the 1-1/4" sleeve inside the Brophy Hitch Reducer 2" to 1-1/4" Trailer Hitch Receiver # HT02 is not removeable, it will not work as an expander. However, I do have another option available for you. With the 1-1/4" hitches for the 2016 VW Passat being Class I rated, I suggest going with the Brophy Hitch Adapter 1-1/4" to 2" Trailer Hitch Receiver # HTAD. This will definitely fit your hitch and will allow you to carry your bike rack without issues. However, it should be noted that any...

  • How to Use Rola Convoy with 1-1/4 Shank on 2012 Jeep Liberty with 2 Receiver
There is not a specific adapter for the Rola Convoy 9307 to adapt to a 2" receiver but you can use a hitch reducer sleeve like the Hitch Reducer 2" to 1-1/4" Trailer Hitch Receiver # HT02 to make the 2" hitch on your 2012 Jeep Liberty into a 1-1/4" receiver. I prefer this to an extension type adapter because it uses the existing receiver and does not extend away from the cross tube significantly, so it won't reduce your tongue weight by 50% like the # C45770 would.

  • 2" Hitch Adapter for Thule Hitching Post 945
My solution for this is to approach it from another angle and REDUCE your hitch size, since the sleeve adapters that increase the hitch of this specific model, the Thule Hitching Post 945, are no longer widely available. I recommend the Hitch Reducer 2" to 1-1/4" # HT02 as a workaround for you. I attached a video showing how to install and use the reducer. This works with standard hitch pins bolts or a threaded hitch pins which it looks like you have on your rack.

  • Shortest 2 Trailer Hitch Extender Available
The 7" Hitch Extender # HE06 is going to be our shortest 2" extender available due to the length of shank required to extend our of the receiver for the additional receiver tube. The only way to get a 3" is with a reducer like the Hitch Reducer 2" to 1-1/4" # HT02. Since the smaller shank can fit inside the 2" receiver this is only 3" long from 2" hitch pin hole to 1-1/4" hitch pin hole.
