Will I need to Hard Wire a Brake Controller for my 2006 Ford Explorer
Question:
I own a 2006 Ford Exporer, 4.0L 4x4. I came with a 1.5 inch light duty hitch and a flat four trailer connector. I would like to use a trailer with electric brakes. Are there after market plug in harnesses for this application or do I need to splice in the connectors?

You will need to hard wire or splice in the brake controller. We have a kit called an # ETBC7 that contains all the wiring you will need to take your 4-flat connector to a 4-flat and 7-pole combination connector and wire the brake controller. I have included a video that shows step-by-step how to do this.
Since you have a light duty hitch, I would also suggest making sure your hitch can handle the trailer you intend to tow. You may need to upgrade to a Class III hitch with a 2-inch hitch opening and higher capacity. You will need to know the loaded weight of your trailer to make this determination. I included a link to the hitches available for your 2006 Ford Explorer, a link to our selection of brake controllers, and a couple of FAQs on installing brake controllers.
