Bias Tires vs. Radial Tires

Bias vs. radial tire graphic

Bias ply tires are designed for off-road or agricultural applications. They are built with thick, durable nylon cords that are positioned at a 30- to 45-degree angle to the direction of travel. The layers alternate in a crisscross pattern, making the sidewalls stiffer so that the entire tire is able to flex easily. As a result, the tire provides a smooth ride and improved handling when trailering on uneven surfaces.

Determining the Bolt Pattern

The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.

Bolt Pattern - Odd

To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: "5 on 4-1/2" means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)

Bolt Pattern - Even

On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: "8 on 6-1/2" means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)

Bolt Pattern - Side

Measuring the distance from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

  • If D = 2-5/8", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2"
  • If D = 2-3/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4"
  • If D = 3", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5"
  • If D = 3-1/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2"

One year later and Im still very happy with my purchase. I highly recommend etrailer.

by:

This is the perfect replacement for my boat trailer tires. I was very pleased with the customer service help with my order.

by:

The 13” Loadstar galvanized wheels and tires fit my 2004 Fisher Prohawk trailer perfect. I’m very happy with my purchase.

by:

I recieved two of these tires yesterday. Grrat looking tires and wheels. I have a reatively new galvanized spare on the trailer but these new wheels have a much better shine to them. They were delivered very fast

by:

etrailer popped up on my searcj for a 13 inch load range D tire and also a galvanized wheel. The wheel tire combo was a great deal and free shipping. i received it in about three days and it was exactly what I was looking for. i haven;t tried it out yet but have no reason to doubt it will meet my needs.

Still going strong.

by:

Tires and rims arrived a couple days earlier than expected. I am very happy with the products and pleased with the appearance of the galvanized rims.
I also made a separate order on plastic fenders of which I'm very happy with.

Both orders were packaged well and had no damage upon arrival.

by:

Another great purchase from etrailer. Great delivery, value and product.

by:

My wheels and tires were delivered way earlier that I could have expected it was like overnight. They were all packaged in individual boxes, nicely done!

by:

They are holding up very well! High quality product!

by:

Ordered the tires on a Sunday night and even with regular shipping they were at my house Tuesday. I bought them to replace a pair of trailer tires purchased locally- nearly identical price, but both the tires and the wheels are of MUCH higher quality materials. I was emailed the next day to make sure the order had arrived and that I was satisfied with everything. Customer service has been great- will definitely use etrailer again!

by:

Exactly what I wanted. 2 new tires and rims for my 2014 Yamaha SX190 boat trailer. Had the tires balanced at the local tire shop we use for our cars real cheap ??. One was "typical" out of balance the other was more so. I won't complain. They are now balanced. I'm using the old ones as spares since this trailer doesn't have spares. Good to know my F150 jack and wrench work perfectly on the trailer so no extras needed. I will definitely use etrailer again if the need arises. They are great.

by:

Perfect fit for new boat tires an rims thank you for your service my husband was over joyed !

by:

The appearance (finish) of the rim is bad rough!
If it wasn’t for being a spare I would have sent it back !
I won’t be shopping etrailer again.

by:

Great price, quality tire and rim with fast shipping from etrailer. After internet search at many sites, etrailer offered the best price and tire I needed as a spare for my boat trailer. Also received a very nice sturdy Fulton tire mount. Received order extremely fast within 2 days. Very pleased and would definitely order again.

by:

Nice looking tire, fits my trailer perf ectly.

by:

I have to say the customer service and inventory selection is great. But with my last order of this trailer wheel and tire the finish on this wheel is less than to be desired . It looks like what ever process went into galvanizing the rim the Quality control was lacking . Other than that I have no issues with etrailer and for sure will order more in the future when need be

by:

Wheels are holding up well after numerous trips. Good option for any trailer.

Kurt

The wheels have gone on many trips and are holding up. Been on 4 plus hour trips with no problems.

by:

Happy with my purchase and the shipping was very fast.

by:

It's been a year since these tires and rims have been installed. They've held up great with just under 7k miles. Thank you etrailer!

by:

The tires/arrived on time and looked great. I was a little disappointed to discover the max weight capability of the wheel was slightly less than Load Range D which was the main reason I bought the tires to replace the Load Range C tires/wheels on my boat trailer. Minor issue though, thanks for your help!

by:

It's a tire, is round, holds air, really spendy but they had it, and it works as a spare tire just fine.

by:

Arrived in a timely manner. Looks like good quality materials. Thank you!

by:

Very pleased with the wheel and tire combination. I ordered 2 of each and they arrived a day early packaged in a shipping box together.

Definitely a smart idea to check for compatibility, and I can confirm for you that the Timbren Axle-Less system and Castle Rock tire and wheel you asked about will absolutely work together. The parts are the following: - Timbren Axle-Less Trailer Suspension System with Hubs # A20RS545 - Loadstar ST185/80D13 Bias Trailer Tire with 13" Galvanized Wheel # AM3S334 The Timbren system uses hubs that have a 5 on 4-1/2" bolt pattern, and are compatible with wheels up to 13", which is the same...

  • Difference Between ST185/80R13 and ST185/80D13 For Picking Out Spare
The difference between the letter R and D in the tire size you mentioned has to do with the construction of the tire. R stands for radial and D stands for Bias Ply. The main difference between a radial ply and a bias ply tire is how the tire is constructed. The cords inside a bias ply tire run at a 32 degree angle to the direction of travel, and the cords on a radial tire run at a 90 degree angle to the direction of travel, or across the tire from wheel lip to wheel lip. • Are Wheel/Tire Assemblies Pre-Balanced
Most wheel wheel/tire assemblies come pre-balanced to an extent that is suitable for use on non-steer axles. This is done by matching the light spot on the tire (yellow dot) with the heavy spot on the wheel (valve stem). However, if you would like for the assmelby to be balanced down to the 1/4 oz then you would need to take it to a wheel/tire shop but this is not really needed for trailers.

  • Why Do Bias Ply and Radial Trailer Tires of the Same Size have Different Measurements
It is not recommended to tow a trailer that has two different tire types on it. It will affect the handling and ride of the trailer since radial tires track better. This is do to differences in manufacturing processes, tread type and wear, and amount of air pressure in the tires. Trailer tires should always be inflated to the maximum psi indicated on the tire. I do not know the size you need but some examples of stainless steel lug nuts include # AM90070 or # KALN1375S for 1/2"-20 threads (very common).
