i am having trouble releasing the clips that hold the 7 wire to the factory trailer connector

I have included a link to a video that should help you. The wiring harness is connected to the trailer connector on your 2013 GMC Sierra with a white or gray lock. The easiest way to remove it is to use a very small flathead screwdriver and push/pry the lock out of position so you can then pull it out.

Then there is likely to be a spot on the connector housing that you will need to push in while pulling out the harness at the same time.
