Troubleshooting Tekonsha Primus IQ Not Showing Trailer Connected But Has Voltage at 7-Way
Question:
Hi, I have a 2000 Ford F350 with Primus IQ but the trailer brakes are not working. The controller does not show c when the trailer is plugged in. I get a red dot only on the display when manually operated, connected or not connected to the trailer. However, when I manually operate the controller I have voltage coming out on the blue wire, and at the truck plug at the rear. All trailer lights through the plug are working. The ground at plug also seems to be good when I use it to test. Couple odd things when I do these tests from the blue wire coming out of the controller: - Testing using a using voltage probe off the controller blue wire, using a truck chassis ground, the controller shows c and also shows voltage numbers on the display when manually operated. When I do this with a volt meter, I do get voltage from the controller, but the controller does not show connected. I have read many other posts and done the testing you have suggested, they have been incredibly helpful. I am thinking it may be the controller not operating correctly but wanted to check if any other ideas to test. thanks

It does sound like your Tekonsha Primus IQ Trailer Brake Controller # TK90160 is working properly. Often times it is difficult to properly bench test this unit as it uses a proportinal sensor to determine how much power to send to the trailer. When using the voltage prove it typically has a higher draw than a multimeter which explains why it is showing the c on the display at that time.
I recommend testing the trailer if possible on another truck or connecting your 2000 Ford F-350 to another trailer with brakes confirmed to work. It sounds like you may have a connection issue on the trailer brake wire. This occasionally occurs as the brake wire is typically exposed beneath the trailer.
