2014 Ram 2500 Hitch Prep Short Bed Truck Fifth Wheel Hitch and Sidewinder Recommendation

Question:

I was ready to purchase the BWRVK3600 hitch when someone told me I needed a slider with a short bed. I then read on the product page I could get a sidewinder instead of a slider. I then read on the sidewinder FAQ page not to use with the BandW Companion. I dont own a trailer yet, but I want to be ready with my hitch when I fond one. Please help. I really like the BWRVK3600 and would like to find a way to make it work. Here is the information I found on your site. http://www.etrailer.com/question-70632.html There is currently one option for a 5th wheel trailer hitch that will fit directly into the factory prep package on the 2014 Rams. It is B and W hitch # BWRVK3600. However, it is not a slider hitch. But if you need additional cab clearance you can use a Sidewinder with this hitch. https://www.etrailer.com/faq-sidewinder.aspx o Note:It is not recommended to use a Sidewinder with the Curt Q5 or BandW Companion 1.? Curt Q5 - because of the extra movement from the cushioning in the Curt Q5 fifth wheel hitch, the Sidewinder will not function properly 2.? BandW Companion - the fifth wheel that mounts in the gooseneck hole - the hitch itself will rotate when using the Sidewinder creating 2 pivot points and therefore a loss of trailer control. To fix you can add 2 1/2, grade 5 bolts to the rear support to keep the hitch from rotating, but this may void the BandW warranty.

This is a great question that we just recently got to the bottom of. The B and W companion hitches that normally install in a gooseneck hitch unlike the part # BWRVK3600 are not to be used with Sidewinders as there is only one attachment point. The # BWRVK3600 uses 4 attachment points as it is designed to fit the Ram under-bed hitch prep package so it will work with Sidewinders without the use of additional hardware that could void the warranty.

Sidewinders are pin box specific so you will first need to know what pin box you have know in order to pick out the correct one.

There should be a sticker or a stamping on the OEM pin box of the trailer that will list the pin box number that is on the trailer.

Once you figure out which pin box you have you can check the FAQ I attached that has a chart that shows the correct Sidewinder to get based on which pin box you have.
