Replacement Hub/Drum and Brakes Needed for Dexter 3,500 lb Torsion Axles on 1994 Jayco Popup Camper

Question:

I bought a trailer frame which used to be I believe a 94 Jayco 17 ft. Popup camper. It has two Dexter 3500lb torsion axles. They run 205/60-10 4 lug load C tires and hydraulic surge brakes. The hydraulic reservoir Atwood and master cylinder is rusted and dry. I am looking to see what my options are for getting this trailer buildable and usable. Can I put a new hydraulic surge brake actuator on it or upgrade to all electric? Wouldnt mind upgrading to load E either. The axles are straight style should accommodate a new 5x4.5 hub for the load E. Just seeing my options. I did see that your 5 lug hub and drums are only rated for 2000lb axles and not 3500. Has the standard changed since this trailer was built?

The early 90's is about when axle weight ratings and the parts that go with them started to become a bit more standardized so I'm not surprised that your Dexter 3,500 lb axles are using 10" wheels that fit with the 2,000 lb axle parts. For your application I recommend replacing everything and going with with electric brakes since they are easier to maintain and are more cost-effective. This will require you to add a brake controller and breakaway battery setup to your camper but you also won't need to deal with brake lines or an actuator anymore which is the tradeoff.

Here are the parts you'll be needing:

- Electric Trailer Brake Kit # AKEBRK-2
- Easy Grease Trailer Hub and Drum Assembly for 2K Axles # AKHD-545-2-EZ-1K
- Kenda 205/65-10 Bias Trailer Tire with 10" White Wheel - 5 on 4-1/2 - Load Range E # AM3H480
- 10 Gauge Wire # 10-1-1 (sold by the foot)
- Deka Heat Shrink Butt Connector Kit # DW05745-10
- Breakaway Battery Kit # 20400
- Replacement Coupler (see attached link if needed)
- Brake Controller for Tow Vehicle (need to know vehicle year/make/model to recommend)
