Center Hole of U-Bolt Plate Isn't Large Enough Troubleshooting

Question:

My 1 1/2inch square axle will sit on top of my leaf springs, so the U-bolt plate will be on the bottom side of the leaf springs. There is a center hole on the U-bolt plate that should accept the protruding nut/bolt assembly that holds the leafs together as the U-bolts are tightened to the U-bolt plate. The center hole in the U-bolt plate is not quite large enough for the nut/bolt assembly and therefore, the U-bolt plate will not be flush to the leaf spring assembly. There is a chance then when I tighten the U-bolt nuts it will force the U-bolt plate flush to the leaf spring, but should I drill out the center hole in the U-bolt plate so that it easily fits over the nut, allowing the plate to be flush with the leaf spring? Thanks,

Helpful Expert Reply:

If the center hole of your U-bolt plate isn't large enough for the nut on your leaf spring to fit flush you would want to drill it out large enough so that it will fit properly.
