Can One Power Wire be Run for Both 4-Way and 7-Way Adapter on 2020 Dodge Grand Caravan

Question:

Hello, I am looking to install a trailer brake controller and a trailer tow lighting kit on my 2020 Dodge Caravan. The only question I have is can the trailer tow lighting power pack get its power from the same power wire as the one running to the 7Way connector or will that be too much Strain on the 40 amp breaker and wire? Just trying to save running two power wires from the battery to the back of the vechicle.

In order to install a seven way trailer connector and trailer brake controller on a 2020 Dodge Grand Caravan you'll first need to start with a four way trailer connector, I recommend the Curt T-Connector Vehicle Wiring Harness part # C56331 which is plug and play. This can then be converted into a seven way using the 4 to 7-Way with 4-Way Adapter and Installation Kit for Trailer Brake Controller part # ETBC7L. The adapter has everything you need to install a wireless trailer brake controller, I recommend the Curt Echo Wireless Trailer Brake Controller part # C51180 because it does not require splicing into the vehicle.

In regards to installation of the four way and seven way adapter, these each require a separate power wire but it's not much more work to run two than it would be for just one. The reason for this is that each power wire is rated for a single task, supplying power to the trailer lighting module and supplying power to the trailer battery or brake controller (if wireless). A single wire would not be sufficient for both these tasks and they don't require the same circuit protection so you could risk frying the lesser rated circuit or not provided enough power to the higher rated one.

If you don't already have a trailer hitch picked out, I recommend the etrailer Trailer Hitch Receiver part # e98854 which would complete your towing setup.
