Fogatti Tankless RV Water Heater Freeze Protection

I have a fogatti insta shower 6. It does not get real cold here but does get in the 20s. This unit has freeze protection. Does the controller have to be on for this feature to work? I usually use the hot water to shower and wash dishes then I just go to the controller and turn it off. Whats the proper way to use it for the freeze protection?

The controller does have to be on; the Fogatti Tankless RV Water Heater # LSB44FR senses when the water lines coming into the heater have dropped to 35 degrees Fahrenheit and begins cycling warm/hot water through the lines to keep them from freezing. Once the lines reach 90 degrees, the system will shut down to preserve energy.
