We were looking for a solution to haul our utv when pulling our camper. This extender allowed us to leave the tailgate down and still have enough clearance to not damage the tailgate. Downside--this extender amplifies the amount of movement with the hitch. This is more than a simple hitch clamp could fix. I added several modifications to completely eliminate the hitch movement. We have taken several trips since the installation and no issues with pulling the trailer. We did have to extend the safety chains about 4 links. Overall a good product and it accomplished the goal. As always, etrailer personnel are knowledgeable, easy to deal with and have quick shipments.

The hitch extender is working well for us. We just finished our second season of camping with no issues.

@JonW We're glad to hear that! Keep in mind that using the reducer/extender will lower the weight capacity of your hitch by 1/3.

by:

My truck has a 2-1/2" receiver. I already owned a heavy duty 2" hitch. This 2" reducer & extender was perfect for my use. I used it to tow a rental trailer and needed to extend my receiver to allow me to tow with the tailgate down. This reducer/extender did the trick. I had plenty of room making tight u-turns.

The quality of the product is very good. I would recommend this product to others.

by:

Reducer/extender was thrown into a box ,no padding. Broke through box during delivery. Luckily my postal carrier put 2 and 2 together and I got it. Pretty disappointing from etrailer.

by:

Lowed me to keep the tail gate down and pull my travel trailer behind without buying a very expensive system

by:

Fast delivery, solid gear. This is not only a 7" extension, but an adapter from 2 1/2" to 2" receiver to use equipment that I already have such as bike carrier and vise insert. Works great! I opted for the heavier version (why not) in case I needed to tow a small trailer. As always, very pleased with etrailer and their support.

by:

I ordered this hitch extender because my new 2024 Vexus VX21 bass boat has a ladder installed on the trailer. If you back up too sharp in one direction you will push step 2 clean through your truck rear bumper on the right side. I have problems with co-angles not listening to me and not focusing when backing my boat into and taking out of a ramp. This Brophy Hitch Extender was the perfect solution and it is exceptionally well constructed. Thank you as this now gives me piece of mind that my bumper will not be destroyed.

by:

Works great when used with anti rattle hitch locks for my carry on hitch basket and my Saris bike rack. Would definitely recommend. Allows me to drop my tailgate with the bikes on the tack.

by:

I purchased this to use on my 2500HD to transition from the factory 2.5" receiver to a 2" so that we could use a Yakima hitch mounted bike rack. With the length of the tube, it also provides the perfect amount of clearance from the back of the truck so that I can lower the tailgate without it hitting the upright on the bike rack. Great product and always pleased with etrailer's customer service!

by:

Great product. Exactly what I needed. Hard to find anywhere else. Have used it a lot for a year now and it has worked perfectly.

by:

Bought this to extend my bike rack away from the truck camper door. Added a anti rattle clamp and yhe setup has been perfect.

by:

Works as it should and I didn't have to turn my power jack on my camper 90 degrees to miss the tailgate when it is lowered!!

by:

This heavy duty extension is going to work perfect for towing my boat behind my truck and camper. This is just what I needed. The quality is superb. I found a similar product on Amazon but the reviews were poor and the quality looked inferior to the e-trailer product.

by:

got this to accommodate the Tule bike rack in my 1 ton truck. I haven't used it yet but looks shiny.

by:

Product is very high quality. There was a small shipping delay, but etrailer was excellent at keeping me informed of the delay and when to expect product. I am very satisfied with the purchase.

Worked as advertised. Did a great job over the last year.

by:

Working with etrailer.com was great. I worked with Madison and she was knowledgable, professional and very helpful. Got what I needed and it was delivered earlier than expected! I highly recommend etrailer.com!

by:

Quality extension, keeps tailgate from hitting trailers jack stand.

by:

Not really much to talk about. I needed it so that I was able to open my tailgate with my trailer attached. I pull a 7,000 pound trailer. It does exactly what I need it to do.

by:

This product works well as expected. The shipping service I recieved however, was not good. I was promised delivery prior to the time I needed it, but it came too late and I had to purchase another one locally, with a lot of running around to find something in time.

by:

We can now haul our golf cart with the tailgate (on our Chevy HD 2500 6'-6" bed) down and still pull our Apex 24' travel trailer. Before we would need to remove the tailgate. Our truck hitch is a class 5 rated at 13,500 lbs. and our trailer fully loaded is 5964 lbs. We only needed to extend our 7- pin cord ,the breakaway brake cable and safety chains.

Great!Great!

by:

2.5" hitches are great, except that every single accessory aside from your heavy duty hitch doesn't fit.

I had a shockingly difficult time finding an adapter that wasn't total garbage. I tried several. This was key to my problem, and it gave me a little bit of extra room too!

by:

Works well with the compressor.

by:

All I received was an empty box with a hole in the side. Customer service was very helpful and promised to send a replacement.

by:

Exactly what I needed

  • Recommended Hitch Step To Get In Truck Bed Camper Installed In 20118 Ram 2500 Short Bed
That will really depend on how long you are needing the step to be. All of the hitch steps we offer are designed for 2" receivers, so to be able to use one of these with the 2-1/2" receiver on your 2018 Ram 2500 I first recommend the Brophy Hitch Reducer and Extender # HR26 which will give you an extra 7" of extension. This extension has a max tongue weight capacity of 500lbs or reduces the capacities of your hitch by 1/3rd, which ever is lower but since your truck is a 2500 you should...

  • Adapter To Use Thule T2 Pro XTR Bike Rack in 2-1/2 Inch Hitch Receiver
So the answer is yes, with your 2-1/2 inch receiver you will still be able to use the Thule T2 Pro XTR Bike Rack # TH83JV. You are correct, however, that the your standard hitch reducer sleeve isn't going to work, so what you will need instead is a different reducer from Brophy: - Brophy Hitch Reducer and Extender - 2-1/2" to 2" Trailer Hitch # HR26 Because it extends out, what this Brophy adapter does is essentially give you a 2" hitch on your F-250 so you can mount the T2 Pro # TH83JV....

It looks like you are using a sleeve adapter like the Curt Hitch Receiver Reducer Sleeve - 2-1/2" to 2" # C45405 In order to lock the Thule T2 Pro XTR Bike Rack # TH83JV, I recommend using an extended hitch adapter like Brophy Hitch Reducer and Extender - 2-1/2" to 2" Trailer Hitch - 7" Long # HR26. This will serve the general purpose of converting your 2-1/2" receiver to 2", but will also extend the receiver enough to give the bike rack full access to the hitch pin hole for the auto pin...

  • Inno Tire Hold 2 Bike Platform Rack Used with 2.5" Hitch Receivers
Yes Inno Tire Hold 2 Bike Platform Rack Part # INH120 will work with the following parts. A Reducer is needed to work with the rack, you may need an anti rattle device for the reducer to the hitch that is 2.5" as well. This will minimize any movement that may occur when using the added Reducer. I suggest using the Brophy Hitch Reducer and Extender - 2-1/2" to 2" Trailer Hitch - 7" Long Part # HR26, with the XL Anti-Rattle Trailer Hitch Receiver Lock for 2-1/2" Hitches - 3-1/2" Span Part...

  • 12 inch Long Hitch Tube Recommendation that has a 2 inch Opening
The Brophy Hitch Reducer # HR26 has a tongue weight capacity of 500 lbs. I have a better solution for you since this was not designed for welding to a bumper. For a product that is very similar that is designed to be welded and used as a hitch opening check out the Combo Bar 12" with 2" Trailer Hitch Receiver # E-11. This is also 12 inches long. Check out the review video I attached as well. When installed on your bumper it will have the same capacity as the bumper as long as it is welded...

  • Hitch Extender to Tow a Trailer with a 2005 GMC Sierra 2500 with Truck Bed Camper
First you will need to determine if the trailer hitch on your 2005 GMC Sierra 2500 is a 2 inch or 2-1/2 inch. Just measure the opening width to determine the size. I am assuming that the tailgate is down and/or the camper overhangs the back of the truck thus the need for an extension. I recommend an extension that is long enough to where the face of the receiver is flush with or a few inches recessed under the rear most part of the truck or camper, whichever extends out the furthest. Note that this adapter that also extends will reduce your capacity by a third. • Can you Use the Brophy Hitch Extender to Tow a Travel Trailer
It looks like the Brophy Hitch Reducer and Extender, part # HR26, could work for your application based on the numbers. However, this isn't something I recommend for you since the addition of an extender not only reduces your towing capacity, it also adds more sway than you want with a 30-ft. trailer. • Does Using A Hitch Extender Reduce the Capacity of a Trailer Hitch
Yes, anytime you use a hitch extender or reducer like # HR26 you will lose about 1/3 of your hitches overall capacity. However, since you'll be towing a trailer that weighs between 4,500 to 5,000 lbs, the Brophy Hitch Reducer # HR26 will still work fine because it has a 5,000 lb max capacity. In all honesty, even with the 1/3 capacity reduction on a class V hitch you'd still be in good shape for what you're wanting to do.

Your truck would be fine without using the weight distribution system, but the # HR26 would not as it needs the WD system when the tongue weight is over 500 lbs. For that route, I recommend either the Curt Hitch Reducer # C45405 or the Brophy Reducer with 7" Long Extender # HR26 (depending on your length needs).
