I do carry a class 3 hitch for the 2008 Ford Explorer. I recommend the Curt hitch # 13112. This hitch only fits models with factory installed 1-1/4" receiver, which it sounds like you do have. The hitch itself is rated for up to 5,000 lbs. Curt hitches are made in the UAS and use a high-quality gloss black powder coating.
I did take a look at the online owners guide for a 2008 Explorer. It looks like the towing capacity of this vehicle can vary depending on a few different factors. I would encourage you to read over the towing section of your owners manual. They have some really useful info in there. It also may be worthwhile to try contacting a Ford dealership with your VIN. They should be able to give you more information pertaining to your vehicle specifically and how much you can actually tow.
I have included a link to an installation video for the Curt # 13112 for you to take a look at.
