How to Tell if Thule Hullavator Kayak Carrier Will Fit on a Tesla Model 3

Question:

I have older Thule hullavator bought in 2014. I am thinking of mounting it onto a Tesla Model 3 with OEM flat cross bars. Will that year of hullavator be compatible clearing the door panels when extended with the Tesla Model 3? Rear mounting kayaks onto a Tesla due to potentially cracking the glass roof is NOT recommended. Thus side mounting kayaks seem to be the safest solution for protecting the glass roof. Do you agree?

Both the current Hullavator Pro # TH898 and the older model, part 897XT that you have, require the crossbars to overhang the feet of the roof rack by 4" - 8" for their to be enough clearance to lower the carrier without making contact with any given vehicle. If you're Tesla Model 3 crossbars have a T-Slot, you still have the T-Slot mounting hardware, and the crossbars can achieve an overhang then you'll be good to go. The nice thing is that you already have this discontinued carrier so you'll be able to test for clearance directly on your end, taking any guesswork out of fitment.

If your crossbars don't have overhang (or enough overhang) then you'll need the following parts from Yakima which fit a 2017 - 2023 Tesla Model 3:

- 60" JetStream Crossbars # Y00426
- BaseLine Towers # Y28TR
- BaseClip Fit Kit # Y06173
- Lock Core Kit # Y07204

The 60" crossbars will give you enough overhang so you can use the Thule Hullavator. Just keep in mind you may need to offset the crossbars to get enough overhang.
