Recommended Hitch With Adapter For 2014 Mazda CX9 With 1.25 Thule T2 Bike Rack
Question:
I spoke with an etrailer.com gentleman on the phone and he couldnt give me a definitive answer to my question: I have a 2014 Mazda CX9. I want to use my existing bike rack which is a Thule T2 with a 1 1/4inch fitting. Will this work with the Curt hitch C12112? My concern is if there will be enough clearance to fold up the rack, or is it going to hit the bumper? Thanks!

I spoke with my contact at Curt and they told me that the distance from the center of the hitch pin hole on the Curt Trailer Hitch part # C12112, to the outer edge of the bumper on your 2014 Mazda CX-9 is 3-1/2 inches.
I checked the dimensions on the Thule T2 Platform-Style 2 Bike Carrier, part # TH9045, and found that the distance from the center of the hitch pin hole to the closest edge of the bike rack when folded up is 3-1/2 inches. That would put the bike carrier so close to the back of your bumper that any movement at all may cause an issue. When it is folded down, the distance is 18 inches.
For your 2014 Mazda CX-9, I recommend the Curt Trailer Hitch, part # 13575. The Curt hitch has a 2 by 2 inch receiver opening. You will also need an adapter like the the Brophy Hitch Reducer, part # HT02 to work with your Thule T2 bike carrier. This adapter will give you an additional 3 inches of clearance, so you will have approximately 6-1/2 inches of clearance from the back bumper of your CX-9 if you decide to go this route.
I have attached a help article that shows how to take the measurements needed to determine if there is enough clearance for your bike rack to clear the bumper of your vehicle.
You will need a straight edge like a dowel or a yardstick and a tape measure. You would place the straight edge against the back of the rear bumper making sure it extends below the hitch pin hole of the trailer hitch. Then measure the distance from the center of the hitch pin hole to the straight edge. This would give you the clearance distance on your CX-9. If it is more than 3-1/2 inches, you should have no problem using your T2 bike carrier in your hitch.
