Is it Advisable to Mix Different Types of Wheel Bearing Grease in Trailer Bearing

Question:

I have a foldable trailer and I was thinking about adding some grease to the bearings but I dont know what type/brand of grease was applied initially. Can I add the redinch grease or is it incompatible?

Certain types of grease are compatible with each other but since you do not know what type is in your trailer now we recommend that you remove the existing grease from your trailer wheel bearings before refilling them. Even if you know what type of grease is currently in the bearings there is some chance that the old grease may be contaminated from moisture. Cleaning out all the existing grease and replacing all of it with fresh is the way to go.

I have linked an article that may be helpful to you in selecting grease for your wheel bearings. The type of trailer and its typical usage can have a bearing (so sorry) on the choice of grease.

You may also want to consider a bearing packer, such as # L70025 from Plews, if you will be using a grease gun for zerk fittings. This can make thorough application of grease in your roller bearings a little easier and less messy. A video for this item is linked for your review.

We offer bearing grease for boat trailers, part # L54FR which is 3 - 3 inch cartridges and a compatible grease gun like the # 30-800.

The LMX red grease # L11390 you referenced is a good choice for extremes of temperature or for cases where there is high wear in the bearings/hubs.
