What is the Weight Rating of the Curt Pin and Clip # C21510

Question:

If this pin and clip fit Class III, IV, and V hitches, does that mean the pin is rated at the Class V weight capacity? Do pins have weight ratings? Is it safe to tow a horse trailer with a GVWR of 7,000 lbs. on a Class IV hitch?

Expert Reply:

Hitch pins are not given weight ratings because they are built with such extreme weight bearing capabilities that the trailer hitch, ball mount or trailer coupler is more likely to fail than the hitch pin.

Most Class IV trailer hitches have a maximum towing capacity of 12,000 lbs and a tongue weight capacity of 1,000 lbs. Before you tow your horse trailer, you will also want to verify the towing capacity of your tow vehicle. There are instances where a Class IV hitch is available for a particular vehicle, but the vehicle itself does not have a high enough towing capacity to match the trailer hitch.

If you verify that the tow vehicle and trailer hitch have a towing capacity greater than the GVWR of the trailer, then you will have no problem towing your horse trailer. You can also use the Curt Pin and Clip, # C21510, if you want to.
