How do I know if I need a 6000lbs actuator or bigger?

An actuator weight capacity should be used to match the weight capacity of the trailer it is going to be used on, and the type tongue it is to be attached to. I have attached a helpful article that explains trailer couplers and how they are typically sized.

The Dexter Zinc-Plated, Leverlock Brake Actuator w/ Lockout Shield, part # 099-175-20, you referenced is used for a straight tongue trailer up to 7,500 lb capacity. It doesn't matter which wire is used for the power circuit and which is ground. Either wire will do fine. Run one of the wires to your reverse light circuit and then ground the other circuit and you will be good.
