How to Install a Redarc Brake Controller in a 2020 Kia Sorento
Question:
Hi, I bought last years a Redarc brake controller for my Sorento 2011. Few month ago, I replace my suv with a newer version, 2020 Sorento EXV6. Can I use the same brake controller? Which harness I need to buy for a 7 way RV plug? Thanks

Yes, you can definitely use the Redarc Brake Controller item # RED24FR in your new Sorento. It looks like the 2020 Sorentos did not come with a plug for a brake controller. You will need the Universal Wiring Harness for Redarc Tow-Pro Trailer Brake Controllers item # RED69FR to complete your installation.
I have linked an installation video below to help you get the Redarc set up.
If your Sorento has the tow package you can use the Tekonsha OEM Replacement Vehicle Wiring Harness w Brake Controller Adapter item # TK24FR to install a 7-way connector. This harness will not work if you do not have the towing package because the connectors are completely different. An added bonus if you have the towing package and you use this kit, is that the Redarc Tow-Pro Wiring Adapter for Tekonsha Brake Controller Harness item # 331-TPH-017 will give you a plug an play installation with your item # RED24FR. You wouldn't need item # RED69FR in this set up.
If you do not have the towing package you will need to use two harnesses to add a 7-way. The first is the Curt T-Connector Vehicle Wiring Harness item # C56256. This harness is custom fit and plugs in behind your rear tail lights. It will provide you with a 4-way connector.
The second harness you will need is the Universal Installation Kit for Trailer Brake Controller item # ETBC7. The kit includes a pre-wired 7- and 4-way trailer connector that mounts easily at the rear of your vehicle with an included bracket. This kit is designed for use on a vehicle with an existing 4-way flat trailer connector and plugs directly into it.
You will then connect the blue wire to the blue wire on the brake controller, connect the black wire to the positive post on the vehicle's battery, the white wire to ground, and the yellow wire to vehicle's reverse circuit if applicable. This will provide you with the ability to control your trailer's brakes and also provide you with a 12v power wire for you trailer's accessory lights.
I have linked installation videos for both of these wiring harnesses below. If your Sorento already has a 4-way connector disregard the Curt I recommended you won't need it.
I recommend using the No-Drill Mount Bracket item # 18136 to secure the 7-way connector to your hitch without having to drill. This will put it in an easy to reach spot and prevent the risk of it falling onto the road.
