The SportRack Cargo Carrier for 2" Hitches # SR9851 has a shipping weight of 67-lbs. This figure includes the packaging so the actual net weight of the cargo carrier itself is approximately 63-lbs.

The 2-inch Class III hitch receivers we offer for your 2014 Jeep Compass, which can be seen on the link provided, have varying tongue weight capacities. For example, the Curt hitch # C13081 has a 400-lb tongue weight capacity while the Draw-Tite # 75712 is rated for 525-lbs.

When using a hitch-mount cargo carrier such as the etrailer # e98874 you will need to account for the weight of the carrier itself as well as the loaded cargo. For instance, if you are using the Curt hitch # C13081 after you account for the 48-lb weight of the carrier you are left with a cargo weight capacity of 338-lbs based on the rating for the hitch (400-lbs - 48-lbs = 352-lbs). If you have the Draw-Tite hitch # 75712 rated at 525-lbs capacity, then your maximum loaded cargo weight would be 463-lbs (525 - 48 = 477). The safety/warning sticker on your hitch will indicate its tongue weight capacity.

Please note that even though the carrier itself is rated for 500-lbs you can only load it with cargo weight up to the limit of the hitch into which it is installed, and again, after accounting for the weight of the carrier itself. For reference I have linked a video for this etrailer carrier.

We recommend that a stabilizing strap be used with all cargo carriers to help support the hitch and reduce motion of the carrier. Curt actually requires this in order to retain warranty coverage on their hitch. We offer # 18050 from Curt for this purpose and we suggest this strap or an equivalent be used with any carrier/hitch combination.

I have included a link to a helpful article concerning cargo carriers that might be of interest to you.
